You are infected with a couple of items which cannot easily be fixed using Hijackthis. Please do the following:

"Scan only" with Hijackthis and put a checkmark next to all of the "O18 - Protocol: " lines and click FIX.

Next, download Ewido: http://www.ewido.net/en/

Install Ewido. After installation, update the software using the update feature. DO NOT scan your computer yet.

Reboot your computer in Safe Mode. For more info on how to do this, please read this page: http://www.pchell.com/support/safemode.shtml

Once rebooted in Safe mode, please open Ewido and do a full system scan. This will take quite a while to complete, so go out and have some lunch while you wait.

After it's done, please reboot the computer, do another scan with Hijackthis and post a fresh logfile for me. I will find any other crap you can remove which is legitimate but totally unnecessary and we'll go from there.

Please follow the instructions with regard to installing Ewido given in my last post.

If you have already done this, please verify that you are giving me a clean log after performing the steps regarding Ewido. If any of the steps given in the instructions regarding Ewido, booting into Safe Mode, or others are confusing, feel free to ask more questions - I'm happy to help you understand if you try the steps and they don't seem to work.

Ewido is going to clean most of the nasty stuff out of your system. I see at least one hijacker in there that is really hard to get rid of, but Ewido is one of the few pieces of software I think is capable of doing it.

Shifty, below are two scans. One of the AVG scan, the next is a current hijackthis. I failed to do an update on AVG, so that was on me. The two hijack logs look the same, is that correct or is there still issues? Once again thanks for your time and efforts.

Right, but a couple of posts up I asked you to go to Ewido.com and download their software and install it. I still need you to follow the instructions in that post before giving me a new Hijackthis Log. Here are the instructions again:

... download Ewido: http://www.ewido.net/en/

Install Ewido. After installation, open Ewido and use the 'update' feature. DO NOT scan your computer with Ewido yet.

Shifty, post #5 was done after I updated ewido, went to safe mode, scanned the system, and another hijack. Something I'm failing to do? Thanks.

Nope. Apparently, Ewido sold their product to AVG, so ... it looks like you did everything right, I was just misinformed. SORRY :(

Okay, so...let's get this done the old fashioned way, then.

Open Hijackthis. Choose 'Scan only'. Put a checkmark next to all of these items before clicking "fix" button:

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {549B5CA7-4A86-11D7-A4DF-000874180BB3} - (no file)

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [EarthLink Installer] " /C

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [MSConfig] C:\WINDOWS\PCHealth\HelpCtr\Binaries\MSConfig.exe /auto

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [MoneyAgent] "c:\Program Files\Microsoft Money\System\mnyexpr.exe"

O4 - Startup: Yahoo! Widget Engine.lnk = C:\Program Files\Yahoo!\Yahoo! Widget Engine\YahooWidgetEngine.exe

O4 - Global Startup: Adobe Gamma Loader.lnk = ?

O4 - Global Startup: Adobe Reader Speed Launch.lnk = C:\Program Files\Adobe\Acrobat 7.0\Reader\reader_sl.exe

O21 - SSODL: flammei - {9d635a36-6b3c-4146-8625-f3aaf507bbf8} - (no file)

After you checkmark them all, then click Fix, please reboot.

After rebooting, please open Hijackthis again and choose "scan only" yet again.

Please look at the bold list above and make sure none of the items have returned. This item is incredibly nasty (SmitFraud) and might come back: O21 - SSODL: flammei - {9d635a36-6b3c-4146-8625-f3aaf507bbf8} - (no file)

If nothing has returned, please "scan and save logfile" again with Hijackthis and post a new log for me. Thanks!

Line 21 was "Smitfraud" aka "SpySherrif":

http://www.castlecops.com/o22list-51.html

More info is there, sort of. If you go to Google.com and search for "Smitfraud" you will get literally almost a half a million results back about it - it is VERY nasty, and it looks like you were one of the lucky ones who weren't badly infected.

Read more about this nasty infection here:

Would you like to do some additional cleanup on your system while we're at it? I can probably tell you some other items we can remove, but ... I would only like to do this if your computer is still acting stupid :)

Sounds good Shifty whenever you get the chance. Once again thanks.

Most of the following items are safe to remove - please look carefully at the notes under each bold group of lines to see what the purpose of the lines are - I'll let you decide if you want to remove it based on that info, there may be some items you want to keep:

O2 - BHO: UberButton Class - {5BAB4B5B-68BC-4B02-94D6-2FC0DE4A7897} - C:\Program Files\Yahoo!\Common\yiesrvc.dll
O2 - BHO: YahooTaggedBM Class - {65D886A2-7CA7-479B-BB95-14D1EFB7946A} - C:\Program Files\Yahoo!\Common\YIeTagBm.dll

O3 - Toolbar: Yahoo! Toolbar - {EF99BD32-C1FB-11D2-892F-0090271D4F88} - C:\Program Files\Yahoo!\Companion\Installs\cpn0\yt.dll

NOTE: These three items are for the Yahoo! Toolbar and are not required. You can probably use uninstall this using "add/Remove Programs" feature in the Windows Control Panel, it should also remove them. You can just remove them here also, but it only stops Yahoo! toolbar from running, and it doesn't really uninstall it. If you remove these, reinstalling the Yahoo toolbar will fix it and make it run again. I would remove them.

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [AGRSMMSG] AGRSMMSG.exe
NOTE: This is a non-required file to control your dialup modem. If you are not using a dialup connection, feel free to nuke it.

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [UpdateManager] "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Sonic\Update Manager\sgtray.exe" /r
NOTE: This is non-essential. It just provides a reminder to backup or update your files.

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [LogitechVideoRepair] C:\Program Files\Logitech\Video\ISStart.exe

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [LogitechSoftwareUpdate] "C:\Program Files\Logitech\Video\ManifestEngine.exe" boot
NOTE: The first item (ISStart.exe) offers additional support for images and video streaming output for your Logitech webcam, it's only required if you think you will use special webcam features. The second item (ManifestEngine.exe) is an autoupdate service - it will automatically go online and look for logitech updates and I assume it will notify you if they are found. Both are technically optional and should not screw anything up if removed. If you find the webcam is not working properly after removal, simply reinstall the software that came with the webcam and you're back to normal again. :)

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [HP Component Manager] "C:\Program Files\HP\hpcoretech\hpcmpmgr.exe"
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [HPHUPD05] c:\Program Files\HP\{45B6180B-DCAB-4093-8EE8-6164457517F0}\hphupd05.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [HPHmon05] C:\WINDOWS\system32\hphmon05.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [eabconfg.cpl] C:\Program Files\HPQ\Quick Launch Buttons\EabServr.exe /Start
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Cpqset] C:\Program Files\HPQ\Default Settings\cpqset.exe

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [HP Software Update] "C:\Program Files\HP\HP Software Update\HPWuSchd.exe"

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Share-to-Web Namespace Daemon] C:\Program Files\HP\HP Share-to-Web\hpgs2wnd.exe
NOTES: I'm breaking these out on a per-line basis, because all of these items are stupid crap that HP installs on boot. HP is notorious for bloating their computers with crap like this, but only some of it is necessary.

1) hpcmpmgr.exe - "HP Component Manager" starts up all software related to your HP computer's multimedia products. This would control various multimedia crap. Remove it and you may lose some multimedia functions of your computer.
2) hphupd05.exe - HP Photosmart Updater. Updates the Photosmart software. Technically not required. I would remove it if it was my computer, but I'm just that kind of guy.
3) hphmon05.exe - This starts up HP Photosmart at Windows startup, and it provides easy access to flash card reading functions for your digital camera or for multimedia reading, such as reading CF or SD cards from your printer. Not required, but if you use a card reader much, I would keep it intact.
4) EabServr.exe - This starts up the utility which controls the "Easy Access Buttons" control panel on your laptop. This process is required for the Easy Access keys to work - if you don't use the 'easy access' keys, it is not required. Usually these items are special keys around the laptop that will instantly open email, open a web browser, etc. Only required if you use the keys.
5) cpqset.exe - This is partially related to #1 note a couple notes up. It allows for configuration of multimedia devices on the computer. If you removed #1 item (hpcmpmgr.exe), you might as well remove this one too.
6) HPWuSchd.exe - Hewlett Packard Software Update Scheduler... this displays update information regarding HP's range of products and updates for your laptop software, possibly the drivers. If your computer is running stable, I would say it's OK to remove it, but ... you won't get any software updates from HP anymore. Most people don't install the updates even when they arrive and find this service to be really annoying.
7) hpgs2wnd.exe - This starts up Hewlett-Packard's Share-to-web software at bootup/Windows startup. This application allows a user to share photos to a secure Internet site - if you do not use this service and don't think you will use it, then this item is not required. I believe it only allows you to upload photos to a secure HP website, and not other internet websites...so ... I'll let you decide.

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Windows Defender] "C:\Program Files\Windows Defender\MSASCui.exe" -hide
NOTE: Windows Anti-spyware. I honestly think that AVG Antispyware does a better job. I would recommend to remove this item in most cases, including yours. Let AVG do the job for you and only open this program using the Start menu when you need to.

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [nwiz] nwiz.exe /install
NOTE: This is for your video card - it's a little 'wizard' utility to help configure your computer for multiple monitors and a few other features. If you only have one monitor or won't use advanced configurations and features of your video card, obviously it's not required.

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [updateMgr] C:\Program Files\Adobe\Acrobat 7.0\Reader\AdobeUpdateManager.exe AcRdB7_0_5 -reboot 1
NOTE: If this exists after a reboot, it is not required. Feel free to remove it.

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Weather] C:\Program Files\AWS\WeatherBug\Weather.exe 1
NOTE: This item is only required if you want the "WeatherBug" software to run in the taskbar and/or to load at Windows startup.

O14 - IERESET.INF: START_PAGE_URL=http://ie.redirect.hp.com/svs/rdr?TYPE=3&tp=iehome&locale=EN_US&c=Q304&bd=pavilion&pf=laptop
NOTE: Not required.
