Ok fellas iv'e got a bit of a problem. I've got part of if fixed thanks to some of the guys answering my earlier plea. I have a 68 that i've rigged the back up lights as my tail lights I Jb welded the taillight lumes and they fit great. I was getting one light brighter than the other when when I used the brakes. The other thing is that when I had the night lights on the brakes wouldn't work. I figured out that problem.

What I have now is the signal lights at night one light shuts off when I use the opposite signal. (Right the left goes out vise versa). The worse thing I have is when the night lights are on and the brakes are applied my left light goes out.... What do you recommend I do to remedy both problems. Electrical has always been my weak point....:m6:

I don't mean to be a prig here, but I do not totally understand what you did or why. That makes it kind of hard to help out, but I'll give it a shot. This will probably take a few back and forths.

1) What did you JB weld? Wires or bulb sockets? If you did JB weld to splice wires, that is definitely not the best way to do that!! I'm not saying you wouldn't get good contact, but I would be highly suspect of it lasting for very long.

2) Backup lights are normally single element bulbs. Their sockets in the housings would have just one electrical contact (the housing itself serves as ground). On the flip side, the tail lights are dual element bulbs and their sockets have two separate contacts. Sometimes with this type of bulb you will have two different intensity filaments inside of the bulb, so you will have one circuit that will be brighter than the other with nothing out of the ordinary for that bulb. If you tried to wire up your tail lights to the existing backup light housings and bulbs by connecting the turn signal wire and running light wire to the wire from the backup light, then you would conceivably have a problem similar to what you are describing (I think). The reason has to do with the sequence of the ground and the turn signal flashers. If I had to guessm, I think this is what your problem is.

Let me know if this helps.

The wires are taped together for now until I figure out the problem. The socket is jb welded to the back up light housing. 2 wires on each light are connected but the problems im having are Driver side tail light goes off entirely when the brakes are applied when the night lighs are on. 2nd problem i'm having is the turn signal I'm using L or R makes the oposite light go out....I know what I screwed up big time was I used to power wires to the passenter side. It's been cut before because they used black wire for a power. Somehow I used two power wires on that lume making the short. I assumed it was a ground and that messed me up. However it was much worse. At least I can drive durring the day it's at night when I've got the problems.

Incidentally, what year truck? Is this a fleetside or a stepside? What happened to the backup lights?

Is there a plug at the rear crossmember where the intermediate harness (coming from the fuse block) ends and where a harness for the taillights in the bed plugs in? If there is, then I suggest you take a test light and check out all of the wiring combinations at the plug to make sure everything is making its way to the back correct. Check all of the combinations--turn signals, brakes, lights on and off.
