I need to know what all I need to buy. My son is moving back home with his Dell laptop and I have been instructed by the boss :rolleyes: to add wireless to the PC. Right now I don't have any network set up.
I also just thought that if I'm doing that I should probably add a card to an older PC that I have that's still running W98, if it's not too much of a problem.

I can send you a network card if you want one, I have about 5 billion spares. You just need a wireless router. I like Linksys, myself. If your modem is near the main computer, I would get a wireless router that has wired ports on the back and then wireless also. I would wire from the modem, into the router, then wire the main computer up to the router, and your son can share the router via wireless. Make sense?
You might need a couple network cables to make this work. I can make a couple for you, test and send with the network card if you want. You pay shipping - cables are free to you, bud. Beats paying $10 each at Beast Buy or Circuit ****ty :D
It would be helpful to know who you're using for an Internet Service Provider. Cable, Satellite or DSL? Just curious - some require special setup. I can recommend a router based on that info.

I have cable from Cox. Board in this computer is Asus and I'm running xp. Modem is right by the cpu. The other is an old Dell GXi iirc, not to sure about putting xp or w2k on it.

is your older PC next to the modem? then it could get hooked up with a cable or a wireless PCI card if its far away. I take it that your sons Dell has wireless already? if not then he will need a PMCIA card for it.

Dell laptop should have wifi in it alread. I don't think they make laptops anymore without.
Sounds like the downstairs PC will need a wifi card, the one by the modem will need a ethernet card. I could literally make you a 40' cable...but you gotta tell me if it's reasonable for you to make a wire run like that :D or if it's smarter to go wireless.
