View Full Version : Finally I Got High Speed Internet
ChevyCrazy67 01-16-2007, 06:30 PM I can now surf all the sites and look at all the big files I want without waiting forever. The only problem is that I switched internet servers and now I have lost all the stuff I had saved on how to post pics, ahat radio all the good stuff!!!! anybody wanna help a dumb brother out??
PS why is it since I switched servers now when I sign onto our web site all I see is red x's instead of pictures? I was able to get my avatar back up but all other pics are showing the x's??? sorry for such stupidity
Sillyoldman 01-16-2007, 07:07 PM I think Shifty will reply to this one......
Stocker 01-16-2007, 07:25 PM Yup -- oughtta end up in Computer Q & A, too...
1969k10stepside 01-16-2007, 07:28 PM :cong: on the upgrade:D
msgross 01-16-2007, 07:30 PM I know I get red x's at work when people link to another site for the pics... I would start with your IE security settings. It probably reset all your cookies and temp files when you installed your new providers software. did you lose your favorites list also? There was a way to save them first but not sure now.
Stocker 01-16-2007, 08:13 PM krue -- you don't have high speed?? I thought I was the only one  But with all your activity on here, how do you do it? My dialup is so slow, I don't even try to download videos. :(
sorry for the 'jack...
Igotachevyor2 01-16-2007, 08:23 PM welcome to the world of high expense internet:)
msgross 01-16-2007, 09:21 PM if I had slow Internet then I might work on my truck more!
Hoods69BadBowTie 01-16-2007, 09:54 PM LOL, me too. High speed is great. I agree if I had dial up I would get so much more done.

shifty 01-16-2007, 10:13 PM You shouldn't have lost all of your favorites just from getting a new internet provider. Never heard of such a thing.
Hope you have a firewall, if not, I give you 3 months or less before your computer gets hacked :)
As for the red X's, try clearing your cookies for this site....Click HERE (http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/login.php?do=logout&logouthash=43ecb69342b45fa0d4024c69fe1d75e4) and your cookies for this forum will be deleted, then close all browser windows, then come back and login to the forum.

QUOTE]
I meant that when he loaded a disk from his service provider they might have installed a lot of BS programs too (IE7, etc..) and changed his settings. Never know what companies put on the disk... (COmcast desktop Dr, why do I need that?):bs:
BillGent 01-16-2007, 10:30 PM Would he lose them if he saved them to AOLfavorites? with that heart thingy you drug to the fav collumn? Its been a long time since I had AOL but I thought they had AOL favorites.. and you also had computer favs.
shifty 01-16-2007, 10:37 PM Was he using AOL before? Nobody said what his previous ISP was, but that would explain a lot if he was, and, yes, that would do it.
Thanks, Bill. You're still MY HERO ;)
As always - more info, please. You can never give too much info!!!
flyboy 01-17-2007, 01:45 AM Welcome to the world of high speed. It definitely makes the internet addiciting and more exciting...
ChevyCrazy67 01-17-2007, 12:32 PM I did have aol before and all my favs was saved to there but I have found most of them and thats not a problem now, and I also have firewall. The only thing thats not back 100 percent is all the red x's. As I mentioned before I'm not the sharpest spoon in the drawer when it comes to computers so its probably something simple I'm overlooking. sorry for all the trouble.
ChevyCrazy67 01-17-2007, 12:36 PM Shifty as for the sound I have never been able to listen to anything except media player. before of after the switch of servers.
ps I tried the log off and signing back on and still have the red x's. They're not blocking everything mostly just everyone's avatar's, like on this post I can see Bill's avatar and mine but no one else. Also at the top and bottom of the page there is several things x'ed out.
shifty 01-17-2007, 04:39 PM What happens if you go HERE (http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/showthread.php?t=223518), bo you see anyone's avatars?
ChevyCrazy67 01-17-2007, 08:58 PM No I stil still only see mine, Igotachevyor2 and Bill's. it doesn't really bother me that much I just don't know what is different from before to cause this?
shifty 01-17-2007, 10:46 PM not really sure, unless maybe you don't have temporary space to store them...or maybe some "optimizer" crap leftover from AOL is causing your problems.
before we do anything else, let's do some quick and simple cleanup.
follow the instructions in this post very carefully: http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/showpost.php?p=1681268&postcount=4
that should dump any problem files that could be causing problems. We'll go from there.
ChevyCrazy67 01-18-2007, 09:25 PM OK Shifty I followed your thread to a tee on the cleanup procedures, did everything it said and what you said and it did free up alot of space for me and also found and fixed several problems I didn't even know I had but.......I still have the freakin x's. I just don't get it. I also checked to make sure all the old aol crap was removed correctly and from what I can see it has been.
shifty 01-18-2007, 09:32 PM Please try options 5 through 10 on this page:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/283807
Please do NOT do steps 11, and do NOT do steps 1-4 either.
Close out Internet Explorer after all this is said and done, re-open and try again.
Trying to find the problem with this red X symptom is a pain in the butt. If you can stick with me long enough, we WILL figure it out :)
shifty 01-18-2007, 09:47 PM Okay, so I lied :)
One more series of steps, but read the NOTE on the next line before you do this: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/915158
NOTE: A couple of things here. You can screw up your computer playing in Regedit. Read this first and look at it again before you start deleting crap. :)
When you click on that link above and it says to "locate the following subkey" of "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Plugins\Extension" ---- here is how you read that: Open Regedit. You will see a bunch of things that look like folders. Expand HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE folder. Expand 'Software' folder. Expand 'Microsoft' folder 'Internet Explorer', expand the 'Plugins' folder (if it exists ONLY - if you do not see it, then IGNORE this entire suggestion!). If the Plugins folder exists, then you should see at least a folder named "Extension" and maybe another called "MIME" under it. If there are any folders below the "Extension" or "MIME" folder, delete them ---- look at the picture below to really understand this. See "subkey1" and "subkey2" and 3? Those are what I'm talking about with folders being under "Extension" and "MIME". If you see any folders under those two items like that, highlight them and press DELETE to kill them :)
ChevyCrazy67 01-18-2007, 10:24 PM OK I tried the first one steps 5 thru 10 and no change. Now for the last one DUDE WOW I can only admire you for being able to understand that sh*t. I read it several times and did manage to make it part way through but I had stuff opened up in there I don't think Bill gates would've know what the hell it was. I couldn't find the extension key and finally chickened out but I did see several things in there about aol so that makes me wonder if all of aol stuff got removed like I had said earlier? Anyway I gotta give it up for tonight and get some sleep if you have anymore ideas I'll be glad to try them but if your tired of fooling with it I understand and thank you very much for what you've already done.
shifty 01-18-2007, 11:46 PM Haha, let's keep going.
Are the problems consistent (can you refresh the page (press F5) and have the same pictures fail to show up?
What happens if you right-click (right-hand mouse button) the red X and choose "Show picture"? Does the picture show up?
ChevyCrazy67 01-19-2007, 09:08 PM No on both of them. I don't know if this will help or not but I just remembered when I signed onto this site for the first time since switching servers that I couldn't see my avatar also, so I went to my profile and redone my avatar picture then it was fine?? Still I can't see everyone else's which is crazy why some show up and some don't, and also why some of the smiley's show up and some don't. Also like where it says in your post add to Shifty's rep or right below it reply all are x's at the top of all the pages where it shows the links there's an x by those. sheesh I know its over my head so its up to you to call it. shoot it or keep going?
ChevyCrazy67 01-20-2007, 09:46 PM You ain't gonna believe this Shifty but the x's are gone!!!!! the worst part about it is I didn't do anything at least I don't think I did. I did all the stuff you said and nothing had worked yet but tonight when I got on here I noticed all the avatars where back and no x's anywhere. Go figure, maybe all the cussing and threats I made paid off? What do you think? it just clean blows my mind.
shifty 01-21-2007, 01:13 PM
Did you happen to reboot recently after doing any of the stuff above?
I know this will sound crazy, but rebooting is usually the single most effective thing you can do to your computer to fix problems.
Think of it like this: Windows is like a toilet. If you leave it up without flushing it and tons of people are using it, it's going to get full of sh*t. If you don't flush (reboot) the toilet, it ain't going to work so hot or it's gonna clog up to the point that it might not flush the next time you try :haha:
It's a good idea to reboot the computer regularly (1-2 times per week). You should usually reboot after installing large software programs, drivers or Windows Updates. However, as confusing as this might be, computers that stay on all the time tend to last longer than ones which don't. It's kinda like driving a car - A car that goes on roadtrips is gonna last longer than a car that granny drives to the store and back each day (2 miles either way). Computers operate best when you let them warm up and stay warmed up. Turning them on and off causes heating up, cooling down, heating up, cooling down, rinse, repeat, and before you know it, all of the heating and cooling causes something to break. This is exaggerated a bit, but you get the idea.
Glad to hear it's working. would love to know what did it :D
watahyahknow 01-21-2007, 04:15 PM good thing with the high speed internet is that you now can download movies and music at a reasonable pace .
since i have high speed i never whent to the videostore again to rent a movie i click some files and leave the puter running overnight
ChevyCrazy67 01-21-2007, 08:42 PM Yeah Shifty I did reboot it a few times during all of this, however I am guilty of not doing this regularly thus maybe resulting in it not working the first time I guess. Anyway whatever the cause this has made me more aware of how important it is to take care of all the little things before they turn into something big. We might never know the exact cause although it wasn't a big problem it still makes me wonder. Again Shifty thanks for your help on this.
poorboy 01-21-2007, 10:10 PM Switching to high speed/cable was the best thing we did. Especially when listing stuff on ebay. I use to hat uploading pics.
