I'm having a problem with fans I take it they are on the way out. They sound pretty bad. The CPU fan is about 5 years old or so I think. Its for a 2.0 GHz Intel Celeron. I did find a fan for it but I'm not sure if there is one fan type better than another. This one is a ball bearing CPU fan. I'm not sure if there is something better than this or if this is the cheap one (not as good as some others). It looks exactly like the one I have. http://cgi.ebay.com/Intel-Socket-478-Ball-Bearing-CPU-Fan-Heatsink-to_W0QQitemZ300067144677QQihZ020QQcategoryZ14293QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem?hash=item30006 7144677

I recently bought a PNY FX5500 PCI video card and the fan is acting the same way. Really noisy and very very annoying. I took that video card out and replaced with the stock integrated sound/ video card. I still have the pny and would like to get another fan for it. I have seen one that is a universal one but its like 20.00. http://www.microcenter.com/byos/byos_single_product_results.phtml?product_id=253011

Is there any way to get one cheaper than that? It may sound odd but my system had better performance with the aftermarket video card all around. Its going to be to much hassle to return it to the factory for replacement. Its held on with two small screws and is circular. Video would be nice but I need to get a cpu fan more. I can tap on the fan and it will help with the noise but its a short term fix.

Shop around at newegg.com and see what you can find.

For the CPU fan, yes, normally you can get a whole new heatsink and fan for less than $10. Video card fan replacement should be equally cheap. There is a company called "Manhattan" that makes replacement fans.

Ball bearing fans will suffice. 5 years is a lot of life out of a fan, period.

With regard to the video card, Isn't the 5500 a little ancient? Might be more cost effective to upgrade. If it's not a fast system, I guess there's no point, but ...

The whole system is a little older emachines t2042. I thought I could get some more time out of it with these fans and be okay. I don't have enough to get a new system even a pretty cheap one 400-500 basic system. I have to get pci video cards and I take it those aren't that great. I like the pny fx5500 its way better than what I had. Just the fan started acting up few months after it was installed. The computer system I have isn't that slow but anything new is going to be a ton better. I can live with it until I get a new one.

I also kept the dust build up out of the case and power supply by blowing it out regularly.

PCI video cards are not that great, but no worse than an AGP card to be honest. If you need one, let me know what version of Windows you're running and I could send you one. But you could probably get a replacement fan for your 5500 for the same price the shipping I'd want you to reimburse me for ...

Odd questions, but:

* Can you take a picture of the 5500 so I know what you're dealing with?
* If the GPU fan is square, can you measure the thickness of it and the width in millimeters?
* Can you do the same measurement for your CPU fan?
* Is there a motherboard manufacturer name and model # silkscreened into the motherboard?

I can take a picture of the video card and of the gpu fan. I can do the same for the cpu fan and mother board. I would need to know where to look to get what you want. Here is where that dial caliper comes in handy

Man, I've been wanting a caliper for a looong time. I need to go get me one of them.
