View Full Version : thinking of buying '05 crewcab
project1971 01-28-2007, 12:22 AM My wife and I are looking at a '05 crewcab 1500. Anything i should look for problem wise? I have see the posts about the cluster issues, anything else? If we get this we will be getting ride of the Tahoe and her Honda. Trans is going out in the Honda and I really don't want to deal with it! Thanks in advance!
turbochevy 02-01-2007, 01:17 AM Not one problem with mine....infact its an 04 and I am looking to sell it. LOTS of extras if you are interested.
jsbgump 02-01-2007, 10:04 AM I have a 06 GMC CC and love it. Just over 4000 miles on it now so now problems other than a defective wiper motor switch.
odie82 02-01-2007, 10:00 PM I have a 06 also, 2300 miles with no problems yet, only thing I dont like is the 3.42 gear ratio, doesnt fell as powerful as my old truck with 3.73
N2TRUX 02-01-2007, 10:44 PM I have an 05 2wd CC. I had to have the front brakes turned at 6k miles because the rotors were warped and had 1/4" wide grooves in them. I am at about 10k now and they need to be turned again.
I have a wonderful thumping sound coming from the steering culumn. I am not sure if it's the steering shaft slip joint that GM refuses to fix, or the uppper part of the shat that inside the cab.
What ever you do, don't get the 3.42 gears. This thing is slower than a squished turd once I put the 22's on it...:(

I'm glad I'm not the only one who had to have the rotors turned, I had mine done at 12k. I know I drive the doo doo out of it, but I usually get at least 30k out of most of my other vehicles. Don't complain about the 3.42s either, you could have 3.23s. :( N2TRUX, are those Eagle 026's? Look closely in the back of my truck and you'll see the 20s I just too off (way heavier than my new Gibbs).
Here's my progress on the '06...

N2TRUX 02-02-2007, 09:27 PM ....N2TRUX, are those Eagle 026's? ....Yep, that's them. I looked at a gazillion wheels and couldn't find anything I liked. The Eagles have been done to death, but they still look good.
I like your Gibbs wheels. You have any of the other accessories that went with that package?
71swb4x4 02-02-2007, 10:12 PM I have an 06 with 3.73's and I love it. The only thing I don't like is the payment. It will probably get sold soon. If I didn't have to make a monthly payment you would never be able to pry the keys from my hands.
project1971 02-02-2007, 10:53 PM Thanks for all the input guys! I think my wife wants a newer Tahoe, suits up better anyway. She wanted the 3rd row seat when i got the 98 but couldn't afford the new bodystyle at the time. Ah well I will keep mine until a good deal comes through the dealership that i can't refuse.

Nope, I just yanked them from a memeber on pt.net and tossed them on there, I do have a painted front bumper on the way though. It's my dd, I have my Camaros if I want to do anything remotely fun.

If you want an 01 GMC Yukon I know someone who has one. ;) It only has 2 rows of seats though.
boatpuller 02-04-2007, 11:58 AM i've got an 05 crew cab Z71 with every option out there and love it.as far as performance,i don't think they were designed to be as$haulers.it's the most comfortable "truck" i've ever owned.qoute on truck it's really a tahoe with a little bed.to me half tons are pickups.you need to get into 3/4 and up to be called a truck.
Jonboy 02-05-2007, 06:13 PM If you do get one, get the front buckets. There is a night and day difference in the 40/20/40 bench and the buckets. It also usually means Bose, too.
71swb4x4 02-05-2007, 06:32 PM I have the 40/20/40 and my dad has the buckets. Our drivers and passengers seats are the same. I prefer my 40/20/40's over his buckets. I love having that center seat to prop the guns against while we are hunting. They are nice when the wife wants to get close too ;)
N2TRUX 02-05-2007, 11:04 PM I searched specifically for a truck with the front bench. I haul my supplies for work in the bed and back seat. When I pick up my daughter from school she usually has a friend that needs a ride home. I would have to re-arrange everything is I had buckets. All I have to do now is flip the console up and we all fit...:)
kevinr1970 02-06-2007, 01:24 PM ...I do have a painted front bumper on the way though.
Are you having yours painted or buying the same one painted or ???
Crummy 02-06-2007, 03:33 PM Steering thump is easily fixed with the new tsb of "stroking the shaft up and down. Same thing occurs in the Tahoe. My wife just got an '05 Tahoe and is happy with it. I haven't had any issues with brakes on my Z71. Did a back check on warranty service and nothing.

I have another one, the grey is textured plastic and paint won't work unless you fill it and sand it. A new smooth cover was only $50, so I saved the labor and will just paint the new one.

I'd be interested is seeing that. I was going to have my bumper painted, but if its easier/cheaper to go the way your going I'll have to get some more info.
Also where did you get it from?
Tropical Snowstorm 02-07-2007, 05:31 AM I nabbed it off eBay, it is definately easier this way, and if you're patient it can be cheaper, just wait until you find a good deal. I'll throw some pics up in a couple of weeks when I get done.
71on20s 02-20-2007, 02:32 AM love my 06 crew cab doesnt have all that much power but its ok with me havent had any problems with mine except with the intermediate shaft under warranty so no problems

boatpuller 02-20-2007, 07:40 PM nice lookin ride.

I'm comparing this truck to my 04 Dodge Quadcab. Both of them are 1500s and the Dodge has much more of a "truck" suspension. The Dodge will run circles around this truck.
I know the 3.42's make it slower, but I think the Dodge would blow away GM trucks with 3.73's as well. GM Missed the target with the power band on the 5.3 in a truck.
It's a slow turd.....:(
71on20s 02-23-2007, 11:53 PM N2TRUX that thumping sound should be ur intermediate shaft i just replaced mine about a week ago under warrranty

your probably right the dodge will out run it.my point is,i didn't buy this truck with the notion that it was going to be fast.it doesn't even enter my mind when i drive it.to me it's not a performance vehicle it's about a quite comfortable ride for 4 adults.which in my opinion it does very well.i've owned lots of performance vehicles as i'm sure you have too.so to me,it's two different frames of mind when driving, two different based vehicles.i guess not everybody look's at like i do.that's what makes the world go round.:) by the way the 22's look awesome.i'm wondering if your overall tire dimension changed enough to affect anything.is it less responsive with the 22's?
dinnut 03-01-2007, 11:18 PM they can be decent performance trucks. i run an 03 chevy 1500 quad cab. but mine has heavy duty package (basically a 2500) with the 6.0l (5.3's bigger brother) lq4. 3.73's and a 4l80e. as soon as i bought mine i threw a custom tune on it, got a cold air intake, and dumped the exhaust. after i get the 383 running in my 70 im gonna throw some longtube headers, a bigger stall converter and a tr220 cam in it. the 6.0 in my truck will move. with my rev limiter set at 6k, i can hit 60 in first gear. 4l80e has long first gear. i can spin my 285's off the line.
love these trucks though. ive wanted one for awhile. finally got one a month of two ago.
kevinr1970 03-02-2007, 02:54 PM So is yours a 1500 but with 8-lug rims?
If so, what is "1500" about it???

odie82 03-02-2007, 05:08 PM he has the 1500HD
kevinr1970 03-03-2007, 03:00 AM But what I mean is, if it has HD suspension (I assume thats what the HD stands for), and 8-lug wheels, what about it is 1500?
Does it have a lower payload capacity or lower towing capacity or ???
What is the point of a 1500 if its for all intents and puposes a 2500?
Not arguing or knocking the truck just trying to learn.
dinnut 03-04-2007, 09:46 PM im not exactly sure why they built them. ford does the same thng with light duty f-250s. except those for reallyyyy ugly. i consider it a 2500 really cause there isnt much 1/2 ton about it like you said. might just be a cheapway to get a 2500? it doesnt sag with a decently loaded trailer so it can handle some weight.
anybody get the point of my truck. haha
Pyrotechnic 03-07-2007, 10:17 PM A regular cab shortbed with a 5.3 and 3.73 gears is damn fast. Dont expect a heavy crew cab to attain the same performance with that same setup though. Make sure you get the Vortec Max 6.0 and at least 3.73 gears, maybe even 4.10's. Can't expect to add that weight without penalty. For a crew cab, avoid the 4.8 at ALL COST. It's a 5.3 with a short stroke, in which case you would seriously need the 4.10 gears. The dealers and salesmen aren't going to make sure you get the fastest truck around. Make sure the things on the sticker sheet are performance oriented if that is what you're after. A performance tune for the computer and adjusted shift points and firmness for the transmission will do wonders as well.
