View Full Version : free firewall for 98? corn 01-09-2007, 07:58 PM Where can I get a good freebie firewall download for win 98? Thanks... shifty 01-09-2007, 11:08 PM http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/showthread.php?t=195287 Three of them listed in there. Lots of good info too. corn 01-09-2007, 11:28 PM Thanks Shifty. I tried the first one on the list but it was xp only. Ill check out the rest of that link. Thanks again.... shifty 01-09-2007, 11:41 PM Yeah, that first one - Outpost - the Professional version says it only requires Windows 98 - maybe the Free one only supports later. If so - that's my bad. I assume they gave up on supporting Win98 since Microsoft no longer supports or releases security patches for Win98/ME. No point in trying to manufacture security software like a firewall for a version of Windows that will never get another security update...and is ten times more likely to be widely targetted by hackers. corn 01-09-2007, 11:54 PM Zone Alarm was xp-only but Ill check into the Outpost. barn9 01-10-2007, 11:51 AM Not that I am an expert on the matter, but I would suggest you get rid of 98 and update to an OS that is supported. Get XP and you will never miss 98 IMHO. shifty 01-10-2007, 12:45 PM :agree: At least get a product that Microsoft still supports and provides security updates for. By running Windows 98 on your machine, you're basically in a situation of "when I get hacked", not "if I get hacked". corn 01-10-2007, 06:58 PM Im probably going to spring for a new computer for her soon. This is just to get her by, but I agree completely... shifty 01-10-2007, 09:59 PM I remember ;) http://download.zonelabs.com/bin/free/information/znalm/zaReleaseHistory.html Scroll down to the 4.5 branch (download v 4.5.594.000). It should install on Win98 system with no problems. Please be aware it's a very basic firewall, but will do its job. |
