Hey Kev What kind of Primer are you using?

View Full Version : LFD's low buck truck build! Angelse68cal 02-08-2008, 03:32 PM Hey Kev What kind of Primer are you using? Angelse68cal 02-08-2008, 03:33 PM Oh yea and Also what type of Bondo do you use? I am using Dynalite right now Rokcrln 02-08-2008, 07:37 PM Your statement on the body line has me concerned, as I am/was planning to cut down my longbed. From the pics the body line looks awesome, so I don't know what to think of your comment. The more I look at it the problem is right above the gas filler and not were the bed was cut (6" away) and also keep in mind that I cut out and flipped my marker lights then frenched in the light so I had 3x the amount of welding that a normal cut down would have. You are right it does look good but I know their is a small wave to it;) Hey Kev What kind of Primer are you using? Xtreme K2 I think, I will look later Oh yea and Also what type of Bondo do you use? I am using Dynalite right now Evercote Rage! Don't know if it is any better but I like the way it flows even in 40* temps and very few pin holes if any. Kevin LFD Inc. Palf70Step 02-08-2008, 07:50 PM Kevin you must have some strange work hours (like me), Glad there are other folks that get upo hours before the world does  Angelse68cal 02-09-2008, 04:27 AM Is the Primer Lac or Urethane? I really Like the PPG DZ3 primer but it is Frikin expensive 155.00 +Tax a Gallon. Rokcrln 02-11-2008, 11:26 AM Is the Primer Lac or Urethane? I really Like the PPG DZ3 primer but it is Frikin expensive 155.00 +Tax a Gallon. It is a urethane and also expensive but I don't recall just how much. Kevin LFD Inc. Rokcrln 02-11-2008, 11:33 AM Strange thing, when you get up at 3am and are in the shop by 4am you can get alot done by 7:30pm:lol: Today I color sanded the roof, bed and tail gate then polished them all as well. Since I was the only one around when it came time to put the bed on I puled out my "One Man Cab & Bed Lift" and just did it my self!! Would have been nice to have an extra hand just for guildence with teh new paint and all but oh well. I just taped some heavy tag board to the back of the cab and went for it. I think it took about 10min total from on the dolly to being bolted in, not bad for one guy on little sleep. Then I hooked up the fuel filler tube, bumper, tailgate and rear trim. I might get a chance on Sunday to put the side trim and markers on but we will see. Another 8hr day spent in the shop! So here are a few pics for now. My driveway was too full to get the truck out and to the glass shop so I figured I would try and get it all together instead, almost made it too! http://i16.photobucket.com/albums/b20/rokcrln/1-1.jpg http://i16.photobucket.com/albums/b20/rokcrln/2-1.jpg http://i16.photobucket.com/albums/b20/rokcrln/3-1.jpg http://i16.photobucket.com/albums/b20/rokcrln/4-1.jpg http://i16.photobucket.com/albums/b20/rokcrln/5-1.jpg http://i16.photobucket.com/albums/b20/rokcrln/6.jpg http://i16.photobucket.com/albums/b20/rokcrln/7-1.jpg http://i16.photobucket.com/albums/b20/rokcrln/8-2.jpg http://i16.photobucket.com/albums/b20/rokcrln/9-1.jpg Kevin LFD Inc. 166hrs main build $6163.00 main build 141 1/2 Paint hrs $905.00 Paint lolife99 02-11-2008, 11:56 AM Beautiful as always! Rokcrln 02-11-2008, 12:43 PM Beautiful as always! I really, really like the handle flip with the welded up handle hole. So subtle that most people will never notice,... but SUPER COOL to the people that do. When I see a truck like that,... I immediately start looking for other cool mods. I do the same thing and normaly don't fimd much. Seems most people do one or two mods and stop at that. I like doing as many as I have time for. On this truck I have done the Gate, side markers, 68 hood, 68 side trim, lond bed cut down witch give you 6 stake pockets and a different shape to the front wheel opening, hidden hitch, LT1, AOD.... That gate looks so good , makes me wonder about keeping mine stock ? how'd you paint the inside of your gate or will that be lined ? Yes it will be lined up and just over the top edge so I can have material rest on top of the gate and not worry about screwing it all up. http://i16.photobucket.com/albums/b20/rokcrln/10-1.jpg http://i16.photobucket.com/albums/b20/rokcrln/11-1.jpg http://i16.photobucket.com/albums/b20/rokcrln/12-1.jpg http://i16.photobucket.com/albums/b20/rokcrln/13.jpg http://i16.photobucket.com/albums/b20/rokcrln/14.jpg http://i16.photobucket.com/albums/b20/rokcrln/15.jpg http://i16.photobucket.com/albums/b20/rokcrln/16.jpg http://i16.photobucket.com/albums/b20/rokcrln/17.jpg Kevin LFD Inc. hotrodhomi 02-11-2008, 01:53 PM I saw "slow build" in the pics. Nice work. Yep it is sold and going back to Northern Indiana in a week or so. I need to pull the motor and trany in the morning and get all the misc parts secured in the truck so it is ready for the transport company to pick up. I have a photobucket account that I use for other sites but what link do I use? They give 4 different ones under each pic and also were do I load them in on this site? Do I just put them into the text area or somewhere else? Thanks, these computers are not really my thing:waah: Lets just try and see what happens! Looks like the is the winner! I am so good at this computer stuff:lol: 4)[IMG]http://i16.photobucket.com/albums/b20/rokcrln/ebonramp.jpg Thanks for your help I don't know why I did not ask this question a few years ago. Looks like with the photbucket way you can post larger files then you can with the regular board way, right? tdave00 02-12-2008, 03:23 AM I am really digging the 68 side trim. Sorta new so I didn't realize there was a difference between the 68 side trim and other years. I definitely like it much better than the wider trim with the black stripe in the middle. You have done a great job on the paint. I would imagine it looks 10x better in person :). BTW...I have just been uploading files to my website and linking to them from there. Seems to work fine, but photobucket accomplishes the same thing. Rokcrln 02-12-2008, 04:01 AM here are a few out side shots. Just another tip on the pics: If you're in your photobucket album you don't have to click on each pic to get the url. Just right click the thumbnail/properties and copy the url from there. Then you just remove the TH_ when you paste it in your image location field. For multiple pics in a series copy the first one from the text field here on the site ie:{IMG]http://example1.jpg[/IMG} and paste it as many times as you have pics to display(up to ten including emoticons) then just change the image numbers accordingly like: {IMG]http://example2.jpg[/IMG} {IMG]http://example3.jpg[/IMG} {IMG]http://example4.jpg[/IMG} {IMG]http://example5.jpg[/IMG} It makes posting multiple pics with interlaced text very fast. Rokcrln 02-12-2008, 05:43 AM How about polished aluminum. HAHA Tempting but to rich for this old beater truck! Plus I think the tires are more expensive as well! Kevin LFD Inc. Big J 02-12-2008, 05:46 AM I'd like to see some photo shopped pics of the two wheel colors. Its a hard choice. I can picture both and both look good in my head..... White would even look good with the white top you've got. Hmmmm, white,. Maybe someone will post up some visuals for ya. Btw this build is awesome and thanks for the how to on the tailgate handle flip. I'll be doing that to my K5. tdave00 02-12-2008, 05:59 AM White would even look good with the white top you've got. Hmmmm, white I think white would look good too. Those shiny beauty rings and caps would offset the white nicely. Whatever you do please don't paint them the color of the truck :). IMO that would just be too much blue. white http://trai.name/wp-content/uploads/lbwheel1.jpg and a touch whiter http://trai.name/wp-content/uploads/lbwheel2.jpg watahyahknow 02-12-2008, 06:17 AM yeah white could work but it make the crome rings less obvious SCOTI 02-12-2008, 08:04 AM yeah white could work but it make the crome rings less obvious And they'll get dirty faster than dirt gets dirty  . That's why I always used rattle-can stuff.... it's easier to touch up. Rokcrln 02-12-2008, 11:03 AM Well no progress on the truck today but I got alot of other things done. I pulled the motor out of Slow Build (new owner is putting in a 7L out of a new Tahoe) and got it all ready for the new owner to have picked up. I moved things around the yard to make some more room and to get project Trazer back in the shop so I can get started on it again. The owner has been great while I have been finishing up LowBuck but it is tiime to get it done! I got my cover for LowBuck but need to send it back to get the mirror pockets and antena sleeve put on. It fits well and is designed for out side sun, rain and snow with out scratching the finish. Like the Logo! http://i16.photobucket.com/albums/b20/rokcrln/23.jpg Fits well and should stay nice and tight. http://i16.photobucket.com/albums/b20/rokcrln/24.jpg Perfect fit for the bed and bumper as well. http://i16.photobucket.com/albums/b20/rokcrln/25.jpg Trazer all ready for it turn again! http://i16.photobucket.com/albums/b20/rokcrln/26.jpg http://i16.photobucket.com/albums/b20/rokcrln/27.jpg I hopoe to have the trim finished up this week so when it goes out for glass (now I can get it out of the yard since the clean up:lol:) next friday! Rokcrln 02-16-2008, 10:16 AM Well more progress tonight. I worked on the rear trim and lights so when it gets back from the glass shop this weekend it will almost be ready to go. Then next Friday it gets the Line-X sprayed in and after that I wil be waiting for the seat and door panels to get custom stitched. I found the Upholistrey shop today that will be doing a Black on Black custom job on the 88 chevy 60/40 split bench and the door panels. They will be done in a synthetic leather and Ostritch (SP?). I could drop it off in the morning but I forgot to order my seat warmers so I will be a week or so behind now. The shop is called WWW.supremeinteriors.com and I was to say the least extremly impressed with the shop, employee's and the owner who I spent about 1 1/2hrs getting to know. I will try and get a few in-progress pics of the seat work for you all. Another 4hrs to the paint list! Ok now onto tonights progress. I started off with the factory book for hole spacing and size. http://i16.photobucket.com/albums/b20/rokcrln/31.jpg Then I put on some blue tape to protect the paint while I started lining things up for marking. I started with the wheel opening piece and driled the top center hole first to lock it in place. http://i16.photobucket.com/albums/b20/rokcrln/32.jpg Next I taped on the sides and lined it up about where I wanted it to go. I keeped the body line spacing as close as I could but focused more on aligning it with the door trim. It all worked out good but the pics look off because of the curved cab corner piece but they do line up well. http://i16.photobucket.com/albums/b20/rokcrln/33.jpg http://i16.photobucket.com/albums/b20/rokcrln/34.jpg Then I marked the top and bottom of the trim, measured and marked the center, then spaced the holes according to the shop book. I started with a small pilot hole then the final hole for the clips. http://i16.photobucket.com/albums/b20/rokcrln/35.jpg http://i16.photobucket.com/albums/b20/rokcrln/36.jpg Then came the fun part, making the clips line up with the holes! Once they all fit I took some caulking and but a bead around the stud so once it went in the holes it would seal the hole and lock the nut in place as well. You can see by the little bit that came out of the nut that I had full coverage. http://i16.photobucket.com/albums/b20/rokcrln/38.jpg http://i16.photobucket.com/albums/b20/rokcrln/39.jpg Here is the finished trim all tightened up and ready for the road!! http://i16.photobucket.com/albums/b20/rokcrln/40.jpg http://i16.photobucket.com/albums/b20/rokcrln/41.jpg Kevin LFD Inc. 166hrs main build $6163.00 main build 145 1/2 Paint hrs $905.00 Paint Rokcrln 02-16-2008, 10:25 AM The lights are almost done as well. I decided that I will pull them out in the morning and line the inside of the housing with aluminum tape for more light reflection. I have done this in the past with really good results. I will show some pics of what I am talking about once I get them finished up. Here are the rear side lights. They turned out really good, fit tight and flush with the body. http://i16.photobucket.com/albums/b20/rokcrln/42.jpg http://i16.photobucket.com/albums/b20/rokcrln/43.jpg http://i16.photobucket.com/albums/b20/rokcrln/44.jpg The tail lights also fit well and they are just inside the body like I wanted them. They started out sticking out about and 1/8" at the top and about a 1/4" at the bottom just like most stock lights do. I did a few mods to the buckets to get them how I wanted. I think it was well worth the time. http://i16.photobucket.com/albums/b20/rokcrln/45.jpg http://i16.photobucket.com/albums/b20/rokcrln/46.jpg Kevin LFD Inc. gringoloco 02-16-2008, 10:34 AM Man, that really looks like crap! Im Going To Be In Sonoma Ca Next Week On The 19th And 20th And Would Love To See That Thing In Person. Shoot Me A Pm If You Have Time And Let Me Know If That Would Be Ok. Rokcrln 02-17-2008, 07:49 AM I just stared at the picture of the rear for a minute or two... The tailgate sure would look sweet with CHEVROLET in white to match the roof....... Looks good either way though. You've done some exceptional work!:metal: I have thought about this and if I do it I will have a pinstriper that I know do that and add my LFD logo to teh corner at the same time. Just curious, do those tires have white letters on the other side? because I think it would look better in this case if they were showing. I have the black letters out on mine, but they are aluminum wheels, so it's a different look. I just think the black walls and plain rallyes are detracting from the look of a very nicely done truck. JM2 pennies. Sorry but their is one thing in this world that I will never like and that is white out on tires. It reminds me of my first VW bug and that thing was a total piece. Kevin, Your build looks great. I have just one question, are we there yet? By next weekend I will be totaly done with this. I spent today just cleaning things up around the house and this week wil be the inside of the shop. I am really looking forward to getting back on Trazer and getting it into a full vehical for the first time in it recreated life!! Dan Wow That Thing Looks Sweet!!! Rokcrln 02-18-2008, 09:19 AM Well no progress on my end today but thanks to Rainbow glass the windows are getting installed. Should be all finished some time Sunday. I asked them what they use for caulking to help prevent water from getting in as we all know happens in these trucks. He use's a 3M product that he places in the window rubber first then installs the the rubber and glass so the caulking strip starts off inside and gets pushed out as needed. He says by putting it on the window frame first it tends to just get pushed out as you are setting the window and does not seal as well. He adds another type of gun caulking in the corners and factory seam areas after the glass is set using their pry tools for access. He was very happy with the fitment of both the rubber and SS trim as he has seen some real poor quality in his days. The rear window was sitting on a stand in back with the trim in stalled as well and it also fit great. I am having them do the door glass as well since I did not have much luck witrh getting the lower sash set right so the windows would operate how I wanted them to. He said the biggest problem that he see's is that people use a mallot to set the sash and they bend the roller chanel causing tight spots during operation. He showed me his fancy tool that gets the job done for him and from the look of the end I would say he has used it a few times. I can't wait to see it all finished up when I go to pick it up Sunday. I think I have found my new glass shop! I will let you know what it cost's when I get home with the truck. I also had a package on the portch when I got home from getting a few pic's. It is the seat heaters I ordered yesterday from summit racing. I thought when I am having the seat made it might be a good time to throw these in. I got a set for both the drivers and passenger side, they were $99 a set and have a two position setting for the back or both the back and butt. I am still waiting for my Cruise control kit to show up;) http://i16.photobucket.com/albums/b20/rokcrln/glass1.jpg http://i16.photobucket.com/albums/b20/rokcrln/glass2.jpg http://i16.photobucket.com/albums/b20/rokcrln/glass3.jpg http://i16.photobucket.com/albums/b20/rokcrln/glass4.jpg http://i16.photobucket.com/albums/b20/rokcrln/glass5.jpg http://i16.photobucket.com/albums/b20/rokcrln/seat1.jpg http://i16.photobucket.com/albums/b20/rokcrln/seat2.jpg Kevin LFD Inc. tripp 02-18-2008, 09:56 AM pm sent SOON2BLAZE 02-18-2008, 09:57 AM WOW, I wish I could find a glass guy that good!
