Okay, I've done some research on this topic but none of them fit my scenario. I have a Compaq NC6220 (corporate PC) running XP-Pro. The last 3 times I have went to shut down my computer I get an irql_not_less_or_equal BSOD. As of yet, it does not happen while working--only when I shut down. Is a dead laptop or hard drive coming? I have everything backed up (twice) just in case.

You can get a similar message for several things. Normally it is related to some hardware incompatibility or problem. Normally I have seen more to the message, but it is hard to see it all sometimes because it goes into the BSOD or restarts automatically.

Can you read the entire message when it gives you the BSOD??

Yeah, I will write it down and post the next time I shut down--my laptop is not set to auto reboot so I can stare at the BSOD as long as I want. I just gave the basic scenario here. This is my 4th laptop in 4 years--the first one was old and it died--they gave me an older one (bad idea) so 'someone' intentionally KILLED it :hm:. Next I got a NC6000 went and it went through 2 hard drives in one year before I got the 6220. I have had the 6220 8 months and lost one hard drive already

That error is typically driver related if I am not mistaken.

Do you get a "Windows has recovered from a serious error" when you boot back up again? If so, did you click the "more info" link to see anything?

HAve you turned off the automatic reboot for that system yet? (just curious)

Can you get the STOP error ID (in format 0x00000000)?

Can you get a DLL or SYS file name associated with the shutdown (sometimes this will show as, say, nv4_disp.dll for nVidia cards, but it varies, could be anything)?

Have you upgraded the computer recently in any way?

Does the Event Log show anything? Right-click My Computer icon, choose Manage, once hte mgmt console comes up, expand Event Viewer and look in the System log and Application log around the time of shutdown to see if anything hung.

I hate HP computers and will never understand how people can swear by them and put down Dell in the process. I have had nothing but the same experience as you have with them in a corporate environment (maybe it's different if you just leave it in one spot all the time?)

Have you went to hp.com, Support section, Downloads section, put in your model number nad downloaded all of your driver updates?

HAve you turned off the automatic reboot for that system yet? (just curious)Auto reboot is not set. It normally stays at BSOD with all the relevant info--I have yet to copy all of that down. Yesterday when I shut down it stayed with the little message 'saving system settings' (or something like that) for about ten minutes until I had to hold power button doen in order to shut down.
Can you get the STOP error ID (in format 0x00000000)? Will do at next log off.

Can you get a DLL or SYS file name associated with the shutdown (sometimes this will show as, say, nv4_disp.dll for nVidia cards, but it varies, could be anything)? ditto from above

Have you upgraded the computer recently in any way? Nope--been running in stock form (hardware wise) since they assigned me the POS.

Does the Event Log show anything? Right-click My Computer icon, choose Manage, once hte mgmt console comes up, expand Event Viewer and look in the System log and Application log around the time of shutdown to see if anything hung. Will do tomorrow.

Possible--my supervisor has an NC6000 that stays glued to his desk the majority of the time with no issues in the last 2 years. Myself, however, I take mine everywhere but I do my best to protect it physically. . .

Have you went to hp.com, Support section, Downloads section, put in your model number nad downloaded all of your driver updates? Yes. . .

It's sucks that they charge my department $317 monthly for this POS. I relaize that includes s/w licensing, support, etc. but they could at least research the availaible units and provide something a little more reliable. . .:gi:

I pay $1200 for a killer Dell D620 like the one I have and get to keep it. I love it :D

Finally got around to looking at this again.

That error is typically driver related if I am not mistaken.

Do you get a "Windows has recovered from a serious error" when you boot back up again? If so, did you click the "more info" link to see anything? No, it boots normally.

HAve you turned off the automatic reboot for that system yet? (just curious)

Can you get the STOP error ID (in format 0x00000000)?
Stop 0X0000000A (0X000000B0, 0X00000002, 0X804EE061)

Can you get a DLL or SYS file name associated with the shutdown (sometimes this will show as, say, nv4_disp.dll for nVidia cards, but it varies, could be anything)? Did not see one?

Have you upgraded the computer recently in any way? No.

Does the Event Log show anything? Right-click My Computer icon, choose Manage, once hte mgmt console comes up, expand Event Viewer and look in the System log and Application log around the time of shutdown to see if anything hung. See below--I shut down around 4:00pm. The warning 'events' 1517 & 1514 are listed in event manager miltiple times--almost exclusively around the time when I am shutting down.

Uninstall Google Toolbar and reboot. That should fix the latter of the three.

As for the other two - really ambiguous items. I see them all the time on my systems when connecting remotely, mostly due to Norton Corp. Edition that I have installed on those systems.

Stop 0X0000000A / IR!_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL:: Troubleshooting - http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314063

I realize I'm making you do the legwork - IRQ_N_L_O_E is one of the most common errors, usually driver related, but sometimes software related. Follow those steps in that troubleshooting thread, one should (hopefully) help.
