View Full Version : Project: 19fn68
dsigh 01-26-2007, 10:16 PM I sold my GMC longbed to Litemup and finally was able to get it trailered up to him in WA this morning. (Anthony, thank you again for your patience). I then made a trip to the yard in Norcal that I previously posted a thread about - "Struck Gold in Northern CA." I picked up a rolling coil spring frame with SWB and am in the process of starting my next project. Progress pics to follow..:metal:
porterbuilt 01-26-2007, 10:56 PM Is that the wife in the background???... she looks excited about your new find!

IvelDesigns 01-26-2007, 11:12 PM lol
powell72 01-26-2007, 11:16 PM At least all the hard to find parts are accounted for. That's a good start.
GREASEMONKEY72 01-27-2007, 08:41 PM well its a start and hell maybe when i finally go to school ill help you with that thing if you havnt finished it yet

masterbeavis 01-27-2007, 09:33 PM She prolly wont be as exited when he comes back from my house... :D
GREASEMONKEY72 01-28-2007, 12:12 AM ^uh oh^
70GMCer 01-28-2007, 08:18 AM She just finished praying.......
n2billet 01-28-2007, 12:05 PM I always like to park my new "find" in front of the house to show all the neighbors. I'm almost certain their reaction is the same as your wife's!
Snowbound 01-28-2007, 01:21 PM They say a picture speaks a 1000 words. Not so with my wife. She had well over a 1000 words for me the last time I dragged home a project!
I can't beleive you guys find SWB trucks in wrecking yards. I could count on 2 hands the number of SWB trucks I've seen on the road, never mind even hoping of finding one in a yard!
Brian
Litemup 02-03-2007, 04:42 PM Right on Devin, can't wait to see what you do with it, keep us posted!

I saved my frame from being chopped up and thrown out. The guy that had it before me took the whole thing apart and was gettin ready to slap the body on a later model 4x4 frame. That woulda been fine except he was gonna use it as a trail truck/rock climber and beat the tar out of it. My biggest issue with it now is getting it all put back together. Glad I found it when I did.
FarmTruk 02-03-2007, 05:20 PM Looks like a fine truck to me...
GREASEMONKEY72 02-04-2007, 03:34 AM havnt talked to you in a bit, any new progress with the build at all???
Bishops Trucks 02-04-2007, 05:34 AM I think she was holding her chest after the heart palpatations started.
My wife did the same thing when I bought home a basketcase '67 GTO. Give us a build thread when you get started.
dsigh 02-05-2007, 12:22 AM I dropped a bedside off this weekend in Sac to get the body molding holes leaded in. With the backyard taking priority, I may not have too many progress pics for a little while.
GREASEMONKEY72 02-05-2007, 12:31 AM well atlest your making some progress, but priorities are priorities
masterbeavis 02-05-2007, 08:05 PM well atlest your making some progress, but priorities are priorities
FEH, that is what a COT and a microwave in the garage is for. All you need to live is a HOT and a COT.
dsigh 03-02-2007, 06:33 PM So it's been a little while since I've updated this thread, so I took some pictures today. You guys will have to be patient with me, this will be a very slow build. With the wedding, the house, it's currently the third priority right now.:(
My fiance is learning why it was so important for us to find a place with "RV access for Dad." As you can see, this is where a lot of the build will take place. And because our deck needed some cleaning, I made the argument that we needed a pressure washer. This is all working out nicely. If anyone has a line on whitewalls for my new toy, let me know!
POR 15 should be here by the middle of next week. I'm just prepping the frame right now for that. One bed side is at a fabricator shop in Sac (Blue Collar Customs) getting the molding holes leaded in while the other is getting worked by a body guy. After the bedsides are completed, it's on to the grille and the wheel wells, and tailgate.
I was supposed to pickup a donor truck from -masterbeavis- this weekend, but it looks like we've had too much rain. It will make it impossible to get our trucks up in the hills to get the '68 longbed.
I'll keep you guys posted.
Devin
dsigh 03-02-2007, 06:37 PM Few more pics. I found some cheap rollers on Craigslist for the frame after I do the 5 lug conversion.
CPNEJR 03-02-2007, 07:06 PM looking good
GREASEMONKEY72 03-03-2007, 06:53 AM some progress thats good, i like those wheels, i dont remember if you said or not but what kind of wheels are you gona run? those? cause if not i know a place you can get rid of those wheels when youre done with them:hm:
Spray-Bomb 03-23-2007, 10:01 PM I like those wheels
What are they ?
Litemup 03-23-2007, 10:05 PM That's to bad Devin, sorry to hear you could'nt keep goin, I'll have some pics of what I've done to the GMC in a few weeks.
cabinetguy 03-23-2007, 10:17 PM Do Not get rid of the project.:bs: You will never convince the wife to do this again after your married. Just Store it.
GREASEMONKEY72 03-24-2007, 12:23 AM ill go up and steal those wheels from you....i mean help convince her to let you get another one later on...:hm:
dsigh 03-24-2007, 05:46 AM Guys, my wife (to be) has nothing to do with it. It's about getting into house #2 and paying for the wedding, and still have cash on the side.
Palf70Step 03-24-2007, 07:30 AM Don't worry about the build. It will be there when time and funds allow. Mine has set since December due to no time & lack of funds. I am hoping I can get back on it in April. If not, I'll blow even more dust off it when the time comes. Good luck with everything else you got going on. It can be crazy with all that at once.
FRENCHBLUE72 03-24-2007, 06:58 PM DOES YOUR WIFE KNOW MINE CAUSE iVE SEEN THAT LOOK BEFORE...
GREASEMONKEY72 03-24-2007, 09:18 PM all kidding aside it is about the major priorities and i think youve got those handled pretty well and youve got a keeper in youre wife to be and you can always get another truck anyway
dsigh 03-25-2007, 11:21 PM Spray-Bomb - Wheels are off a Caprice with the Police package. Got them cheap off of Craigslist to roll the frame, if it ever does again.
Thank you all for your support.
Steven - even though I appreciated you reply, you're still not getting these wheels.
My truck has sat for the whole 4 years i've owned it. I've literally driven it once. Shortly after purchasing it, the navy transfered me to MN, so i was forced to leave it in CA in my grandparents backyard (gotta love them). I finally towed it to MN last summer, where it has continued to sit in my driveway, although progress is slowly being made now....
That's the way these projects go, don't give up, there's always a solution. you never know, somebody here may even offer to store it for you for a while...
GREASEMONKEY72 03-26-2007, 04:12 AM youre welcome
and i wasnt expecting to get them:hm:
ill trade you? ill even get the tires swapped for free...hahaha..jk
dsigh 03-26-2007, 08:33 PM Ok guys, thank you all for your inspiring words. This build just got a little more interesting. Today I picked up a '68 SWB with an inline six.
These pictures are from today's purchase.
Devin
GREASEMONKEY72 03-26-2007, 08:41 PM cool deal man, can wait to see what happens next
dsigh 03-27-2007, 04:22 PM This trailer look familiar?
GREASEMONKEY72 03-27-2007, 08:35 PM damn, that trucks nice, it didnt look that nice from the craigslist pics but now that you can actually see it, its a nice truck actually
powell72 03-27-2007, 11:47 PM That's one way to get a project moving faster. Looks good.
70rs/ss 03-28-2007, 02:13 PM Few more pics. I found some cheap rollers on Craigslist for the frame after I do the 5 lug conversion.
Those wheels are the cop car ralleys, from the 9c1. I have a full set, how much were they if you don't mind?
dsigh 03-28-2007, 04:52 PM $60 - off of Craigslist. :)
dsigh 04-19-2007, 01:53 PM I registered the truck today and put it in my name.
Good news: Black and Gold plates stay on the truck
Bad news: $524 to DMV in back fees from previous owner :dohh:
GREASEMONKEY72 04-21-2007, 01:04 AM I registered the truck today and put it in my name.
Good news: Black and Gold plates stay on the truck
Bad news: $524 to DMV in back fees from previous owner :dohh:
cool deal and bad deal all at once, but atlest you get to keep the black and gold plates:metal:
dsigh 05-24-2007, 02:03 AM Yanked my motor and tranny today, sold those both locally.
Below are some pics, including my driver's side bucket seat that I installed....
GREASEMONKEY72 05-24-2007, 02:17 AM cool front plate, love that steering wheel and where can i pick up a bucket seat as nice as that?
GREASEMONKEY72 06-06-2007, 04:17 AM just thought id give you a bump and see whats goin on???
dsigh 06-13-2007, 01:10 AM WAY too many things going on right now. We just had a baby arrive last week, see below. Everyone say hi to Billie Jean.
Sold my rear slider to a board member and am working on getting my buckets on a pair of tracks. Undecided about a motor, but am keeping my eyes peeled for a 700R4 at the right price.
I'll keep you posted..
GREASEMONKEY72 06-13-2007, 01:37 AM hey there she is, i always love the chocolate ones, if you end up comin down here like you were sayin are you gona bring her with you?
dsigh 06-27-2007, 10:38 PM Picked up a 327 this afternoon. 170K original miles out of a '68 Camaro (numbers matching car). $400 for this and it's now time for the strip down.
68chevy68 06-27-2007, 10:40 PM Someone gave me a 327 block with a steel crank a while back. Good luck with that. I would love to build mine.
GREASEMONKEY72 06-28-2007, 05:22 AM cool deal man, itll be cool having a 68 engine in a 68 truck but if its numbers matching why did he sell it? not restoring? and granted i have a 350 i like hearing 327 instead
WLPTMP 06-28-2007, 06:44 AM i dont know if you need a sandblaster but they make a attachment the pressure washer to use it as a sandblaster
dsigh 06-28-2007, 11:55 AM I'd love that blaster adapter! I need more info.
The guy decided to turn his Camaro into a "Pro-Touring" car. I'm really excited about the 327, my dad had one in his '40 Chevy coupe and it scooted. Quick pop out of the hole without having to rev the crap out of it for the power ban. Pics to come. First step is getting it cleaned and magged.
WLPTMP 06-28-2007, 05:35 PM do a search on yahoo
they are about $60-$100
MisterE72 06-28-2007, 05:48 PM That is one sweet 68. I see you convince the future wife that two trucks is better than one. Billie Jean is cute. I had a chocolate lab (Maximus). He tore up the backyard. He needed more attention and room. Gave him to a rancher friend with 250 acres of almonds. He's happier now.

Sales and Want to Buys limited to the Parts Board.
dsigh 06-29-2007, 01:41 AM This isn't a parts thread, it's a build.
SactoJim 06-29-2007, 02:15 AM I can relate to that getting married thing and paying for a wedding......and trying to get the truck done at the same time.....just not happening! Doing the deed (hitched) up in Tahoe next week 7-7-7 and hopefully the fires have calmed down by then.
Gotta love labs....I gotta 1 year old Black and they just love tearing crap up.....and he gets tons of attention and a couple trips a week to the American River.
Nice 68 project.....I had a 68 Camaro with a 327....great little motors. Looks like you are in my neck of the woods and thought I would say Hey.
68GMCCustom 06-29-2007, 02:21 AM This isn't a parts thread, it's a build.
sorry...thought you had mentioned in the thread that grill and some other parts being for sale, since you bought another truck.
GREASEMONKEY72 06-29-2007, 02:47 AM i got a buddy with a 61 impala with the original 327 and 4spd, put in hei and a eddy carb and he says it hauls ass
cant wait to see more progress, dont forget to post some pics of that engine
dsigh 07-06-2007, 10:41 PM Pulled the bed today, really could have used the one man lift that Kevin of LFD has designed!
GREASEMONKEY72 07-10-2007, 12:39 AM live Fast, die Fun
GREASEMONKEY72 07-12-2007, 01:46 AM so wheres the pics of that engine eh?
dsigh 07-12-2007, 02:11 AM Did you move to Canada from Bakersfield?
I'm working on the bed right now. The motor is at a friend's shop, won't have pics for a couple of weeks.
GREASEMONKEY72 07-12-2007, 02:54 AM nah im still here in bakersfield eh
Scott68-93-97 07-12-2007, 04:57 PM Nice build, about that power washer sand blasting attachment heard it works good on frames but its a little tough on body panels, if you try it let me know how things turn out
Scott
Palf70Step 07-12-2007, 05:46 PM Here is one I found. I had never heard of one before you folks mentuioned it and now I am curious.
http://www.ultimatewasher.com/sandblaster.htm
Scott68-93-97 07-13-2007, 10:15 AM The best thing about them is no need for a shop to to it in, no mask needed, no dust in the air, and no problems with enviroment, all the sand falls right below the truck sweep it up when it dries and reuse
dsigh 07-25-2007, 01:56 PM Not too many updates on the truck, but the backyard is coming along...
GREASEMONKEY72 08-11-2007, 04:16 AM thats alota dirt, rc jumps? to bad im not closer
dsigh 08-14-2007, 01:24 AM 30 yards filled, another 25 to go. 145 8" keystone blocks down, another 85 to go. My back and checkbook are shot.
GREASEMONKEY72 09-13-2007, 03:58 AM whatcha got?
dsigh 10-21-2007, 09:47 PM I sold the project this afternoon. Now looking for the next one...
