Ok I may have been duped. The old man I bought the burb from told me it had the original engine. I am adding a pic below because everything looks correct to me. I went to autozone to get stuff for a tuneup. The plugs and plug wires I got for a 1971 Suburban 350 would not work on my engine. So I went back and he got me plugs and plug wires for a 75ish 350 block. These worked. So I am feeling a little disapointed now.
Can someone tell me where the engine would be stamped or any other ways to identify if this is indeed the original engine, or if the autozone guy is right?
Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks.:whine:

If that is the case, it sounds like maybe your distributor may be an HEI instead of the original points dist that the 71 came with. Can't tell though because your aircleaner is blocking the view. The quickest way to tell is if you have a seperate coil, then you have points, if the coil is mounted on top of the dist. cap, then you have HEI...

thanks bagged, I have a seperate coil. I did a search on the forum, which I should have done first I guess. I will use these other threads to do some investigating. Thanks though.

As JDL suggested the stamped information can be used for identification of the engine. Part of the stampings, (last 3 letters) is the suffix code and can be very helpful if looked up. Here is a link to a site that lists suffix codes:

The engine outwardly has a lot of the original parts so it would be possible that the engine is original.
