shifty 12-30-2006, 12:10 PM Please do a System Restore to a date BEFORE you got infected.
Then download Ewido (Google for it), update Ewido after install, then reboot in Safe mode and scan to remove the bad stuff.
Sorry, couldn't answer sooner, was travelling for the holidays.
truckdude239 12-30-2006, 07:29 PM umm thats the problem i umm turned off my system restore becuase my virus program said there was a virus in it then turned it back on after i thought i got everything
shifty 12-30-2006, 11:07 PM Ddownload Ewido: http://www.ewido.net/en/
Install Ewido. After installation, update the software using the update feature. DO NOT scan your computer yet.
Reboot your computer in Safe Mode. For more info on how to do this, please read this page: http://www.pchell.com/support/safemode.shtml
Once rebooted in Safe mode, please open Ewido and do a full system scan. This will take quite a while to complete, so go out and have some lunch while you wait.
After it's done, please reboot the computer, do another scan with Hijackthis and post a fresh logfile for me. I will find any other crap in there you can nuke.
shifty 12-30-2006, 11:09 PM PS - I am 99% sure these two are causing your problems, but Ewido will definitely clean up that and anything else in there if run from safe mode with all updates installed.

truckdude239 12-31-2006, 01:01 AM oh i also installed 77 window update yesterday but it was after the problem started
shifty 12-31-2006, 11:49 AM 77 updates? Why did you wait so long to install those?! :D One of them may have been the ticket to preventing this infection.
Strange, I do not see Ewido installed anywhere on your system in the log above. You sure you installed it and scanned?
Please do this:
Press CTRL+ALT+DEL.
Click Task Manager button.
Click Processes tab.
Fill in the checkbox for "show all processes".
Sort the column by "Image" name.
Look for "exitwait.exe".
Highlight it and choose End Task.
Wait a second and make sure it doesn't reappear.
Open Hijackthis.
Scan only.
Find and fix this line:
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [two meta] C:\DOCUME~1\DAVID~1.DAV\APPLIC~1\DEADFA~1\exitwait.exe
Reboot.
truckdude239 12-31-2006, 06:21 PM when i went to the website it said ewido was no longer avileable but the avg antispyware ware replaced it. "ewido anti-spyware 4.0 has been replaced by AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5 and isn't available for sale and download anymore (under the old name). Instead, please try our new, highly improved version: AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5 " http://www.ewido.net/en/
truckdude239 12-31-2006, 06:27 PM new hijack this i could not find exitwait under processes so i just fixed the line

truckdude239 12-31-2006, 06:37 PM that seems to have done the trick no pop-up or freezing yet
truckdude239 01-01-2007, 12:03 AM nm still got pop-up they came back i know this all started when i downloaded an active-x object that said need to be installed to display a web page
shifty 01-01-2007, 06:22 PM Sorry about the Ewido thing, I wasn't aware of that!!!
Not sure why the popups are still happening. Does it occur with IE only, or with Firefox also?
What happens if you go to http://housecall.trendmicro.com and do a complete scan for everything, including viruses and spyware?
truckdude239 01-01-2007, 07:39 PM it found 1 adware loop something and cookies and cleaned and removed both pop-ups only in ie

shifty 01-01-2007, 11:04 PM Notice this line has returned:
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [two meta] C:\DOCUME~1\DAVID~1.DAV\APPLIC~1\DEADFA~1\exitwait.exe
Please follow:
Go to C:\DOCUMENTS AND SETTINGS\. Look for a folder that has ends in ".DAV" inside that folder, go to the APPLICATION DATA folder and look for a folder name starting with "DEADFA...". Inside that folder will be a file named "exitwait.exe". Rename it to something other than exitwait.exe. If it refuses to let you rename it, please post back here for me and let me know. We'll work around the problem.
If you are able to rename it, please repeat the CTRL+ALT+DEL steps above.
Next, open Hijackthis. scan for that bastard line I posted above. Check it off and fix it.
Next, reboot.
Next, go back into that APPLICATION DATA folder and nuke the "DEADFA..." folder entirely. If you cannot, please post back why you are not able to.
truckdude239 01-02-2007, 12:23 AM i still can not find it in the alt ctrl delete under processes. i did find the folder and rename it can i just go into save mode and delete the whole folder?
truckdude239 01-02-2007, 12:34 AM okay fixed the line then rebooted in safe mode and deleted the whole folder so far so good
shifty 01-02-2007, 11:18 AM Make sure you fix that line in Hijackthis also, if you haven't already.
When I said CTRL ALT DEL, I just meant press the CTRL and ALT and DEL buttons all at the same time. This will make a popup menu appear, and you can click "Task Manager" button to go in and see lots of stats and other items about your computer.
truckdude239 01-02-2007, 11:24 AM i know about that i didn't see it in the list i fixed the line first then deleted the folder so far so good
shifty 01-02-2007, 11:45 AM Perfect. I am not sure why AVG Antispy and housecall didn't find that guy, but it was the source of the popups.
Do you happen to remember what the folder name was? DEADFA--- what was the rest? I am curious to find out more info about that particular infection. It's not coded in a very smart way, so ... I am kinda wondering why Avast and AVG wouldn't detect it.
truckdude239 01-02-2007, 03:39 PM it was called deadfastbuild
shifty 01-02-2007, 04:19 PM Ok, I'm convinced that it used random naming conventions then. It must have a word dictionary and it picks 2-3 words out of the dictionary to name the folder, the files and other items to prevent detection. I'm interested. I'm gonna try to find more info on this one. I almost wish you still had the *.exe file so I could submit it to SARC and AVG for review and tagging.
shifty 01-02-2007, 04:24 PM Ok, it was Adware.Lop.Process. One variant thereof. Nasty little bugger. I started searching on the 10-12 distinct words and found it that way. It uses random naming. Surprised AVG didn't find the content of the executable using heuristics. Housecall only picked off one of the two versions of it. Interesting stuff .....
truckdude239 01-02-2007, 09:52 PM there was about 3 or 4 .exe files in the folder
truckdude239 01-06-2007, 12:02 AM okay my computer started acting up again today i don't know why. it started when i was play world of war craft and it randomly freezes up the whole computer. don't matter what I'm doing it does it I'm getting so upset I'm about ready to format and start over again

truckdude239 01-06-2007, 12:05 AM by the way i got a Dfi lanparty ut nf4 expert broad amd athlon 64 2.4 1 gig of ocz platinum . and 2xfx extemee 6800 card hooked up with sli
shifty 01-06-2007, 02:22 PM I don't see anything in there that looks bad to me. I really wish you previously had System Restore enabled...it's way better than a format and reinstall.
Do you have any way to monitor the temp of your video cards while in-game? What about temps on your CPU while in-game?
truckdude239 01-06-2007, 07:11 PM i use speed fan it will give a warning when the computer gets to hot it always reads good it doesn't only do it in game but just sitting here typing it does it
shifty 01-07-2007, 11:47 AM Does it only freeze in-game?
truckdude239 01-07-2007, 08:34 PM no it will do it all the time no matter what i doing
shifty 01-07-2007, 10:36 PM Ah, ok. I'm going to keep asking you questions, you know? :D
Does it tend to happen randomly?
After it happens once, does it occur more frequently after that?
When it freezes up, if you press the CAPS LOCK button a few times, does the CAPS LOCK indicator turn on and off?
Do you still have your original XP install disc?
truckdude239 01-08-2007, 08:41 PM yes it is random it occurs pretty frequently after it happens , and no the cap locks wont light up when froze. i did a defrag last night before i went to bed and it froze at 8 percent sometime in the middle of the night, and it would not do anything at all. restarted defrag it finished and it seems to be doing better now it has 53 percent file fragmention
shifty 01-08-2007, 09:13 PM Wow, that is unusually high frag percentage for a new rig.
If it happens once after some time, or under heavy load, then continues to happen regularly afterwards, that's usually an indicator of an overheat - either GPU overheating, CPU overheating, etc.
It can also be caused by a memory leak. You can check this pretty easily. Memory usage statistics are shown in the task manager (press CTRL+ALT+DEL, choose Task Manager, click Processes tab, check "show processes from all users"). You can sort the task manager columns by memory usage. Anything over 70-80k is a little outlandish (I say that, but IE7 is using 62MB of memory on mine right now).
You can test for bad RAM. Download 'Memtest32' and run a gaggle of tests to validate your memory sticks.
If you have the original install CD (you never confirmed), you can pop it in, then go to a RUN window (Start Menu>Run) and type sfc /scannow to begin a check of all system files on your computer to ensure one of the nasties you got didn't screw with any system file. This comes highly recommended.
If you still have your original XP key, you could do a repair install of XP, which will save all of your settings, files and programs, but clean up your installation. Afterwards, you will need to re-install any service packs and updates previously on the system. This is usually a flawless operation.
I take it this started after the infection, and never before. If that's not the case, I'd like to know.
I hope you have System Restore turned on at this point ;)
truckdude239 01-08-2007, 11:01 PM where do u get Memtest32 at?
shifty 01-08-2007, 11:39 PM www.memtest86.com ? ;)
Google is your friend!
http://www.google.com/search?sourceid=navclient&ie=UTF-8&rls=GGLG,GGLG:2006-04,GGLG:en&q=memtest86
Should have easy to follow instructions at their site.
truckdude239 01-15-2007, 12:50 AM okay turn out my processor is overheating running at almost 55c in game i have a stock heatsys and fan. computer runs alsome during first start up when it is cold i am looking at upgrading the heasys and fan i have a socket 939 what whould be a good one someone would recommend?
shifty 01-15-2007, 10:54 AM I'm using the Arctic Cooler pro 7 or something like that? I got it at Newegg.
55º is far from overheating. 65º+ is overheating. Your computer shouldn't be screwing up at those temps, I don't think.
It really does sound like a heat problem, except one thing: normally when overheating occurs, it will take some time to lock up, then the computer will lock up frequently once the overheat temp has been reached.
http://www.extremeoverclocking.com/articles/guides/Power_Supply_Guide_7.html
Using that, you should hopefully at least be able to rule out the power supply as the problem.
I would double-check all of your power connectors to the mainboard.
What were the results of Memtest?
truckdude239 01-15-2007, 05:48 PM I never could figure out how to use the program i checked all power connections and there fine power suppy is a http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16817374001 looking at gettign one of these
http://www.newegg.com/Product/ShowImage.asp?Image=17%2D153%2D039%2D13%2Ejpg%2C17%2D153%2D039%2D12%2Ejpg%2C17%2D153%2D039%2D02%2Ejp g%2C17%2D153%2D039%2D03%2Ejpg%2C17%2D153%2D039%2D04%2Ejpg%2C17%2D153%2D039%2D05%2Ejpg%2C17%2D153%2D0 39%2D06%2Ejpg%2C17%2D153%2D039%2D07%2Ejpg%2C17%2D153%2D039%2D08%2Ejpg%2C17%2D153%2D039%2D09%2Ejpg%2C 17%2D153%2D039%2D10%2Ejpg&CurImage=17%2D153%2D039%2D13%2Ejpg&Description=Thermaltake+W0106RU+Complies+with+ATX+12V+2%2E2+%26+EPS+12V+version+700W+Power+Supply+%2 D+Retail
shifty 01-15-2007, 06:03 PM Be sure to read the reviews on that first one:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/CustratingReview.asp?item=N82E16817374001
At least two of the top 10 reviews cite "blew up" "squirted red liquid all over my case", "smoke damage" etc. Never heard of In-Win before.
That Toughpower unit - I just installed the 750w version of that in a wicked gaming system I built for a forum member. Works like a champ. Really quiet. Solid power.
shifty 01-15-2007, 06:04 PM Hey - you never did clarify - were you experiencing the lockups/ freezes BEFORE you were infected?
truckdude239 01-15-2007, 06:05 PM no i wasn't, i haven't had alot of trouble since defrag but every so often i get some problems
shifty 01-15-2007, 06:07 PM So, zero problems before that?
Did you run a system file check (sfc /scannow in the RUN window)?
truckdude239 01-15-2007, 06:08 PM think i am going to upgrade to the 750 sometime soon dfi recommends at least a 700 for my motherboard with the 2 cards on it
shifty 01-15-2007, 06:17 PM It's a nice unit if you get it. I went with Antec, can't remember the wattage - think it was a 750.
I can't help but think a Repair Install of XP would possibly solve the problem. It really sounds like something got permanently changed in the system config/system files that is causing your problems, if it started only immediately after getting infected.
Repair install will basically repair your current install without screwing up your current programs or settings. Any interest?
truckdude239 01-15-2007, 10:07 PM i did the repair i'll let you know how it works. i love this computer my graphics in game are amazing. seeing this is my frist sli computer its pretty cool . but so far so good my internet is fast again
truckdude239 01-16-2007, 10:08 PM the darn pop-ups are back heres hi jack this the exitwait is now back

truckdude239 01-16-2007, 10:13 PM deleted it and fixed the line once again
shifty 01-16-2007, 10:33 PM I can't help but wonder if you keep going back to the same site and getting reinfected OR if there is some file in your Windows/System32 folder that is repeatedly reinstalling things. OR if maybe there are more than one people logging into your computer, and the other person's account may have the infected file(s) also, which are causing your problems.
Please download this: http://noahdfear.geekstogo.com/click%20counter/click.php?id=1
Save the file to your desktop. Double click it to extract the contents to a folder of its own. Restart your computer in safe mode, logon as yourself, open the smitRem folder and double click the RunThis.bat file to start the tool.
Follow the prompts on screen and allow disk cleanup to complete.
Note: If you use the "XP theme" you may experience a change to the Classic Windows theme. This can be changed on the themes tab of desktop properties.
truckdude239 01-16-2007, 10:58 PM okay the program did not find anything that i saw i delted the folder in safe mode and fixed the line in hijack this
shifty 01-16-2007, 11:41 PM Ok. Just weirds me out that something like that came back. That kind of thing only happens if you go back to the place you got it from, or if it's tied to you opening a program (maybe pirated software? maybe a corrupted file on your computer?), or if it's tied to another user account (and installs when they sign on) or if it still has a core piece hidden on your system that re-installs itself every so often until you remove that hidden piece.
I will tell you this: Sometimes if you sort files in the System32 directory by date you can uncover most infectious items. We can give it a shot if you have five minutes.
Open My Computer (or the file explorer).
Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
Select the View Tab.
Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Show hidden files and folders.
Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
Click Yes to confirm.
Click OK.
After these changes are applied, navigate to C:\Windows\System32 (May be C:\winnt\system32, it varies on some systems).
Sort the files by the date column until the most recent file is on top. This normally takes one or two clicks. When that is done, take a screencap of the files for me and I'll look them over.
When you're done, you can re-sort by the file name column, or just leave it be.
I will be looking for specific file names. Screen cap with those file names visible is most useful. You can crop out any of the other info.

shifty 01-17-2007, 12:06 PM Hey bud,
Thanks for posting those - but all I wanted was one picture - just click to sort the columns by date until you see something like this (newest files at the top of the list):
http://satellitehead.com/uploads/examplesys32.jpg
I just want to see the most recent files appended to that folder. I don't care about the actual folders or any files dated older than Dec 2006.

shifty 01-17-2007, 10:43 PM cool, thanks David.
i don't see anything weird in there. i have never seen those manifest files before, that's a new one on me. not sure what they are. i don't see anything malicious. you might do the same for the C:\Windows\ folder and look for weird stuff there as well, but system32 looks good.
truckdude239 01-17-2007, 11:23 PM i got a new virus scan program today called kaspersky it picked up a trogen downloader and a few other things
