View Full Version : Thrash 2007: Will I drive it to the board meet?
Alvin 12-20-2007, 10:01 AM Maybe I'm reading this wrong, but you do know the later rears are longer/wider right?
hahaha, oops. :o Guess I don't know my stuff after all. I had remembered it the other way around! Hrmm.. guess I'll have to cut on the bedsides instead (*edit* or measure my axle and see if it's 71-72 already), especially when the rear discs go on. The "hats" on the rotors are thicker than the drums (I think I might need longer wheel studs actually), which pushes the tire out further, if ever so slightly. The joys of off-the-shelf wheels with only one backspacing available! :)
SCOTI 12-20-2007, 10:59 AM Adam..... Share the specs on the wheels/tires. They look great! Maybe I'll try that 'reverse bait & switch' & get some discounted wheels for myself  .

The wheels are American Racing Torq-thrust Originals. 17x8 4.5" backspacing on all four corners. Front tires are 255/50/17, rears are 275/60/17. They're some kind of Kumho tire that was cheap;).
It looks a little funny with the front wheels pulled in from the fender so far and the rear wheels right up against the bedside, but for the money I won't complain. And it might look better out in the sunlight where I can get more than a few feet away and take it all in.
Yeah, I got a great deal. There's no way I would've been able to afford these otherwise. It wound up I paid approx. $140/wheel shipped. The luck ran my way this time around! :metal:
Im surprised the fronts are pulled in. I thought when you put a disk brake conversion on 67/68 it actually widened the front track.

It does.
Alvin 12-20-2007, 03:40 PM Ok, at any rate, I measured my axle (best as I could) on Ethel tonight. Considering I got over 57" backing plate to backing plate (it was hard to read it lying on my back under my aired out truck), I'm thinking I have the 71-72 (wider) axle under there right now. Once I can get her outside and get some help measuring I'll know for sure.
And the fronts aren't pulled in all that far really, just looks that way compared to the rear. My front wheels and tires are the same as member "see ten", so you can see his truck for how they look on a static-dropped truck.

Adam,
If that is the rear end that came with Ethel, it came from a 72 (or so the guy I bought it from told me) at any rate that might help with your answer.
Alvin 12-20-2007, 05:39 PM Thanks Keith! At least my suspicions were correct, I have the wider axle. I'll do some measuring once the bed is bolted down and hopefully 3/4" on each side will remedy the problem.
Alvin 12-21-2007, 03:31 PM My eBay camaro calipers showed up today. They sure look like a mess.

Hey those look great. Hmmm and the pictures look familiar. I must have seen em somewhere on here. Im drawing a blank...Seems to be happening more and more:crazy:
Alvin 01-09-2008, 04:27 PM I didn't get anything done over the holidays. But today was nice and warm! So I grabbed a rear rotor off the shelf and decided to copy Frizzle Fry and paint it up.

Spray-Bomb 01-09-2008, 05:00 PM Sweeet bro !!!
You HAVE to get this thing to the board meet THIS year bro !!!
Alvin 01-09-2008, 05:23 PM Sweeet bro !!!
You HAVE to get this thing to the board meet THIS year bro !!!
I know! That's the plan. Selling my extra bed this weekend and all that dough will go right back into this truck to get 'er on the road. First stop: cooling system. Second stop: fuel system (couple lines left to run). Once it's running decent I'll install the air ride valves, comp and tank. Then it's brakes, driveshaft, exhaust, shift linkage... Hopefully I'll have time leftover to do some smaller things and get some sort of interior in it. One way or another.. it's gonna happen.
:burnout:
Spray-Bomb 01-09-2008, 05:31 PM Yeah, well it'd be nice to get to drive it a lil bit before the meet lol
I can't remember how many days I had driven my truck before the meet, but it wasn't much lol
huero 01-09-2008, 06:35 PM Alvin get back to work. I want to see pics of that truck out on the road. :metal: Bitchin truck!!!
Alvin 01-10-2008, 02:49 PM Not much new tonight. I got the other rear brake rotor painted.
http://newt0.com/simplegal/galleries/Ethel/IMG_8863_sized.jpg (http://newt0.com/simplegal/galleries/Ethel/IMG_8863.jpg)
And a look at how Ethel sits right now:
http://newt0.com/simplegal/galleries/Ethel/IMG_8844_sized.jpg (http://newt0.com/simplegal/galleries/Ethel/IMG_8844.jpg)
In somewhat exciting news, a friend at work has a milling machine and would like to prototype some billet aluminum hose clamps off of my truck. With ordering the water neck and hoses this weekend, hopefully I'll have the clamps before spring gets here!
Alvin 01-30-2008, 10:29 AM Well I started laying out my gauges on the bezel to see how they'd all fit. Now if I could just figure out the best way to cut on that expensive piece of plastic!
http://newt0.com/simplegal/galleries/Ethel/IMG_8952_sized.jpg (http://newt0.com/simplegal/galleries/Ethel/IMG_8952.jpg)
Here are the gauges, Stewart Warner Power Series. When I saw they were available with the light blue ring in the center I had to have them.
http://newt0.com/simplegal/galleries/Ethel/IMG_8959-1_sized.jpg (http://newt0.com/simplegal/galleries/Ethel/IMG_8959-1.jpg)
Bought a sandblasting cabinet this past weekend and have cleaned off quite a few parts with it (the glass broke on it tonight... guess I have to work on it now too). Remember those nasty brake calipers from a few posts up? I took one apart and threw it in the blasting cabinet to see how well it cleaned up.
http://newt0.com/simplegal/galleries/Ethel/IMG_9074_sized.jpg (http://newt0.com/simplegal/galleries/Ethel/IMG_9074.jpg)
http://newt0.com/simplegal/galleries/Ethel/IMG_9075_sized.jpg (http://newt0.com/simplegal/galleries/Ethel/IMG_9075.jpg)
Now if the weather would break I could spray some paint!
Also got a bunch of new parts in the mail. Radiator mounts and hoses, caliper rebuild kits, rear caliper hoses, and e-brake cables.
Spray-Bomb 01-30-2008, 09:16 PM Sweeeeeeet !!!!!!

I know! I can't wait for you to see her! This thread should be Thrash 2008 now!
coming along great
Thanks, I'm pretty happy with the work so far. Just doesn't feel like I'm moving fast enough right now.
SactoJim 01-31-2008, 04:43 AM Love those wheels!
Big J 02-02-2008, 12:47 AM Lookin' good man. Its all got to be done so even the smallest amount of progress is sweet:metal:. Keep on it. I got the doors cut down. It was a hard thing to do but they turned out nice.....
Alvin 02-04-2008, 01:23 PM No real progress to take pics of, I've just been sandblasting parts right and left trying to get as much stuff done as possible. Whenever a good day for painting gets here, I'll be more than ready. It was in the mid-40's today, so I pulled Ethel out into the sun and for once could get some decent pics.

Alvin 02-04-2008, 02:02 PM Thanks for the compliments guys. I'm trying to get her road-worthy ASAP, but money is tight this month and I'm outta town for 2 weeks next month. Somehow, some way, it's gonna get done.

tdave00 02-09-2008, 12:59 PM What's the center LCD for?
Looks nice.
Alvin 02-09-2008, 09:23 PM Thanks guys!
I'm really happy with the 17s. I never get tired of looking at it! :)
The center LCD will display the air pressures for each bag and the tank pressure. It's also programmable to flash the numbers if they drop below a set psi. It is available through Dakota Digital.
LOW DOUGH 02-09-2008, 10:26 PM I like the gauges and that display. Great!
68chevy68 02-10-2008, 10:15 AM You should check with Jacobs carter burgess for a drafting position.
Spray-Bomb 03-05-2008, 04:58 AM Progress ???
Alvin 03-05-2008, 05:20 AM Progress ???
Shhh!
Umm.. I painted a bunch of parts this past weekend. That's about it.
And as of Friday I'll be outta town for two weeks! :waah:
BUT my garage is shaping up quite nicely, and maybe it will actually be warm by the time I get back in town. ;)
April is going to be quite interesting and busy. :mm:
jott_06 03-05-2008, 05:39 AM I just realized i live very close to you. Probably within a half hour.

kyull67 03-06-2008, 09:22 PM Those gauges are NICE! What are they?
Alvin 03-07-2008, 01:32 AM Those gauges are NICE! What are they?
Stewart Warner Power Series. They are available with the light blue, red, or silver rings in the centers. Summit Racing is where I got mine.
BACKYARD88 03-07-2008, 01:39 AM Looking good Adam!
SOON2BLAZE 04-24-2008, 08:15 PM any progress on Ethel?
Alvin 04-25-2008, 03:37 PM Not gonna report in just yet. Found out I have to take another look at my cab mount bushings, seems the front of the cab is too low.
Frizzle Fry 04-25-2008, 06:15 PM She's looking sweet Alvin! Those brakes look good behind your wheels. I think the 17's fit the truck really well with that paint scheme, trim, and drop. You going with round mirrors?

How'd you know?
I've got a pair of well worn round mirrors featuring un-broken glass that will go on as soon as I cut the broken rectangle ones off there.
And thanks, I'm trying to get back in the groove of working on her, I got a little distracted and bought a bmw
Spray-Bomb 09-14-2008, 09:19 PM So are you selling it yet
thirdstreettito 09-14-2008, 09:33 PM What are the wheel/tire specs for the TT's?
Alvin 09-19-2008, 10:33 AM So are you selling it yet
OUCH!
That hurt!
I had thought about it. I'm moving to Vegas next month and could use the money, plus selling it would make the move easier. BUT I decided not to. She will be tagging along. Probably will take another year or three before I get back to her though.
Alvin 09-19-2008, 10:39 AM What are the wheel/tire specs for the TT's?
17x8 with 4.5in backspacing all the way around
front tires: 255/50/17
rear tires: 275/60/17
The tires are a little too wide on the back, so I have a "narrow" axle (1.5" shorter overall) so the outward facing sidewall won't rub on the bedsides.
Spray-Bomb 09-19-2008, 10:40 AM Well, I'm sure but I have feeling that she would rather live where its warm anyway
Hope the move goes well bro... you still have the S-10 ???
SCOTI 09-19-2008, 11:55 AM So are you selling it yet
Let me get this straight . ..... You're calling him out about the status of a project?
At least he's still 'not working' on the same one ;) .
:lol::lol::lol::lol::lol::lol::lol::lol:
Alvin 09-19-2008, 12:50 PM Well, I'm sure but I have feeling that she would rather live where its warm anyway

Yeah, still have the S-10.. now THAT is the one I'm selling. If I could just get somebody interested in it!

Oh man, is it just me or is it getting hot in here? :sumo: :smoke:
I did wash Ethel the other night... felt I owed it to her to rinse off 5 months worth of dust!
Spray-Bomb 09-19-2008, 02:23 PM Dude, you are just digging yourself a bigger hole
