Wow.....Read through all 25 pages and I am amazed at the progress and I am subscribing to the thread to see the end result.

I do alot of fabrication work myself so I am really looking deep into what your doing thats not the norm and am impressed. My 72 has been on the back burner for a while but I have owned it since 1989 and have had 3 diff cabs, and 3 diff engine/tranny combos to where its at today.

You can see my recent pics in the link below, which has sat idle since 2004 (actually a little earlier).

I will start a thread on the project section so its progress can be checked.

I am glad I read your complete thread, because I seen the 3M drip rail stuff and wrote it down on paper to save because mine is needing the drip rail caulked too BUT a few pages later I see where you said you had problems and you found a different product to use and I was glad to see that or I would have done the 3M route.

This thread rocks........even though the "low buck" is getting a little more added......;)

The color is Nason Med blue. It is kind of a blue grey in the shade and a nice brite blue in the sun. I hope to have teh top painted white later today (12:03am) and then get a few pics out side this week.

cant wait to see it with the white.... ? for ya, are you gonna use that thin chrome strip to seperate the colors?

Yes I am using the stock trim to seperate the two colors. One tab was missing but I found that my Stud gun has the right tab's for this trim so I just spot welded one right back on. Well the white paint will not happen today:waah: I got the drip rail all masked off and ready for sealant only to find the new 3M foil wrap soft tube to be already set off and cured. It must have sat on a shelf too long some were!
So I will do some block sanding on the fenders and doors to get them ready for next weekends paint fest.

Well not what I was plannig on for today but it had to get done some time. I spent about 6hrs blocking and spot coating the doors and front fenders. They are ready for the final 400 blocking and paint.
Depending on my schedule and 3M's rep I hope to get the roof painted by Friday night.

Yeh not fun but what can you do. I figured for $25 a foil tube for this new caulking that it would be good but who knows. We will see what 3M says about it today.

Finally I got a good foil pac of caulking and boy does that stuff flow out nice. It is 3M 08360, worth every penny and best part is they say it can be painted in 30min. My wife got home from work tonight about 7pm and that gave me a chance to head out to the shop and get started. My son has been sick the past week so I have been lucky enough to play house Dad but as we all know that cuts way into the shop time but thats fine. So I got things caulked and have already put on the fog coat of white on the roof. I am headed back out now for the first wet coat. I will be done about 1am and I will try and get a pic if I am still awake:lol:

EDIT: Ok I needed somthing to do between the first wet coat and the second so I took a few pic's. First two are just the tack coat and the third is the first wet coat. This paint coverage is great and I think it will only need one more good wet coat if I don't get any dust in the paint. If I get dust then it will get a light third so I can cut it down later and polish it up as needed. Well 50min to go before the next blast!

Damn Kevin, your a machine when a project needs work. I am now scribbling out my previous notes about your last 2 3M product failures and adding this new stuff to my ever growing list of products or materials to use that actually work on the trucks. Your motivation working on these is making it tough for my truck to still be outside waiting its turn in the garage.

Looking good I might add.

Thanks
Jay.So far on this one I have just closed the door to the booth and sprayed! I have only been shooting small sections so their is not alot of build up and I have a fresh air full face set up for me. I do have plans for a roof exiting explosion proof fan before I start my 2wd Blazer this year. I have a 3' wide door in one of teh perminate walls that will get teh center cut out to house filters for the fresh air comming in. The bigest thing is keeping the both clean and the floor wet for keeping dust down for a set up like this. I feel the dust I did get in the cab was from the booth not being as clean as it should have been since I was rushing to get spray time in. Or from the exhaust vents on my full face mask. But what dust did get in the paint will sand and polish right out if I decide to do so. I the bigest thing is my shop is seperate from the house and the only flames out their are from my space heaters and they are shut off before spraying once the booth is up to temp.

that's sliiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiick! gonna paint the engine?
Just the plastic covers along side the intake. Thay will be the blue body color.

Well looks like I will be out in the shop tonight again untill the early AM getting the doors and stuff ready for paint. My Mom could not make it up to baby sit due to bad weather and my wife is on a dead line so she had to work this weekend. I might be able to shoot the doors and stuff on Sunday.

Ah yes the four bolt repair! You unbolt the four body mounts, lift off cab and set aside. Set new cab down and rebolt, problem solved!

You know this might be able to be repaired but in all honesty I would go with the steps listed above. Once the rust has gotten as far and as deep as yours apears it is realy about beyond repair because no matter what you do it will be coming back or you will end up replacing every part of that cab to fix the problem. Sorry it is not what you wanted to hear I am sure but it is the best advice I can give.

Well last night was another long night in the shop after my wife and son went to sleep. I got the doors, front fenders blocked and ready for paint. I also blocked teh top side of teh hood and it is ready for some slight spot repair and I cleaned and sanded the under side of the hood so it is ready for paint. I hope to be able to get out their this afternoon and shoot the doors, fenders and bottom side of the hood. That will leave the top of the hood, cowl. glove box door and engine covers for later this week. Then I will need to shoot the rad support (in place) so I can start bolting this stuff together. Then once the cab is 100% I will pull the truck out side and roll the bed in for some light mods and paint. I also need to do the handle flip on the tail gate and i will be doing a How-To for this.
Another 5hrs spent in the shop last night to add to the bill. I would hate to be the guy paying for this build:lol:;)

No it will not be fore sale but right now the hrs on the truck with curent paint time would be almost 15K just for labor;) Then add in truck parts and the truck as well. That would give you a ball park on what a shop build like this would set somone back.

That is looking really nice. Have you sprayed base clear yet or do you mainly do single stage jobs? The pictures so far show a really nice job,and I cant wait to see it completed further.

Yes I have and I like 2 stage much better but single stays with the Low Buck idea. I would rather spend $500 on decent single stage then $500 on cheap base and clear that will start to fog and lift in a few years of being out in the sun. Plus this is a DD/beater and single is so easy to spot repair.

Show rides are nice and all but my vote goes to good looking street driven trucks every time. Call em Real Rides. ;)
You painted the firewall black instead of blue. Any particular reason? I painted my firewall met black but with black inner fenders, rad & shroud, core support and a black engine I think it's too much and my engine is somewhat camo'd in a sea of black. My outside color will be blueish.

Yes I did mine in black because I did not shave the fire wall so the Vintage Air block off plates really stood out with the old color. Now with black they kind of hide and make my EFI wiring blend better. My motor still stands out enough plus I will be painting the engine covers Blue to match the body and the under side of the hood and fenders are also blue. If this was anything more than my beater truck I would have shaved it and painted to match the body. This re-paint started off as just a scuff and shoot but that went by the way side when the rocker had to come off because so did everything else.

I think I want to go with powder coat for teh rims and wonder how close they could get to it.

Here are a few pics of one of the fenders dressed up a bit. I must have had my Air PSI way off because I got some real bad orange peel on this set of parts. Well I have been wanting to try my hand at color sanding and buffing I guess now is the time:lol: I put the last coat on real heavy because I saw the orange peel starting to set so I know I have plenty of paint to get a nice level finish. Should be fun! Also here are a few pic's of the fender just to show how different this color looks in different light but still no sun shots here in sunny Ca. Also I was in a hurry to get paint on so now I am drilling thru fresh paint for my trim clips:waah: I will be using alot of caulking on the tabs once polishing is done and I mount these for the last time.

I almost forgot I am thinking about using these screws for mounting the lights. I will chuck them in the poor mans lath and get rid of the dimple in the top and shin them up a bit. They are S.S. and should polish up nice. What do you think? Any other thoughts? These are flush with the lights right now.

I am digging the look your going with on this project with the stock trim and subtle body mods and a factory type color and wheels.

From a traditional stand point is where the argent silver or dull aluminum paint comes in for rally wheels. I like most purist kinds can appreciate different colors of rally wheels but still love the original look for the argent or silver colors. My truck when I first got it had truck ralleys I painted a deep metallic blue.......looked good I guess on a primered truck but on a painted one silver or argent is the way in my opinion.

Since I have a 72 with 68 frt clip I was also tempted to place stock 67-68 side trim only on the truck........your emblems and relocated side markers are killer.

Rokcrln
01-09-2008, 04:07 PM
Thanks guys I was not sure just how the trim would set things off and now I know. It looks just incredable as far as I am concerned! It will look even better after a few hours of cutting and polishing. My wife did not want the trim to go on but I think she has a different opinion now that she has seen it;) Once the truck is all together I think it will make one hell of a dump runner:lol:

I was first going to go with the 69-72 top and bottom trim but I thought with having the 70 grill still on it but a one off 67 hood to fit the 70 grill that why not switch to the older trim. I like doing things that make people second guess them selfs as to what they are seeing. Same goes with the lights! I was going for a stockish look and I think I will end up with just that at first glance. Then the stance, hood that should not fit this truck, lowered and smoothed lights, later modle trim, LT1 vett set up and other misc stuff.

I can not wait to start my 2wd blazer because it will have slight mods (And alot of not so slight when you really look at it) from bumper to bumper. It will be a fun one for sure;)

Kevin,... EVERYTHING looks beautiful! I will be tuned in for the blazer build. A little off topic,... Did project "slow build ever sell? If so, did a lucky member end up with it? Thanks for keeping us posted.

Nice work! Dressing the fender in trim really sets off the color.

Can I get a pic of the stand used to hold the fender for painting?

Look down in the 190's for some pic's!

I totally forgot you were using a 70 grille shell and 67-68 custom hood.........and I thought I was paying attention. The full aluminum grille shell with the 67-68 trim is going to fool alot of people.

No slow build has not sold yet. I have had alot of lookers but I am not pushing it at this point. I am already loosing so much on it that if it does not sell I might finish it but then again I have way to much going on right now for that!

The Blazer build, well how can I say this with out getting alot of hate mail...
The first part of the build will be getting it all back to a real good stock body thru new panels, factory panels and things like that. Their will only be limited pics of it at that point for certain reasons. After that it will not be seen untill it is fully built and ready for the shows, Sorry:devil:

Wow, Low Buck is looking really good. The colors look great together. It will be nice when it is complete. I can't wait until we can get Low Buck and Lemon Drop together it will make a nice Kodak moment.
