YEEEEEEEEEEES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

YouTube - The CST/10, new headers, full exhaust, audio only

Left the camera at home, so the audio is off my cell phone.. Bare with the poor quality.

The truck sounds like a BEAST, open headers is a dream... But now the truck breathes through a set of dual 2 and 1/4 inch exhausts, and through a pair of mystery turbo muffles.. The truck sounds great, nice, rumbling idle, but with a great bark when you get on the gas.. so to speak. The closest thing I can say to the sound of this truck, is Christine, from Stephen King's movie, Christine: YouTube - Christine - Final Battle Scene

Thanks guys! Its a beast. Can't wait to get back over, and play with it more  love hearing it run now.

Next up is to jack the engine up, and move the trans cooler lines. We accidently routed them through the frame-motor-mount, and they hit the headers. Then a set of 90* spark plug boots. And, top off the tranny fluid. Then, gotta figure some sort of fan/shroud idea. Check and clean the gas tank, and may be able to get a test drive with in a month or so.

Also going to try my best to make it to the houston meet.

Got some work today, good and bad news.

The good, got just about everything but the trans-cooler lines cleared of the headers, and the spark plug wires done.

With the pipes dumping right behind the tires, burnouts are gonna look sweet with the smoke being blown outwards by the exhaust

Also, thanks to another Cadillac Freebie, got a clock that fits in the extra gauge hole in the cluster (from the factory, it was an option for a vacuum gauge).

Bad news is, one of the spark plugs decided to break. So no firing today. Maybe tomorrow. :bigwink:

Strange...you have a Dana rear axle under there! If it is a 6-lug semi-floater it is probably a Dana 44. Not sure if you knew or not, but they are pretty rare underneath 1/2 ton trucks. Not any better or worse than a 12-bolt really, but more rare as a rear axle in a Chevy truck. Nice progress too, BTW.

texanidiot25
02-25-2008, 07:59 AM
Nope, it's a Dana 60 (back a page I think I have the pic of the ID stamp). Rare, yes.. But these trucks were so varied, I'm not surprised (but happy it's near bullet proof, lol). Like the other guy on here who just found out his truck has a powerglide trans.

Got the clock installed

Your truck is looking great, Looks to me like you have a totally soid truck that you can keep for a long time.

Just a small piece of advice, I put togeahter a 70 short bed when I was in highschool, it was a really rad truck, Black, 4x4, and not a day goes by that I dont miss that thing, I would highly sugjest that you never sell your truck, you have a totally soild nice old chevy on your hands. Treat it right and it will serve you well for years and years to come.

And on that note, since you have it all put togeather, you going to make it to Austin on the 5th? ;)

Thanks :)

I don't plan on selling this til it either rusts back into the earth, or my cold dead hands (or maybe just put my casket in the bed, and burry the whole truck 6-feet-under ). I've watched my dad have to sell off his two high-school mean machines ('74 Camaro, a real beast, walked all over trailered cars at the strip, and drove home. And his '78 El Camino, was JUST about to get a TPI 350 built to around 400hp, 700R4, etc, then a guy hit-and-ran, totalling it while parked) and I still miss them so much, grew up with them.

Couldn't let this one get away.

March 5th? Unless I can come up with enough money for a power steering pump, shoulder belts, and disks brakes ASAP, it's not ready for the road. Just what I need til' my dad will let this thing on the road for more then a (soon) trip around the block.

Care to donate? lol

Are you hitting up the houston meet?

It will actually be april 5th, and as far as the 2nd goes, I am not sure if I am going to make it or not, I did the math and I will be looking at spending about 150.00 on gas, so we will see at the end of the week. It really depends on how much I get paid on friday because I still have to get mine registered and all that jazz.

Beautiful! You've done quite a lot already and the work is paying off. I like the name. "Orange Crush" fits. I have a 1970 CST that I found in California, which has been dubbed "Sweet Pea." She is show on the New Members page under New Member.

Just a bit of an update anticipating to better future ones.

-Been working on wiring. Added a fuse block right off the battery. Uses modern Maxi-fuses. The original positive to the truck runs off this. Then other accesories, and the 2ndary fuse block we add (keeping new wiring separate from original is the goal) is ran off this too. Re-wiring the truck to use the newer style alternators. Tomorrow I might get onto re-doing the fuel lines. Then, maybe find an excuse to drive the truck to the gas station to fill the whole thing up, after checking the tank for leaks and rust.

As shown in the other thread, finished off the final bit of engine detail, the air cleaner:

Today:

Got an early start, and dropped down the starter and fabbed up some heat shields for the starter and solenoid (protects them from the heat off the headers).

Got a fan shroud from my dad's friend (trading for the fuelpump that came with the truck), and it'll fit with some cutting and trimming.

And oh the joys of the fuel system. To clean out the gas tank, we put in about 3 gallons. At the bottom of the tank, the fuel line ran to a pot to collect the dirty gas. Then at the top, my dad used the leaf blower to start the flow of fuel (siphon effect) by blowing air down the filler neck. Problem was, once the fuel started flowing, the siphon effect didn't stop, and gas kept going. Brown, dirty, stinky, gas! So anyways, I plug the fuel line with my finger (after it has already overflown the pot with dirty gas), and my dad goes off to get a bolt to plug the fuel line. Nothing like getting soaked in dirty gasoline So anyways, plug off the line, change shirts, and went onto cleaning out the hard lines. Clammed the gas tank line, and ran the new rubber line to the hard fuel line (runs the length of the frame rails).

Started it up, and now the truck runs entirely on it's own gas!

Also rebuilt the alternator with another regulator out of a spare alternator that was lying around. But, that regulator is worn out, and the alternator doesn't quite charge right, so until that's fixed, the truck is still driveway bound.

BUT, ladies and gents, boys and girls, just have to fix that alternator. Tidy up a few things here and there. And this big ol' beast will take it's maiden voyage!

Welp, so much for the test drive idea. My dad wants to pull the tank out, and really give it a good cleaning (too expensive to run tanks of gas through just to clean it). The tank still has varnish in it. So that's this weekend's project.

Thanks dude, never seen that site before, but it's handy.

At a delima, my '90 Firebird is becoming a slow money pit at the moment, with 257,000 miles. But, I need to get it going to get a job (local neighborhood stores seem full-up, and everybody is too good for teens to mow lawns).

Trying to get that thing going so I can get the job and get cash, possibly sell the car, and then bust ass on the truck for a few weeks and have it done.

I reaaaaallly like that firebird too  T-Tops and pop-up headlights are cool.

Got a good bit of work done on it today. Custom made a fan-shroud support and filler panel. Ghetto-bent the angle into it... By sandwhiching it between 2x4s, and using the wieght of the truck to hold them down (lifted the rear tire, put the stack under it, lowered the truck onto the stack), then using pry-bars at 1st, and then onto other 2x4s, bent the angle into the aluminum.

How we're sittin' at the moment. Still some mystery alternator issues, and then to pull the gas tank out and give it a good cleaning to get the varnished gas out, and it aught to be up for a test drive.

Need a job...

What does an Olds 442 W30 and our C10s have in common?

THanks man! Definatly has been good working on cars again with him after he sold his highschool cars off around 2000 when I was 9-ish.

I say good bye to my 1990 Pontiac Firebird, and hello to $2000 and a month of bustin' to get it done before the end of x-mas break. At least, that's my apparent pipe dream.

Once we get some confirmation about 73-87 brakes, were hittin' up junk yards tomorrow and getting the front susp. done. Power steering pump and braket were buying sunday from a guy off craigslist (god bless Craig). I'll have new springs from the guy I bought my gas tank, 2in drop coils all round. And I'll just buy new drop shocks from summit. That takes care of the biggest projects. Then it's those asinine odd-and-ends to take care of.

texanidiot25
12-15-2008, 04:35 PM
The up to date plans:
-Next weekend I'm hittin my favorite yard for a 73-87 C10 front suspension, and grabbing the 6-lug rotors off CPP.

-Fuel sending unit today, picking one up in a bit and bringing home the gas tank I bought a while back. By the end of the day the CST10 should be running on it's own gas again. The original tank was rusted to hell so after that one day, we didn't start it up using that tank again. (done actually, just need to tune the carb as right now it idles like crap)

-Seats/seatbelts. I can use the stock bench seat, but it's torn up. That, and my dad won't let me use this beast until it has shoulder belts. So, I'm thinkin' of buying the set of > 2007 GM truck seats I saw at Charlies for 200. Their 2 buckets with the center armrest/seat, and has built in belts. That's two birds with one 200 dollar stone right there.

-Powersteering, buying the pump and brackets tomorrow, and possibly the A/c brakets too.

-Interior, got a plan for that Olds 442 steering wheel I got. Seats will be changed. Door panels have to be done. The gauge cluster will be finished up w/the Cadillac clock once we get some more wiring done. Any added on stuff (EX: Radio, amp) will be ran on a custom harness to keep it out of the stock harness. Replace the bad bits of trim.

-Wheels, totally unsure. But sticking with the steel wheels at the moment

-Suspension: Getting 2 inch drop springs all around for $20 off the guy who I bought the tank from, shocks will be around 40 a piece.

As it's sitting right now:

Looks like you have a good plan :) I used '04 Silverado buckets for the same reason. I like the fact that the seat belt is built right into them. Just make sure to fasten them to the floor better than normal because if the bolts rip out of the floor then you and the seat would come through the windshield still hooked together! I welded thick 2 inch diameter fender washers to the bottom side of the floor to run the bolts through. That way it spreads the load out over a wider area making it harder for the bolts to pull through. Also be sure to use grade 8 bolts just to be on the safe side. Have fun building. You'll be driving her in no time!

It will be grade 8 bolts and thick steel plates holding that seat down. But, ejection seats were apart of the original plan. Just friends wouldn't ride with me after I told them that.

The ingenius way to clean out a semi-rusty gas tank:

1st, we used garden rocks from walmart and tossed in a few handfuls in the tank, we used a teeter-totter motion (My dad and I holding the tank at each end, one going up, one going down). This was like a rock tumbler, knocking off TONS of the rust.

Step 2, take out the rocks, nothing really fancy... Putting fingers inside the sending unit hole and catchign rocks as they roll past.

Step 3, while vacuuming took a good bit of the powdered rust out, it couldn't get it all. Thus, our ghetto... HIGHTECH FILTRATION DEVICE:

http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e321/texan_idiot25/CST10/IMG_0237.jpg
http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e321/texan_idiot25/CST10/IMG_0239.jpg

Fuel fitting form the sending unit, to rubber line, through a jeep filter, through the screw-on filter, down to the electric fuel pump that was on the truck when I bought it,and back into the gas tank. Run it for a few minutes, shake the truck (easy when your shocks don't stop the sway), and let it filter out the shacken up rust. After 15 minutes, the gas was coming out of our little rig clear as pump-fresh gas.

:metal:

Started it up on it's own tank in nearly a year. Just gotta have time to let it warm up and get the idle set and she'll run like a beast again.

But, good day no less, brand new seats out of a wrecked 08 Silverado, just gotta clean them up and fix one of the seats:
http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e321/texan_idiot25/CST10/IMG_0300.jpg
They look different shades of grey because the driver's side was wet from the carpet cleaner. But sweet setup no less, and for $150, cheapest set of seats priced so far!

Then went to go pick up the springs:
http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e321/texan_idiot25/CST10/IMG_0291.jpg

His project truck, and why I'm getting springs. Laid out on air bags, just started his project. So anyways, talking to his dad since he had left earlier, pull out my wallet to pay the man for the springs and shocks, and he asks,

"What's that for?"
"The springs and shocks," I say.
"He told me to just give them to you"

I was excited, called up the guy and he says "Yes, merry chistmas!"

So that's 250~ bucks saved!

http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e321/texan_idiot25/CST10/IMG_0299.jpg
Got home and ripped out the stock springs:
http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e321/texan_idiot25/CST10/IMG_0303.jpg

Toss in the lowered springs, not noting their exact drop, but realizing the moment the wheels hit the ground, the grins on my dad and I's face was large. It's too low to run, considering the axle tubes only have an inch until the bump stop, and maybe 3-4 inches until it hits the frame. So in the end we'll run 3inch drop springs instead of the 5 inch springs (later found the parts number) so that the truck can still haul and drive, but check out my ass!

Last night:
Holy awesome, I drove the truck.

So, it was backed out of the driveway, and turned around in the street, but it's movement. It's also hell. Every try a 3 point turn in a 5000lbs truck with no power steering? Ha... hahah... But it's a rumbling beast no less.

Anyways, backed it into the garage, it's cold, windy, and miserable outside.

The 1st side was easy. All was said and done in 45 minutes. The passenger side. Well... The lower ball joint was so worn out, trying to pry the spindle off it, was damn near impossible. Pulling the spindle up to pry off, pulled the ball joint along with it! It took 3 hours of hammering and mess unitl it finally popped out. But, spings in and down on the jacks:

http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e321/texan_idiot25/CST10/Chevy022.jpg

Sits perfect at front. While the body does sit level, the rear tires are still tucked in more than the fronts. And with the travel issues, eventually I'll throw in 3in drop springs instead of the 5s. But for now, the CST10 is down nice.

Finished up the steering wheel, Olds 442 wheel looks badass, and is a much nicer size than the original wheel. Went a head and ripped off the old cracked dashpad, just got tired of it. And re-installed the guages and finished the Cadillac clock.

Hardest part about this set of seats is each seat and the centerconsol all inter-lock, sharing bolt holes with the console, so after drilling holes, getting all 3 to bolt down in harmony was a bit of a PITA. Reaming out the holes a bit fixed t though.

So, 08 Silverado seats fit in your cab? Do the bolt holes line up with the seat bracket hump in the cab, or did you mount to the depressed area on the floor? I want a similar upgrade, but I don't want to spend a bunch of time and money if I need a custom bracket.

None of the brackets lined up with the stock holes. But, all but 1 bracket on each bucket are flat on the floor. I drilled the holes today, waiting on my dad to bring home some large washers to back the bolts up with. As far as the two brackets that aren't flat on the floor, they are about an inch off the floor, on the corner of the seat, closest to the door hinge (Best I can describe). And for the center console, and interlocking seat brackets, a pair of tiny studs need to be trimmed off the floor for the brackets to sit flat on the floor.

So basically, if you cut the little studs off the floor, and make a 1 inch +/- spacer, your good to go. In my case, I won't be using the bucket's seat belts, just the center seat's. One reason is because the truck we pulled the seats from was totalled (a roll over), so the seat belts were probably shot. Plus, the retracter mounts in the B-pillar of the GMT-900, and doesn't seem to have enough belt if you were to mount the retracter on the floor of our trucks. But for $150 bucks, it's the cheapest set of seats I've found junkyard hunting, and the most comfortable. Lots of side by side support, and having ridden in these seats in another Silverado for long lengths of time, don't hurt my rear either.

If any of this doesn't make sense, I'll grab pictures for you.

To be honest, I don't know where it came from, maybe one of the older members can figure it out. Saw it at the houston autorama swap meet. Took some rigging to adapt it to the olds 442 steering wheel though.

I see you are looking for 17" tires. Once you decide what you need look at Craigslist. I saw quite a few on there at decent prices.

I'll check them out. I've also got help from a friend at a local dealership too when the time comes.

Thanks man! Got the power steering lines on the box, front suspension is done for now (sway bar coming sooner or later). Waiting on the 3inch springs in rear to come, and my CPP rotors for the front so we can start on the brakes..

Anyone think a 60-66 bumper would look good on our trucks?

Thanks for the info, I'd love some pics of the brackets if you can get them easily. I already have shoulder harness belts, so I'd only want the center seat belt, and I wouldn't use the belts of the seats.. I'm hoping because of this, I wouldn't have to reinforce the cab floor if I tried to install these late model seats. Thanks for the help!

I used some thick body washers for all the seat bolts. IF all else fails, drilling some thick steel plates wouldn't be hard either. The center seat is locked in under the two bucket seat brackets on either side. So if you were to run the center seat's seat belts in a wreck, it would have to pull almost every bolt out of the whole set inorder for the center seat to come out. Of course, what ever you prefer, go with it. :)

Here's the rear bracket:

Front bracket:
http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e321/texan_idiot25/CST10/IMG_0360.jpg

You can see how the seats' brackets bolt down over the center consol's.

This bolt, the front outer most bolt needs a spacer. My dad had two chunks of aluminum laying around so we just drilled them out and that acts as our spacer. The seats also come with plastic covers to hide all the bolt holes so all in all, it's a pretty clean setup.

Cool powdercoat. Are you doing it in a BBQ?

texanidiot25
12-29-2008, 11:08 PM
An old toaster oven. Does it perfect. 400 degrees and the powder bakes for 15 minutes and the toaster oven can only count to 15 minutes on the timer. So it makes baking almost fool proof. Way faster than spray paint once you get things rolling too. Don't have to wait hours to cure 100%. After that 15 minutes of baking, and 10 minutes of cool down it's 100% cured.

6061 should work mighty fine, do you need 4 spacers or 2? And how thick do they need to be?

texanidiot25
12-31-2008, 12:18 PM
They need to be 1.5 inches thick for the rear. But the hub sizes are different between my axle and this rim (Dana 60 hub is bigger than the rims center hole). But if you were to do custom spacers, the side that faces the axle can be machined for the axle's hub, and then a new hub "lip" can be machined on the spacer to center the rim. Atleast that's just what I thought up last night.

Just the 2 for the rear, I'll see how the wheel and tire fit on the front today

As long as the wheels and lugnuts are lug-centric (most are), the spacer doesn't actually have to match the wheel's hub, only has to be large enough for the axle hub.
