I have a 72 K5 that needs a new gas tank was wondering where was the cheapest place to get one and which do I need (steel or poly). Also do I need to get a new sending unit and straps or will my stock one do the job?

Ebay has them. All the board venders have them too. All priced pretty close. They do come with straps but if your old ones are good, just use them as the fit is much better. Mine came with the sending unit and lock nut. The filler neck will need to be modified or you need to find a rubber hose that will fit. You will see what i'm talking about when you get your tank.

Let me ask this, I have been planning on replaceing mine because it is 1. old and may be somewhat rusty on inside and 2. has a very slight leak from a dent or rock that abraded it and someone attempted a repair but when I started disassembling the blazer last year, I noted that that area was still wet looking, not streaming out but wet. PO welded a small patch in the corner. With all the fitment issues I.m reading, would it be better to repair tis one or is it possible? Thanks

Most things in auto related topics I will attempt, this does not include repair of fuel tanks, big bang theory.

You might try to look inside your fuel tank by removing the sending unit, then you could add a tank sealant if it is rusty.

Someone on the board wrote a very good thread on the topic of tank replacement and his troubles. Most of the problem was due to the fitment of the filler neck. Straps are another issue, save yours if you can.

Good luck guys, I'm sure some other guys will have opinions. Just my .02

You can have a tank recoated on the inside it is supposed to be very effective. A friend had to do that for a Tbird that had no repo available.

Just buy a new steel tank then take both tanks to a raditior shop and have them solder the old neck on the new tank simple and cheap

take it to a radiator shop and they will clean and coat it, and can probably fix the leak for you. if it is leaking from a SMALL puncture i would fix it. if it is leaking from rust i would replace it.

I built my own tank, 50 gallons:metal: it hurts to fill it, but when I'm out wheeling I know I'll make it home.
