How do I get rid of these to view pics on threads?

Somebody posted a way to see them a few weeks ago, but I can't find the post. I think I clicked on the "post reply" button, then located the offending red X in the posts leading up under the reply field. I think clicking on THAT red X was what made the picture appear.
