It was working and then stopped working and now I can't get it to work for the life of me.

I have a 71 GMC C15.

I took off the steering wheel and pulled the hub off the steering shaft. I then took off the plastic horn contact assembly and made sure all my connections were right. I checked the continuity of the entire setup by putting one lead on the horn contact inside the steering column and the other lead on the wire that connects to the retainer contactor ring and I had perfect continuity.

Another thing I did was try to check for voltage by putting one lead on the horn contact and the other lead on a ground and I didn't get a reading at all. It's my understanding that the horn is a live and just doesn't get grounded until you hit that horn button. I'm guessing my problem has something to do with that.

Any ideas what's going on here?

I'm just home on vacation and I have to go back to school on the 4th. This is what I came home to so I'm trying to fix it before I leave so my parents will be able to get the thing through inspection when the time comes. I appreciate the help.

unplug the relay under the dash.
the black wire should have ground when you pres the button on the wheel
the red wire should be hot all the time
the green wire should honk the horns when you put 12 volts to it.

I'll give that a shot, thanks.

Everything checked out perfect and I got the horn to honk. Must be the relay.

I really appreciate the help!

Update: I just called checker auto and that darn relay is 20 bucks  . At least it will be fixed.

I'll bet it is 5 bucks at the junk yard... and this is only like the second one I have heard of going bad.

I just checked online cause I thought that part sounded way too expensive and sure enough the guy got me the wrong part. There are two listed in Checkers database. One is a 3 prong 2 HOLE(for the mounting bracket) and the other is the 3 prong 2 SCREW. The 2 screw is the expensive one, the regular one is only 5 bucks.

That's much more reasonable.
