Just an up date. I put on new shocks that were about 2" shorter then what was on their and now it rides pretty good for a 4.5/6.5" drop. The rear shocks were left over from an old build I had laying around but the fronts I had to buy. They were $51.95 for the set and they are a gas reflex adjust type of shock. They were the only ones in th ebook that had the right mount's, the right length and most important they were in stock:lol:
I really wanted to get this truck out on the road so I was willing to spend an extra few bucks to get them today and not next week. They took about 2hrs to get installed only because the old shocks were welded to teh frame bolt and did not want to come off.

So now for my first report on how we have done so far. We are up to $3936.40, about 110hrs and it is on the road and tearing it up around town. I have done about 40 miles so far, some freeway, back roads and in town driving. Let me tell you this is one of the nicest trucks (55-78) that I have driven. The steering is superb, very tight with no slop at all and as smooth as can be. The brakes now that is the best part. they are very easy to push and the responce is better than our 2007 SS trailblazer and that has 4 wheel disk and some of the latest technoligy as well. The motor runs great, very strong with great torque thanks to the single 3" exhaust. It is not a power house but for what this truck was built for it is all the motor I will need for now;) The ride height is just right for a multi use truck, low enough to look great and get alot of looks but not to low that you have to worrie about hitting parking stops or dragging on steep driveways. The ride is not as soft as a stock 30 year old truck but it is also not somthing that is going to bother you on long drives and it handles way better than stock.

So with that all said I could not be happier with the results this far. Once I do some towing I will report back and let you know how that goes. I also want to get the speedo checked and adjusted if needed as well as getting the tach working. I may drive it to work next week to see what kind of MPG I can get out of it.

So could I have saved more money on this build? Heck ya maybe even up to half of what I have spent so far. But remember this is a Low Buck build with an end result of having a great driving and a great looking truck that you can hop into and head out for a cross country trip but at the same time not spend 10 or 20K doing it. Yes if you were to figure in my labor we would be up about 10k or so but since I don't charge my self for work I am into it for $3936.40 This is also why I have been showing so many of the steps and what ever tricks I can to help you all out so you can see that alot of this you can do your self or with help of your friends. But if you need to pay to have some parts of it done than you will have a good idea of how long it should take for when you are getting prices for different work.

I almost forgot that I have had three people want to buy it and alot of people checking it out and giving thumbs up:metal:

I stated that wrong in my last post  I meant handing of your keys and company truck/vehical so you can persue your own goals not the keys to "Low Buck", NO NEVER would I suggest such a thing unless it were to hand them over to ME

Thanks for the update Kevin. :metal:

You know how I feel about your work. I love it. Everything on this build has been awesome so far.

No plans of that at all. Get this I also have Slow Build that I have been working on for 8+yrs now and it is body dropped, bagged, 4wheel disk, 92 Vett LT1, 700R4 AOD, mini tubbed for 335/35/17's and still I like Low Buck alot more. Once Slow Build is finished it will get sold to start to fund my 2WD Blazer build and Low Buck will be towing (the blazer that is) it on the show circut when it is finished.

Yes it will be seeing paint but not right now. I have several body mods to do first and their is a customers vehical sitting in my shop right now waiting to get started on as soon as the baby's room is finished. But as soon as the room is done then I need to get A/C installed for Mama and little Taylor as soon as he pops out and that will be in teh next 3-6weeks so I am alittle short on time. My wiufe has Zumo doing some different renditions right now for my web site that she is building and depending how they turn out I will be able to show you the finished truck before it gets finished.

Stay tuned!

Also my Father in-law came over today to give us a hand around the house and I had him take Low Buck for a spin. His DD is one of two vehicals an 04 C5 vett or our 67 SS 396 Chevelle and after driving Low Buck he could not stop talking about how nice of a driving truck it is. This went on for the next 4-5 hours and he is not the type to do this so I think he liked it.

$3936.40 and 110hrs to date! Now the suspention is only bag over leaf in the rear and static up front if that is what you were asking about.

Well I felt like taking a chance so I hopped in Low Buck and headed off to work today for its first trip over 15 miles or so. My job site right now is 75 miles away and yes 75 back home:) I filled up as I left town and found I need to tweak the gas filler just a bit. It was dribbling back out some so I need to re angle the filler neck. I drove 65 +- the whole way and did not get on it unless Iwas getting on the freeway and it took 10 gal to fill her back up so that would be 15MPG:metal: But as the pump clicked off I heard that sound of water hitting the ground and guess what, the tank was leaking from the sending unit and it was not stopping:( It must have dumped 1/4 gal or better (must have filed the filler neck a bit:confused: ) and it was dripping right next to my hot exhaust and the puddle was flowing right up front under the truck! I jumped right in and took off and as soon as I was out on th estreet I nailed it and did not let off untill I was sure it was no longer over full. Not a good feeling at all. So now I will pull the bed and check out what is going on with the tank and re-do the filler neck as well. But on th ebright side since the truck did not do this this morning (I checked after I filled for any leaks) that tells me I put more fuel in this afternoon and that means I got better MPG than I thought:lol:

Well now that the main build is done as far as low buck builds (except paint) so I am making it a bit more comfy for driving. I sold my 99 SPD so this is now my only running truck and tow vehical so I added some interior goodies.
I changed out a few pieces that did not match like the dash pad, sun visor clilps, headliner and arm rests. I then pulled the seat and carpet and installed 36 square feet of dynamat extream. I will need to get another 36sq to complete the interior. I still have the doors and firewall to do. The first 36sq did the headliner, back of cab and most of the floor. I will do the cab corners once I weld up the trim holes and gas filler hole then I will do all the way up th efire wall to the top back side of the dash and in the doors.

Just what I have done so far is amaizing and I can't wait to do the rest some day. The truck is done for now utill I get some power issues fixed with my shop and get the next customer build done. It has been in the shop for a few weeks now and I have not been able to start on it yet so that is the next push.

So you installed the Dynomat under the headliner?

I was considering that. I thought about getting a 'new' headliner kit through one of the vendors & putting some insulation under it. I figured here in TX the Dynomat type stuff wouldn't like the heat & would release from the roof in limited time. My thought was the insulation (thin jute pad type) would be light enough that the headliner retaining trim would be able to hold it in place w/o problems.

Not ideal, but better than a bare 'tin roof'.

I don't think their will be a problem with this stuff comming down in the heat. If anything the heat makes this stuff even more sticky and as long as you prep it right and use alot of roller power putting it up I think it will be fine. I keeped it about 2" back from the edges of the head liner so it would not push on the conection of the trim and I used a spray contack cement on the head liner and bottom of the Dynamat to really keep things tight. I will let you know how it goes but so far this truck is feeling so solid and tight. I really need to redo the doors because that is the only rattle I have in the entire truck at this point.

jw, howcome you sold the super d ??

I sold th ePSD because I only used it for towing maybe once a month if that. Other than that it just sat colecting DMV and Ins fees on a monthly basis. When I did tow it would only be parts or maybe my rockcrawler but never anything that required that much truck. So now with Low Buck running great I will use that for my main non comuter vehical and my tow vehical. I would rather tow slower with Low Buck that faster in a Plain Jane PSD:metal: Plus how cool will it be to tow my 70 2WD Blazer to all the shows with a 70 tow vehical:)

Well the way I see it is back in the day these were bought as work trucks for hauling and towing. Now we have better brakes, tire's, over load air bags for the weight, trailers with good electric brakes. So as long as you are not trying to do 85 towing and keep it at 55 (Ca.) then you should be just fine. Heck you see people towing with mini trucks, car's wagons and how many times have you seen that old caddy towing the 24' fishing boat down the freeway! If you are smart and safe than I feel it will be just fine and like I said I will not be towing 15 ton like with the PSD, I figure my largest pull should never be over 7k.

I think it was $170 +- for 36sq feet. To do the entire cab from just under teh widshield to the bottom of the back window, inside the doors and the headliner section you would need right about 72sq feet. Let me tell you the 36 I put in made such a bit differance I can not wait to spend the next $170+- and get it in as well.

I had a chance to get my 71 (Slow Build) out today (well I had to remove the tent it was under for the last year) and got a side by side shot! I also put a battery in the 71 and that LT1 fired right up and after letting it run for awhile it started running great! It had a real bad flat spot right off idle when I first got it running so I got pissed and shut it off and here it sat for the last several months. Then I had a thought that maybe the new system just needed time to learn it self (Painless Perfect RPM computer and wiring kit) and sure enough that is all it was. So some day I may have two triving trucks:lol: Ya right who am I kidding!

Give that truck 2 weeks of driving, and that ecu will have that motor running like a beast. It takes them some time to learn and tune.

How much of a difference would you say the dynomat does for the quietness in the cab? All were doing on my '69 is dropping in some carpet, and thats probally going to be it.

Well the truck is complete as far as the Low Buck portion goes and now I will be changing things up just a bit. I am parting out one of my other builds and will be using the vett LT1 and 700R4 in Low Buck as well as my (7 yrs in boxes) old Vintage Air kit. The motor what is in their now is a new crate 350 with a turbo 350 trans and it will be going into my 70 2wd Blazer to help get that on the road. I also just had the rear end of Low Buck rebuilt with 3.43's, an Eaton Posi, new axels, seals and bearings. I figure with 360+HP I might need alittle more out back. Plus the old rear end started poping going around turns and just felt sloppy. Turns out it was very sloppy with warn out Axel splines, loose center carrier and a bad pinion bearing as well as 3.08's.

For curent update for now look at my other thread on this list called Shell Games. I took the truck to work this week and it did about 300 miles round trip per day and worked great. I averaged about 16mpg and 70-85 MPH;) Ran great now I just need to move the pedals farther away for more leg room.

It's back! Sorry it has been so long since my last post but I have been all over the place (inmy own head and shop:lol:) but it is time to up date and try and finish this thing off.
Last time I left I was sitting at $3936.40 and 110hrs but I think I left a few things out like Dyna mat pricing and the hood mod time. I think the dyna mat was $170 for what is in the cab now and about 4hrs to install with pulling the seat and carpet. The hood hod was free but time was around 30hrs:confused: This puts us at 144hrs and just over $4100 so we will start from here:)
Now I have done a few small things since I last posted but I will leave the time and cost out of the total. Reason is because I swapped out the motor and tranny for one I already had and the one that was in the truck was just fine and did not need to be pulled. I decided to sell Slow Build and did not want to take such a big loss so I pulled my LT1 and custom built 700R4 and swapped them. (But just for info sake I was into the engine and tranny about $8k) and that just reminded me I also put in a Vintage Air set up I had for that truck as well so their adds another $1000 and 12hrs:) Well their goes my $5000.00 budget but only by the price of paint oh ya and the new seat and belts I put in as well so another $400 and 10 more hours:( (but well worth it).
Here are some of the threads of what has happened out side this thread but all to the same truck so you all can catch up on your reading:)

Pedal mod's~http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/showthread.php?t=269717

So now I have a few weeks of semi free time so my wife want me to get the truck painted (I think she wants to start driving it but even she has standards:lol:) so in the shop it goes. I still plan on going after the look of John Fabris's 67 but a tamed down version with out trim and only a few small body mods. Also I have the 70 grill that is staying as is the 71 front bumper. So it will be a 85mph twin;) I will start by pulling the the interior but leave the glass, pull the grill, bumpers, trim, lights, handles and bed. Then I will DA down the truck before pulling the windows to keep some of the mess out of the cab. Then when the out side is close to being ready to block I will pull the glass and see what surprises I find. I should be ok because this truck is in really good shape but I always seem to find somthing when I start looking.

Then once the inside is ready I think I will make my fiberglass molds for the rear speaker box and kick panel speaker boxes since I don't want to fiber glass after it is painted. I will just tape off the areas and glass them to get the exact mold of the body so I can then build the enclosure's later down the road with out pulling it all apart again.

Then I will mask off alot of items and start spraying the interior and all the jambs. The plan is to spray the truck all together after the inside and jambs are sprayed. I am not going for a show truck just a clean Driver that will get alot of looks on the road. I have minor body work to do so it should go fast. Just a few extra trim holes and the tree sets of old mirriors that left a few marks as well as the drivers door dent. I think if I can get a solid week end I Can have the out side of the truck (minus bed) ready for primming and blocking, well see. I have started another thread for paint but I think I will keep it al here since this is the wrap up of the Low Buck build. I wonderhow many pages we can get up to:rolleyes: Here is a reminder of what Johns truck looks like for anyone who has been under a rock for some time and missed this truck. What this pic does not show are the ghost flames that are on it. I was able to see this truck and chat with John and his wife at a goodGuys show earlier this year and it is a truck to be proud if for sure!

I will be doing mine in a single stage paint with some clear added into it for a better cut and polish job after it is layed down. Also it will be a solid blue and not a matalic like John's truck. Well thaks for following along with this build and I hope to be all finished by the end of the year!

John thaks again for the aproval for me to do a slight copy:metal:

Well I hads afew hours tonight so I started stripping it down. Turns out the front fenders and doors will now be comming off so I can re-build the door hinges and get to the trim nuts to remove. So now I guess it will have a better paint job than I was going to do but still simple. I ordered a few parts from ECE today for the project. I got one of their black powder coated cowl screens and their tailgate handle relocation kit. Theirs does not require a tailgate skin for this mod. Next I will call up LMC and get all new tinted glass and that should be about everything but paint that I need.
Here are a few pics from tonight. Rember 2 hours ago this was complete:lol:

Well I called ECE yesterday at 2:15pm and gave them my credit card for the tailgate handle relocator kit and my cowl screen and at 3:00pm today it was in my front living room! Now I just need time to install it. It wont be untill the cab and front end are done because I will be doing the bed last. I hope this week end I will make a good dent in the prep. I have alot of trim holes to weld up and DA work to do.

I know it was starting to grow on me! But I feel it will still be a sleeper of sorts. I am going for a simple stock but lowered look that will still be housing almost 400hp! Maybe more if I get board;)

Sounds like you can walk to ECE and pick up your parts. Now I have an idea where Winters, California is located.

Sorry I forgot the word "Today" after 3pm. But still only one day is a great turn around. I know several companys that don't even get parts in stock sent out for a few days!
Winters is 20min away from Sacramento near Vacaville.
Zip 95694 It is a great little town.

Love working in the cold and dark! Well I did about 3hrs tonight and made good progress for the time I spent. I hope to have the drivers door, cab top and back done Friday night as far as DA work goes. Then I will blow it all off and pull it into the shop for the interior work and to pull off the pass fender. I will need to pull the batery and all my relays that are mounted on the pass fender in order to remove it so I thought I would wait till last to make it a push toy for a few weeks. I am into this part now $30.00 for an 80grit roll of 6" DA disks.
So far so good I have not found any bad spots and hope to not find any surprizes! Ya right!

I decided I will be running these tail lights and markers so I figure I better run the side trim as well. I think with out the trim it will look to plain and the lights will stand out as odd and not the smooth subtle look I am going for. For trim I have all new 68 side trim I will be using so I still need to fill all the old holes. This is what it looks like! No idea on price because the side markers are not even ready for sale just yet but should be in the next month or so.
