View Full Version : Tutorial: Simple Color Change
1. Picture 1 - Starting photo. It's kind of dark but it will do for this. I also already selected the area I want to change with the Lasso tool
2. Picture 2 - I have copied and pasted the selection in a new layer. I also turned offed the bottom layer so you could see what was copied. Do this by clickin the "eye" on the layer in the layers window.
3. Picture 3 - Select the layer you just pasted by clicking on it. Now go up to "image" then to "Adjustments" then down to "Hue/Saturation"
4. Picture 4 and 5 - Here you will have 3 slider bars and 2 check boxes. Select the "Colorize" box and you see you image change to a shade of the color that is on you color selection box. This does not matter. Move the "Hue" bar side to side and you see the colors change. Also more the "Saturation" and you see the saturation or amount of color change. Move the "lightness" bar and you she the brightness change. Once you get the desired color you want you're set. Click "ok"
5. Picture 6 - Now select and delete or erase the area you want to stay the original colors. Notice I did not erase the color over the chrome cowl area, just for reference. The original colors will be on the layer below.
Picture 7 shows erased areas and picture 8 is just another color.
cstanley 01-10-2007, 12:32 PM Awesome Tutorial...
Very Helpful
bw4sale 01-10-2007, 01:14 PM Thanks for this. This is one part of chopping I am not that good at...yet.
nick-melo 01-10-2007, 06:00 PM thanks good tutorial
Good info.
Another tidbit... you may need to adjust the Tolerance value on the Lasso to capture the correct things. On a vehicle with direct sunlight and shade, you might find it only capturing parts of the truck. Once lasso'd, you can also Expand the selection by 1 pixel to eliminate that off-color edge you sometimes see on color changes.
Low72 01-10-2007, 08:45 PM How do you get such straight lines with the lasso?:whine:
19GMC63 01-10-2007, 10:51 PM magnetic lasso works well.
Ive never mastered the lasso tool. It drives me crazy. Nice tutorial Zumo.
Thanks guys. It's not a perfect example but basic enough to where most can understand. Just practice, practice and more practice. You'll get it.
smoked68 01-11-2007, 09:27 AM using gimp software is there a lasso tool and if not what do I use to do that?

Hey smoked, The third tool from the left on top is you're lasso, I can't trace a straight line so I lasso it a little bigger than what I want and after I copy and paste new layer I go back with eraser and get the line closer to where I want it. Probably not the fastest way but seams to work for me (sorta)
desertrat 01-11-2007, 10:02 AM What does everyone recommend for a good mouse? Mine I have to bang on the pad every 30 sec. so it's time for a new one. I'm not a computer guy but is the wireless mouse any good for this stuff?

I'm still stuck on pshop 5 (because I can't afford to shell out $500+ every time those bozos come out with a new version... BTW, CS3 beta is available to all you CS2 folks). The lasso tool in 5 is VERY unsophisticated in its capability. It's sometimes just a matter of doing a rough lasso of what you want, then using shift+ (add) or alt+ (remove) to clean it up a little. Then follow up with the Smooth function at 2 pixels or more per application. What takes the CS2 folks 2 seconds can take me 5 minutes in pshop 5 :(
I use Gimp 2.2 at work (current stable release)... I would describe it as similar to Pshop 5 in sophistication.
19GMC63 01-11-2007, 04:11 PM luckily for me, I use the school computers. (I do photo editing for journalism/yearbook) Most have pshop7, but with 256mb of ram  . but the one I use in journalism has CS2, and 512mb of ram. :)
My home computer has gimp and paint.NET. I can't really stand to use them anymore.
jkade 01-11-2007, 09:32 PM Reckon what would happen if you downloaded the photoshop software from a program like limewire or Imesh and it had the product code for it also, that means it would be free. I wonder if anyone has done this?;) I am not saying that I did that or that I would do something like that by any means or trying to tell anyone to do it.
kombreeze 01-11-2007, 10:19 PM Thanks for the tutorial a lot of great info on the basics....much needed here.
pimperout 01-11-2007, 11:48 PM thanks that helps alot and answers many questions good job
Reckon what would happen if you downloaded the photoshop
I'm sure you didn't do that, but for those thinking of doing so, remember that pirating software is illegal. In addition, it's unethical... people put food on their tables at home because of the hard work they put into writing software. When someone chooses to use the software without paying for it, it's not much different than just robbing them of their wallets. If you want to use the product, buy it. If you can't afford it, buy an older version (I use pshop 5!!!! it's ancient, but I paid $500+ for it when it was new, and I've gotten 10 years of use out of it). If you really can't afford it at all, use GIMP. It's freeware under the GNU license, and the people who contribute to it have consented to your unlimited personal use, so it's not stealing.
I, and a few others on this board that I know of, who make our livings from selling code will appreciate your doing so.
Wow. XXL gettin' all serious on us. But he's right.

Sorry... meant to include the following ;-)
There we go. Now you're back on track.
Blaz-air 01-13-2007, 08:34 AM Thank you XXL..... nuff said
Blaz-air 01-13-2007, 09:45 AM Ok I am going to give out a little of my secrets.... They are called layer mask and they are THE secret to Photoshop. On the layers pallet at the bottom (where the layers trash can is) there is an icon that is a rectangle with a hole in it. This is your new best friend. See with the lasso tool it a DESTRUCTIVE way of editing. You lasso something and the hit delete. With the layer mask, you edit a gray scale MASK. Where the mask is black nothing will show and where it is white it will show. If you make you mask the wrong shape just use the brush tool and paint away. Then just place an adjustment layer above that and change colors?????? There is more but that will be for a later time.

I have even more trouble trying to use masks than I do with the lasso tools. When I need to make selections I use the pen tools. I guess I really should practice with more of the tools photoshop offers. I only use it as a hobby, Im not in the graphics business.
Blaz-air 01-13-2007, 10:14 AM Well its like everything else out there, there are more than one way to accomplish a given task. I also use the pen, but I find mayself using the brush tool while holding the shift key and CLICKing my life away. The shift key gives you a straight line between points. You would be surprised at how nice a curve you can make with a bunch of small striaght lines!
