I tried to load some Canon digital camera software on my computer & the CD drive will not read it.It reads other CD's fine (music & data) I also tried a different CD of the same software (2 kids 2 cameras) Both CD's worked on my daughters laptop fine, they just will not work on my desktop. When I put it in it will not auto read & when I go to my computer & click on D: drive it says no disk inserted(it is) I seem to remember it taking a REAL long time to burn a CD awhile back.I had to slow the burn speed down to the slowest setting before it would burn.Could my burner be going tits up?(kinda hope it is so I have to buy a DVD burner) Any ideas anone?

May be a dumb comment, but is the disc a DVD and not a CD?

Not a dumb comment at all. That may be why my daughters laptop will read it(she has a DVD burner) Now for a TRULY dumb question....How do I tell if it's a CD or DVD?
I just noticed it says "compact disc" at the bottom.

It sounds like it is a CD from the label. Is it a Mini CD or normal size CD. I have seen some machines have problems with the little ones, but work fine on the larger ones.

Since you are reading other CD's fine I'd hate to recommend buying another burner just to see if that is the problem.

Is your machine and the laptop both running Windows XP?

It's a normal size CD. Both the desktop & laptop are running XP home.

I finally got the time to fiddle with this some more. The CD works in my other desktop's CD drive. I tried to burn a CD in the Dell & it was not working,so I am going to assume it's the drive. Can anyone recomend a DVD burner? I was looking at this sony on newegg. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16827131039

My daughter has a Sony in her desktop. We had a bit of a problem with it 3 months after buying it (it quit burning...did everything else fine) but Sony. It took a couple phone calls, but Sony replaced it for free. I don't remember what model it was I put in there, but I would recommend a Sony just because of the support I got from them.

I only buy NEC drives at this point.

Pick a drive, any drive :D Sony and Pioneer are OK when it comes to optical drives, but lots of friends I know who are DVD-download-and-burn pirate kinda guys have been having reliability with their Pioneer drives as of late.

This probably wont help but, I had all sorts of trouble getting my digital camera software to work & realized I could just plug the camera directly into the computers USB port & use it like a drive. It works soooo much better than the software did.
