So how do those rear breaks work for you? Did you use the 3" steel hat or the aluminum hat? The price seems right thats for sure... Looks great though..

Thanks All!!

itsmike2k - So far the brakes seem fine though I don't have the vacuum hooked up yet or is the the truck street ready, but, as the pic shows below, I'm pretty lucky to have a HUGE area to play and work the bugs out. During the weekends and after work the entire parking lot is just about empty.....I'm quickly ridding the old back tires on this thing of all that nasty unwanted "tread"!

I'm located where the Red arrow is.

If you're willing to do a little welding, I would recommend the Speedway kit. OH, and I'm using steel hats.

(This is a copy of my previous post, but just wanted to add it to my build thread)

Progress continues....Vintage Air and ReWire.

Vintage air is partially installed and no major hickups yet with the exception of having to modify the rear mounting brackets and one of the condensor brackets as well. I also decided to paint the firewall and fan cover to match the truck. Got a good deal on it last year up at Hot August Nights...seems it was around $750 (without compressor and bracket).

This wiring thing is VERY time consuming. The harness is an EZ Wiring kit and is working out just fine......haven't burnt anything up yet!! I only paid $125 for it at a swap meet a year back or so. All exterior lighting is functional and it actually starts with the key now!

One regret I have is not filling all the holes in the firewall.....gonna have quite a few left that I will have to plug....anyone have any good ideas on attractive ways to plug em?

SactoJim your truck is sweet. Can you tell me what headers you are running (looks like Doug Thorley?) and do they hang down below the frame. if so by how much. Thanks.

What did you do with the top trim? I need it for my truck

SactoJim
06-04-2007, 03:29 PM
lvscott - They are Doug Thorleys and I've had em for about 13 yrs. They did hang a bit low when I put em on. I heated them up and used a floor jack to get the collectors closer to the frame. I have to be carefull, but they aren't too bad. Right out of the box with truck at it's current height, I think they would be more of a problem.

mattsz - sorry, but I tossed em quite awhile ago....they were pretty beat up.

Hey what sway bar did you use?

SactoJim
06-04-2007, 03:50 PM
itsmike2k - I've had that sway bar since like 92!! Bought it from a company in Oregon called SoLo Suspensions. I don't think they are around any longer. Made a huge difference...think it's 1.25" and I had to make some new mounts at the frame because it cracked one of the old ones!

The truck is looking great!

I hope you can help me with something. My core support does NOT have the hole for the A/C lines (and the vintage air directions have no dimensions for where it should be, their instructions assume it's there  ) anyway, could you give me some dimensions from a body line to the center of the hole, something like I've shown? I don't think it needs to be perfect, but close would be nice :D

Also, any idea what size hole I need to drill for the grommet to fit?

Thanks so much for any help. The grill is on my truck, so I'll have to drill from the backside.

SactoJim
06-04-2007, 05:42 PM
I'm at work, so it's a little difficult to get too detailed. centerline of the hole is 5" (horizontal) from the radiator opening and 12" (vertical) directly down from the top of the radiator support (almost in line with the bend at the top of the support). I measure my grommet at 1.5" so I would drill a 1.25" dia. hole.

...also, where's the best place to get lower door panels and kick panels that have carpet on them (black loop). The previous owner cut some big ugly holes in the doors!!!

Thanks for the compliments guys!

Maybe map pockets from the same upholstery as the seats.

3.73 gears and about 2000 stall on converter.

Motor makes a ton of low end torque so I don't need much stall, which works great cuz cruz RPM is a little above stall RPM.

Thanks!

These have been posted before, but wanted to add to my build thread.

Haven't done a whole lot lately except continue struggling to put the front glass in. First a buddy and I tried it then I had a glass guy come out and he failed, then another glass guy that was out changing glass in one of the company vehicles gave it a shot and bent one of the mldgs trying. So then I found the factory stuff, worked some dings out of it and polished it up and my boss and I gave it a shot and ALMOST made it until....CRACK!!!...SON OF A B.......! Cracked the glass at one of the upper corners.

......and it's been 8 fricken weeks since I ordered my "not so American" racing wheels and it could be another 2 weeks or so!! I wish they would hurry up and get here cuz having to wait this long has got my rethinking my choice.

patience.

The last pic is the wheels I have on order (photoshopped).

Hey Sacto,
Great job! I've been watching your progress, and I love that truck. Hope you get that windshield in soon, it sounds like a real pain to deal with. Is it the trim in the rubber that's giving you grief? I know there are two different sizes and two different rubbers available. Something about the groove depth in the rubber I think.
Great choice on the rims. You won't be dissapointed. It's a racey look. Mine took a little over 8 weeks to get here too. Say...those red calipers look familiar,

Cheers,
Pete

08-29-2007, 11:19 AM
Thanks Pete,

Yeah, I stole the wheels off your brother's truck...couldn't help myself and I will return them soon!!

I do have the correct molding and rubber (checked and rechecked), but the aftermarket stainless had a little bit different curvature than the factory piece.

The leg that extends into the rubber is a tad deeper on the factory molding as well and seems to hold the rubber in better during install....either way it's been a HUGE pain in the @ss!! Now I gotta buy another piece of glass and talk about being "gun shy" during the next install attempt.

They say it's not the destination, but the journey that counts!......after 6 years, I'm getting a little tire of the "journey"!!! LOL!

Shock_Me
08-29-2007, 12:07 PM
A pain in the "glass" for sure...groan.
What about sourcing a nice original set of stainless? I want to change my rubber out soon, and replace with the stainless version. Now I'm a little spooked! Where did you get your rubber and stainless at? I have an original set of stainless I might use, but it's not perfect. A little dent here and there :(

Cheers
Pete

SactoJim
08-29-2007, 12:34 PM
Got both trim and rubber from the Car & Truck Shop. My Factory mldg had some dings in it as well, so I thought I would try and fix em. Basically I just tapped out the dents so that they were "high spots" and sanded them down just like I was cutting and rubbing out a vehicle. Ended with 3000 grit and finished with a metal polish....they actually turned out very nice.

If you can make the factory pieces work, that's the way to go. The little bit they fit better seems to make a big difference.

The reason my glass broke during install had nothing to do with the quality of the rubber or stainless.

GLASS UPDATE.....

....Well after 5 install attempts (2 from "glass guys"), one screwed up molding, and one broken NEW window, I finally got my front window in!

I ended up using the original factory stainless trim....just had to remove some dings and polish it up. The little bit it fit better just made the install easier.

Don't we all have that..."I wish I would've kept it" story. For me it a 68 Camaro Z/28 replica that was a blast to drive. I bet that 402, 4 speed Cheyenne was pretty cool and I gotta think kinda rare with the 4 speed.

Mine is actually a true Cheyenne that was ordered with a "3 on the tree"!

Few more progress pics.

Didn't like my seats sticking up in the back window so I took 1.5" out of the rear and 1.25" out of the front of the factory brackets.

Gonna make some nice covers to finish off the brackets and the seat will get re-upholstered in either all Black or Black with some Graphite inserts or something.....not quite sure yet. Gonna use one of those similated leather materials.

...as posted in the regular forum.

Well, I finally fixed the dented fender from my wheel falling off mishap....got some longer studs, so it won't be happening again!

Got the seat back from the upholsterer...turned out nice. Had the inserts for the doors done with the lighter Grey as well.

Since I had the front end apart to fix the fender, I decided to paint the grill a few shades darker Grey and I like the way it turned out...more aggressive looking.

Also installed some insulation on the underside of the hood which made a big difference in engine heat transfer to the hood, pretty much eliminated engine sound from outside and also gave the hood that "quality" thud sound when closing it instead of that "tinny" sound. As I said in a previous thread...it's definately function over form, but it looks alright.

Very Nice! It looks great. I especially like the grill. The factory silver is just too light for my liking, and gloss black looks tampered with. The dark grey is a great compromise, and looks better than factory IMO.

Still got the wheels (tires still mounted, but pretty wore out) and I will probably try to get rid of them locally....just easier. I don't have boxes or anything to put them in and not sure what it would take to ship. My zip is 95678 and I'm looking for $300 for em.

I've had it for quite awhile and I believe I got it from Turner ......I think that's the name and I don't think he's around any longer.

Yes, both seatbacks hinge forward.

Been working on the sound system. The PO hacked the doors pretty good so I decided to make a plate and mount my components in the doors. Gonna have to make some kick panels with some integrated speaker grills....should be fun! Also working on a sub box and back panel to mount the amp.

Also got my tranny cooler installed. between this and the Pan (Derale with cooling tubes) I hope the tranny stays cool enough, I'm going to get a tranny temp gauge just to make sure.

BTW....my exhaust is discolored cuz I put some "hi temp" clear on before I put it back on. It's burned all the way off where the exhaust has gotten hot enough.....gonna have to sand the rest off!

Also finally put an air filter on it. I really wanted to come up with something different, but I gave in and bought with K&N setup. I really wanted some type of cold air setup, but not only did I not have many options for intake, I'm not real fond of the "clothes dryer exhaust" for intake tubes. I was also concerned about CFM. the lid is real close to the hood when closed.

For a tranny cooler I went with the B&M remote mount w/ fan and mounted it in the same spot. I have a temp gauge and I had to beat the sh!t out of my truck (power brake, hard launches) for almost 45min to get the tranny to kick the fan on (180*). I have towed heavy loads and done a few 300 mile trips and never a problem. So if yours does not do it for you look into the B&M I put on LowBuck.

When I was headed back from Woodland yesterday I saw a truck like yours color wise and shine on a trailer heading up 505 as I was headed down. As it went by I noticed the entire front end was about 2+' feel shorter than it should have been and I was hopping it was not you or if it was that everyone was OK.
