Pl4yboy 01-14-2008, 12:31 PM What are your plans for the bed? Anything special? Shaving the markers? Keeping the stock tail lights? Roll pan or bumper? I always thought that on the steppers, the lights in a roll pan looked better. Looking great so far! Keep us updated.
XTRMRCR 01-18-2008, 01:33 AM Sorry if I missed it, but what size wheels and tires are you running and what is the back spacing. The truck looks great.
panhandler62 01-18-2008, 02:08 AM I think your rear discs might drag a bit with a standard disc/drum proportioning valve.
whatnow123 01-18-2008, 05:57 AM I think your rear discs might drag a bit with a standard disc/drum proportioning valve.
Yep, I have heard of that happening, I'll find out for sure in a couple of weeks. Currently it "releases" and rolls just fine, but it's not real world stuff as I have driven it a total of 1.2 miles (well thats what to odometer says anyway.
Sorry if I missed it, but what size wheels and tires are you running and what is the back spacing. The truck looks great.
The rears are 17x10, 4.5 BS with 285x60x17 tires and the narrow 12 bolt rear. The fronts are 17x8 with 4.5 bs and 275x50s17.

Yep, shaving the markers, keeping the tail lights and adding a roll pan. I don't think I have the skill set or like a set of lights enough to install them into the roll pan.. currently anyway.
Trey` 01-20-2008, 10:07 AM Truck looks great , nice wheel choice, what did you do with the smoothies that came on it?
heavy71chevy 01-20-2008, 05:13 PM very nice start...gotta love those dessert trucks
whatnow123 02-14-2008, 10:15 AM Just an update. Finally got all the bodywork done on the bed and shot the paint. I can't believe it's finally going together. I'm happy that there is very little sanding in my future as I'm tired of rubbing on this thing. I have new cowl hood and new tailgate, hopefully they will need very little as far as bodywork goes. I now know exactly how decieving "just needs paint" is when you see an add for a car. This has got to be the most time consuming and unrewarding aspect of "restoring" a vehical, but worth it in the end.
Here's the pics....

Unrewarding?! But your truck looks awesome with its new paint, come on, that's totally rewarding! It will also be very cool when someone asks you who painted your truck and you get to say "I did" :metal: .

nice work man!
chrislehr 02-16-2008, 05:10 AM Great looking truck - how did you "reinforce" the seat mounts? Im REALLY liking those!
whatnow123 03-03-2008, 05:34 AM Hey Everyone!
Just an update, I finally tore into the motor to install the edelbrock aluminum heads (2.02 valves, 64cc chambers) I bought off board member boraxman. Never spoke to the guy, seems really cool and shipped them when he said he would. I've been sitting on them for a few months as I wasn't ready to install them yet. Anyway, when I was pulling off the old heads (I was freaking out a little bit doing this as I bought the truck unrunning and full of grime) and I as suspected the short block as been rebuilt which was a huge relief. I figured it was with the compression being dead on for each cylinder, great oil pressure and ran very strong. It's a .60 over 350 4 bolt main with flat top pistons. The cylinder walls were perfect with zero ridge and all the hone still clearly visible, so the good news is it's very low mileage, the bad is that it's .60 over and on it's last rebuild.
Anyway, pulled it down to a short block, it cleaned up great and the paint was still good from the rebuild. Not sure why anyone would install leaky valve covers on a new block as it was covered in oil grime. Installed the heads, put a new damper in there (the old one was wobbling really bad and the rubber was coming out so I was afraid to drive it far if it let loose). Installed a Lunatii Voodoo cam, roller rockers, ceramic coated headers (which I discolored on start up do the the timing being off duh!) and the stainless magnaflow X kit (buy the way, the tail pipes won't fit on the passenger side if you have a super track bar). After I broke in the cam and got it timed right, all I can say is Wholly Sh-t! It was quick before with the 1.94 76cc heads and whatever cam it had, but now there is no comparison. I know that some have said that the shift from first to second is fairly wide for a 700r, but it rips the tires through second as well and is completely squirly. I was almost out of gas so I filled the tank thinking that the extra weight over the rear would help it hook up, all that did was make the black marks on the street darker. I still have the wood and tailgate to install, so maybe that will help.
I also installed the one piece window kit (with triangles). Great kit! The windows don't rattle at all and are smooth as silk rolling up and down. I highly recommend!
Wasn't sure about what to do for mirrors, I bought some 3rd gen camaro mirrors that I was going to install, but wasn't sure I could fabricate the mounting surface to match the door and not have the mirror to far down. When I was at the auto parts store, I found some $25 "sport mirrors" and thought I could make those work. Did a couple of test fits, shot some paint and low and behold, I they look pretty cool. are completely functional and cover up the triangle for the windows. Turned out way better than I thought they would.
Going to include a photo of the underside of the cowl hood I painted today. I'm going to paint the top tomorrow and install, then I will be completely comfortable actually driving the thing around!
Anyway, sorry for the long post, here are the photos!

Hart_Rod 03-03-2008, 05:53 AM Missed this thread somehow. Great looking truck! Love the color. What kit did you order for the exhaust? Can't wait to see pictures of it completely installed.

Good to hear you like the new heads and cam. I have been wanting to order a set of aluminum heads and roller cam setup. Are your heads the Edelbrock RPMs or the non-RPMs?
So what do you think you are at for hp? I have read those Voodoo cams are really nice. How rough is the idle?
Keep up the great work!
whatnow123 03-03-2008, 09:11 AM Great looking truck - how did you "reinforce" the seat mounts? Im REALLY liking those!
I put some steel plates on the underside of the cab where the rear of the seat bolts down.
Missed this thread somehow. Great looking truck! Love the color. What kit did you order for the exhaust? Can't wait to see pictures of it completely installed.
It's the Magnaflow thru X kit for our trucks. It's a well made kit but I don't like how the exhaust exits out the rear on a stepside. Not to mention, it doesn't exatly bolt in do to the way the front angles towards the collector and it didn't clear the non stock pan-hard bar for the over the axle peices. You are going to have to cut it and weld it for a shortbed truck since it's made for non-lowered long bed. I took a gamble but fortunately, I got a great deal on it so I'm still happy, plus it sounds great!

I have no idea what the HP is and the idle is awesome, it's got a little lop to it, but it doesn't shake the car. The heads are the RPM 60899, they were new and never installed. It's the same heads that are used in the "Edelbrock top end power package" that is over 400hp when bolted to a 350 short block with 9.5:1 compression. Billa did a desktop dyno on a similar combo that pulled 413hp and 437tq, so I'm sure it's in the neighborhood. Not to mention my 60+ year old neighbor (who is a car guy and building a 32 coupe) came over checking on my progress like he usually does, I took him for a ride and he was awfully pale when I dropped him off.
tdave00 03-03-2008, 09:23 AM I like the mirrors. They fit well. Care to share any details about them? Brand/Part#/Store purchased from??
Very nice looking truck.

I got them at Pep Boys. No idea on brand or part number. Sorry.
Richard8971 03-03-2008, 08:12 PM Beautiful looking truck, I love the color. Curious, is your '67 with the optional big rear window or do you think the cab at one time been replaced? I'm only asking cause I know the big rear window was an option in '67 but never really knew how many actually came with it. Keep up the good work!

Hey Richard,
Thanks! Wish your build thread would have been started a little earlier, all kinds of tips in there I could have used!
My truck is 67 throughout. The only option it had was the big rear window.
BTW, I got my tweed for the door panels, any install tips to make it conform to the panels?

Tweed will stretch and conform quite nicely. I would say at least make sure its warm when you do it and be sure to wrap the tweed around the back to make sure it sticks. As you press the tweed into place it will stretch and stick due to the contact cement you sprayed. It wont take long to get an idea how much that stuff can stretch. I would also say lay the tweed down loosely but tight enough to get out any wrinkles and then place the door panel on the tweed, not the other way around. It's easier to hold a solid door than a big piece of floppy tweed. Let me know how it goes.

Couch 03-06-2008, 02:55 AM love the truck man. nice job throughout. what color did you go with? i like it
sleric77 03-15-2008, 12:27 AM man your truck is looking good.
kyull67 03-15-2008, 01:57 AM Looks Awesome! What kind of wood are you going to use for the bed?
duane67c-10 03-16-2008, 04:36 AM Sweet Truck!! Love The Color!
72BlckButy 03-26-2008, 06:25 AM What a great build thread.... that thing is sweet!
sleric77 03-26-2008, 10:32 PM Hey thanks a lot 72BlckButy . This is my third 67-72 model truck that I've had it it is the best to build so far. My plans are to give it a old/new school twist. I want to put on the upper and lower molding with a two toned paint job to really make it stand out. If money and the Lord allow me to it should be in the paint shop sometime next month.
72BlckButy 03-26-2008, 10:40 PM sleric77, you might have mentioned this before, but what color is that? Whatever it is, it looks sick on that truck! :D
sleric77 03-26-2008, 10:49 PM which truck are you referring to? the one in my avatar is a teal green.
whatnow123 04-03-2008, 04:37 AM Thanks for all the kind words!! I got the interior "mostly" done. I still need to get the vents and the AC hooked up, then I will install the glove box. I got the door panels in and I must say they look good thanks to the tip I got from Don (Richard8971). I also got the hood on and actually been driving it around... finally. Great steet manors and plenty of get up and go which is what I wanted. I still need to figure out something with the tailpipes, but once that is done I'll start on the bed floor and what seems like a million little things I still need to do, like adjust the headlights...
Anyway, here are the photos.
randomhero472 04-03-2008, 05:04 AM truck looks great man, what are you using for your fuel filler, and any pics of it w/the bed floor in?
Richard8971 04-20-2008, 08:16 AM they look good thanks to the tip I got from Don (Richard8971)
(blush) awwwwww, thanks man!
Interior looks awesome! Those buckets are sweeeeeeet! I still love the color, gunmetal is one of my favs.

Richard8971 04-20-2008, 08:50 PM Last time I looked, you can get a front roll pan from LMC.

whatnow123 05-15-2008, 07:31 AM Hi Everyone!
Thanks for all the kind words!
Just an update, I haven't spent much time lately working on it since it's road worthy, but I had the day off and decided to finish up the AC system. I installed the condenser, chrome compressor hoses and charged it up. All I can say is Vintage Air is the way to go on these trucks. Plenty of air movement and it’s freezing cold. I pieced mine together because I got a deal on the evap, but recommend to anyone to just get the kit. It’s all the little stuff that is pain to find.
I also have some pics of the back half of my exhaust. I bought the magnaflow kit for our trucks, but didn’t like the way the rear pipes were, they hung too low and I wasn’t exactly a fan on how they exited the rear, but it might be because I have a stepside. I included a photo, but it wasn’t all the way installed, just for reference. Anyway, I dropped the truck off at Midas by my work to see what they could do from the mufflers back. I will tell you, I couldn’t be happier with how they did it and can't believe that they didn't do the kit this way to begin with as it's much better install. It’s not stainless, but it looks great, totally tucked up and they got around the super-track bar and rear tank with no issues. That was part of the problem with the Magna kit as the exhaust on the passenger side didn’t fit with the non stock stuff.
Anyway, here’s the photos. Just need find some chrome tips I like, then on to the bed floor!
b&a72 05-15-2008, 06:23 PM Sweet looking ride!
AJohn6 05-18-2008, 05:29 PM Man you have a smooth build going. I really like your seats, I am waiting until I get up to NC to start searching the junkyards for mine. The truck looks great, I am jealous. :metal:
70rs/ss 05-19-2008, 08:50 AM Man, I need to come down and take a ride!! I can't believe how fast you got to this point, it was nice when I dropped the rear off, but was in primer and you were going to do some motor work? I'll bet it hauls @$$! Man, wanna finish my 2WD Blazer??!! J/K BTW I met with my surgeon, dound out I have a boken vertebra (2 places) as well as a spial impingement (30%) pushed in, I wonder if that's why I was so unwilling and unable to deal with the pain on toomanytoyz' build?!?! I about fell over when he said "ya it's broken in two places and you could reach to tie your shoes and be paralyzed!! June 10 I go under the knife, so if I get down your way before, I'd really like to take a ride, and drooooool on that sweet thing!!
Later, Mike
b&a72 05-19-2008, 06:41 PM How easy was it to put that seat in, as far as holes lining up etc?
whatnow123 05-20-2008, 01:58 AM Mike, just let me know when you come down, I'd be happy to take you for a spin! I'm planning on taking it down to "run what you brung" here a couple of weeks just see what it does but want to get the bed and tailgate on to add some weight to the rear as right now it's worthless under 40 or so.
How easy was it to put that seat in, as far as holes lining up etc?
The seats were fairly easy but you do need to drill new holes and reinforce under the cab for saftey reasons, but it required very little fabrication.
whatnow123 05-22-2008, 08:04 AM Just a sneak peek at the bed...
What a bitch it is to install on the truck...
I'm not sure I'm happy with the far left piece that I got with my "kit" from Mar-K. I'm fabin up my fuel filler and I don't know about using this piece.
What do you think?
hotrod 80 05-22-2008, 08:10 AM I also bought the magnaflow kit and thought the same thing about the tail pipes . How well does the new A/C work ?
tdave00 05-22-2008, 08:16 AM I would send them that picture and ask for another piece that matches the other wood. Don't put it in.
Bishops Trucks 05-22-2008, 08:40 AM I don't like that piece either. I agree with tdave00, have them send you a new piece that matches the rest.
sleric77 05-22-2008, 08:58 PM Man that looks awesome , but they could match the wood better.
Blue'72 05-22-2008, 09:16 PM Great looking truck! If mine turns out half this nice I'll be happy. You don't by chance have a sound clip of the exhaust do you? Those are the same mufflers I have for mine and I'm hoping I'll be really happy with them.
Now drive it up north, I want a ride in it too! :)
MAR-Ktech 05-23-2008, 10:28 PM We sent some information directly to this customer and we are sending him a replacement board. However, here is some helpful information for other customers who might be thinking of ordering pine wood for their beds:
Due to the characteristics of pine, which is classified as a soft wood, the stain soaks into the areas between the grain but not the grain itself. Since the wide boards are by necessity cut from the center of the tree the rings tend to be larger and more prominent on the wide boards making it more likely that it will not take the stain as well.
We will be posting this additional information on our website and making our salespeople aware so we can better inform our customers. It is our recommendation that pine should either be painted (as was the original wood beds) or finished with clear coat, rather than stained. And, for show quality beds we recommend using oak as the grain is tighter and more uniform.
You can see more information on bed wood finishes and about how well the painted boards withstand the test of time at our website. Go to the following link: http://www.mar-k.com/wood_finish_testing_ii.html
Thanks so much for letting us post!
whatnow123 05-25-2008, 08:31 PM We sent some information directly to this customer and we are sending him a replacement board.
Wow, these guys are good! Not only are they sending a replacment board with no questions asked, they found my build thread where I was seeking opinions on the one I got! They are regular detectives!
Anyway, this is very cool of them and I have already got my tracking number for the replacement board. What a class operation!
whatnow123 05-25-2008, 08:49 PM I also bought the magnaflow kit and thought the same thing about the tail pipes . How well does the new A/C work ?
The AC Works great! No complaints at all. Some say the high setting is a little loud on the vintage air units, but I don't think it's any louder than any other car I have owned. I do have to swap out the radiator as the temp now swings up in traffic. I took the advise of a buddy of mine and bought a "stock" aluminum replacment for the 3 core units as he said it will work better, but I just don't think it's enough with AC and the desert heat.
Great looking truck! If mine turns out half this nice I'll be happy. You don't by chance have a sound clip of the exhaust do you? Those are the same mufflers I have for mine and I'm hoping I'll be really happy with them.
Now drive it up north, I want a ride in it too! :)
Hey, thanks for the complement! It gets a lot of attention when I'm out and about which is taking some getting use to.
I don't have a way to record the exhaust tone, but I will say that it was a great choice for the mufflers. They have a low rumble at partial throttle, doesn't attract much attention just driving around and you can have a normal conversation at highway speeds, but they wake right up when you get on it! Perfect combination I think.
kyull67 05-26-2008, 05:47 AM Mar-k is great! I've always had good dealings with them.
original_balzer 05-27-2008, 09:57 PM VERY nice truck cool build. I was wondering if you had a pic of the pass side with the old style bed on it?
ALSO whats this I circled in yellow? I tried to zoom but my computer is old and not very clear it just looked like a cig lighter.

Sorry, I don't have any other pictures of the older bed than the one on the first page. To be honest, it's not a bad look and it's 10 times better than the newer beds, but it limits the size tire you can run which is the drawback.
As far as this photo, that is a spring that someone prior JB Welded to the dash. I'm assuming it's to keep the glove box door from rattling. I liked it so I left it on there. We'll see once I get the box on how functional it is.
jayssunm 06-14-2008, 03:02 PM Sorry I missed this thread originally. Curious how the sounds is inside the cab? I know the 67-68 did not have a header and just have metal. Seems like you applied sound dampener to the floor and back of the cab but if you did it again would you do the ceiling too?
whatnow123 08-22-2008, 03:20 PM I pulled the truck out of the garage today and drove it over to the bank and decided to snap a couple of photos while it was out as I never did post a finished bed picture. MAR-K sent me a replacement board, no questions asked becuase the grain was so odd on that one. But it completely matches the rest now. I also decided to mount the gas filler in the side instead of the floor. I like it better I think and it's way more funtional.
I also wanted to show the completed exhuast minus the tips (haven't put them on yet) as really like how it exits. I also blurred my plate. I've seen others do this, not sure why but I did it anyway. Anyone know why?
I haven't done much else to it as I'm waiting for the weather to cool down a bit to do all the little things it still needs, like the tailgate for one.

I didn't do anything to roof other than paint it. It was hot out there today so I touched my hand to it and sure enough, it was pretty warm. Not sure how much sound comes though the roof, but it's fairly quiet inside until you get on it :metal:
sebas213 10-05-2008, 05:16 PM Hello, fantastic truck, congratulations. Can you tell me about your wheels and tires? what size are that and who much are that? some link to see them, I live in Argentina and I want to buy to my truck if is it possible. thanks buddie.
Richard8971 10-09-2008, 10:01 PM Love the bed wood. I think that is one of the things I love most about old trucks. Sadly when I get mine back from Oregon, I am going to have to convert my truck into a work truck. Oh well... I think a flush mount hard tonneau (painted the color of the truck) will look good. I have to carry supplies so my nice bed wood will be hidden. I might pull the wood out and rails and just use plain 3/4" ply so I don't mess up my good stuff. The inside of the bed I can put a cover over it so it doesn't get scratched.
Keep up the great work.
BTW, what part of AZ are you in. I just moved back to Tucson!

Hey there!
The wheels are Boyd Coddington Smoothie 2's. 17x8 front, 17x10 rear and the tires are 17/275/50 front and 17/285/60 rears. The rims are 4.5 backspacing on all 4, but you should measure yours for the backspacing you want.
I ordered mine from Discount Tire Direct (you have to call them) but here is a link to the wheels.

Thanks for the complement and welcome to AZ! I'm up in the Phoenix area.
Also, Riveted1 is planning a "board meet" for the 25th of this month. So if you have a few hours to burn to drive up, I'd love to meet you as I'm sure others would as well.

Very nice looking truck, and very nice work. I like the silver on there, with the rims and black interior.
Anyhow, I'm surprised that no one else has answered this yet. I do it because of security reasons. If the plate is visible, then anyone can pull up anything they want from your vehicle. Name, address, SSN, etc. Doesn't take much, but these are my reasons
By the way, I also noticed that you said the engine is .060 over. With a stock crank, that should make it a 360, not a 355. A 355 will have a .030 overbore, with the stock crank.
