View Full Version : I have a "New" project:
grendel 12-21-2006, 09:18 PM A 1970 (small rear window) C50 Wrecker.
Pics will be coming soon.
The plan:
Make it four wheel drive. I have an SM465, 203/205 doubler combo for it. I will also install a set of 2.5ton Rockwells under it...
bowtiehotrodder 12-21-2006, 09:40 PM you know we NEED PIC> NOW we will go thru withdraws with out them nnnnnooowww thanks good project
Robert1970C20rstbukt 12-21-2006, 10:30 PM Sounds like a cool project! (BTW all conventional C40-C90?'s had small back windows, I used to drive a '70 C/50 grain truck and it also had a small back window, not sure why GM did that)
1969k10stepside 12-21-2006, 10:59 PM :agree:Sounds like a cool project

Ok, so maybe it's not a 67. It was listed as a 70, but when I saw it, I thought 67.
I will probably be swapping a C10 cab onto it, as this one's rusted.
72freak 12-22-2006, 05:22 AM Here is mine........GMC 5500. Ive been plaing with it for a few years. Its about done except for paint and body

You know of course you have me drooling with thoughts of that truck as a finished product :metal:

The only problem that I have with the axle combo is weight handling.
I am thinking 5 tons may have to do it.
The C50 is a five ton truck, right? GCVW on this is from 15K to 26,500.
If I went with the 5 ton axles from a mil spec truck, that would be 20K. Still not enough to hit the top GCVW.
CUSTOM/10 12-22-2006, 09:36 AM Guess I'll have to stop by and see this beast, once I get my Christmas shopping done. Maybe we can put this cab on it !!!

I am around all day... heck, unless you're taking the yellow one it may go on this!
The wrecker bed's going to be sandblasted, repaired and powder coated.
Jim brought back a HUGE powdercoating oven for a gent over in Merrimack who still apparently owes him a bit...
CUSTOM/10 12-22-2006, 09:51 AM I'm kinda liken the yellow one.
grendel 12-22-2006, 09:59 AM I'm kinda liken the yellow one.
Heh, gee, I wonder why?
:)
Sell off your other one then. The Yellow's yours.
You may have to help with cab corners and rockers on one of these...
CUSTOM/10 12-22-2006, 10:08 AM Might stop by IF they let us out early. Have to go to Salem then swing by if it's not too late. The one in the pic dosen't need much, just a little TLC. :)
grendel 12-22-2006, 11:16 AM Pics:
Sorry for the trees where she sits... it's a bit tough to move this sucker around, without it running.
Stats:
Tired worn out 292 (I assume) I-6
Some sort of 5 speed transmission
HUGE rear axle
dry rotted tires
a ton of bondo
and 15-20 layers of peeling paint over rust.
The plan:
free flowing 350 or a 427 Tall deck.
Might fix this cab, might swap on the one seen above.
keep it pretty low, but run a 46" Michelin Mil Tire on 20" rims.
disk brakes in the front, pinion brakes with drums on the rear. Should stop on a dime!
jerry moss 12-22-2006, 12:22 PM around here the phone company and pacific gas & electric both use all wheel drive BIG trucks for boom trucks and cable stretchers. theres a f*&d f-700? in a local wrecking yard with some gnarly all wheel drive axles, huge transfer case and transmission still in it. both companies also use G.M. trucks that are real monsters, they sit so tall that the headlights are in the bumper--i assume to meet calif's headlight height laws. if you could pick one up at auction for the right price, you would have a matched set of HEAVY DUTY running gear components.
looks like a fun project, please post more pics as you make progress.:phat:
72LoBurb 12-23-2006, 03:57 AM Do you know if that was a manufactured(ie Holmes, Century) towing deck or a homemade unit? Some specs on the towing deck would be interesting, to me anyways.

It's a Holmes 660
72armyswbtruck 12-23-2006, 06:46 PM What a magnificent Beast
Robert1970C20rstbukt 12-23-2006, 07:49 PM Judging by the front sidemarkers on the fenders and the newer style cab lights that would be a '70, very cool! :metal: That 5 speed is probably a Spicer, Clark, or a New Process. Is that a hi-lo axle or a single speed?

It's a 2 speed rear axle (hi-lo).
I haven't looked, but it's probably a Clark. I may try adapting a t-case to the butt end of it.
1969k10stepside 12-23-2006, 07:56 PM Now that I have seen pics I can say that truck will be huge. You have your work cut out for you.Cant wait till I see some pics of it up in the air

Actually, size won't increase too much. Those tires on there are pretty large. I am guessing about 36" tall.
1969k10stepside 12-23-2006, 08:13 PM Guess you need some 44's or bigger then:D
earl87gta 12-23-2006, 08:16 PM That thing is way cool I think I would have to put a 5.9 diesel in it with all the power add ons.
jaros44sr 12-23-2006, 08:23 PM Great project, cool truck. I forgot how good those old beasts look, thanks for bringing back the memories. More pics as you get to move it. I can just imagine how much work is involved that project, have fun. J.
Is that the same size cab as the pickups??
grendel 12-23-2006, 08:51 PM Guess you need some 44's or bigger then:D
The plan is for MICHELIN XZL's 16.00 R20
Roughly a 46" tire with the appropriate load rating.

From everything I've read, yes. It just sits higher on the frame.
The doors look about the same, but have the front lower corner cut off to clear the C50 style fender. When I get ready to do this, I will pull out the interior of this truck and do a true assessment on it.
Transmission and 1st t-case are sitting in my garage. It's a SM465 with a NP203. The 203 will be cut down to just the low range box and I'll add a 205 behind it.
I also have the motor, a 427 Tall Deck.
69-350 12-24-2006, 02:07 AM wow, now this will be one hell of a project. you should have something mighty cool to play with when you're done. this will be another 'build thread' to subscribe to, I really want to see the end results of this one. good luck
grendel 12-25-2006, 09:58 AM I think I found the second t-case for it:
http://www.jbconversions.com/images/products/lomax205/complete/leadin.jpg
On Pirate's they (JB Conversions, LoMax) advertise these for big trucks :)
I wonder if they meant THIS big?
:)
7387chevys 12-28-2006, 10:26 PM C50 would be 2 TON 10 = 1/2 TON 20 =3/4 TON 30 = 1 TON 40 =1.5 TON 50 = 2 TON
Thats gonna be one awesome ride .....build thread........

Nope. This is deader than a door nail. Stripped and sent off to the crusher.
