I am looking at installing extra lights on my front bumper of my 2004 2500HD and am looking for some information on driving lights vs fog lights.

I am not looking at yellow fog lights but clear lights and I am more concerned about the spray pattern of light.

The attached diagram shows the difference between the spray pattern of the lights.

I am looking for lights that will light up the area in front of me while driving on quiet, untravelled roads, and I have concerns about animals (Bears, bison, moose, dear and ?) in the ditch.

I like the driving lights for the distance but I am afraid that they will not light up the ditches and show me animals.

Any experience here as to how much difference there is in the distance between the two types of lights?

Also how many watts should I be looking for? THe lights I am looking at are Piaa 510's.

I've had many sets of fog lights, and IMO, the hardly did anything at all.

If you wanted to run 2 sets, you could run inner driving lights with outer fogs. Or with one pair you could angle either fog or driving slightly out to light up the ditches. They just wouldn't be exactly legal for city driving, which isn't what you want to use them for, so it doesn't matter.

Good luck and put some finished pics up.

I really don't want to run two sets.

I am now looking at Piaa 4000 series. The P-4000 Quattro is a multi-function light designed primarily for trucks and SUVs. It has two large main beams, both with over-sized reflectors and two marker bulbs stacked vertically in the center of the lamp.

Piaa makes a kit that I can replace my factory fog lights with the Piaa 4000's and keep the truck nice and clean.

You could be lucky and have the 4000 series combine driving and fog. Or just aim the entire light slightly outward to light up the ditch.

I had driving lights on my 70 for a while and they didn't do too well, but they did light up objects around the road slightly.
