I just bought a new Dell and would like to transfer my favorites, e-mail contacts, etc from my old Dell to the new one.
Can I link these together through my router or something?
All this due to a new Ipod for my kids at Christmas that won't run on Windows ME! Good old snowball effect.........
Thanks,
Brian

Yes you can.
If the new computer is using XP, there is a really "easy" way to do this, but it requires that you have the Windows XP installation disc that should have come with your new Dell.
Do you have that XP installation disc?? If so, do this:
Follow this thread exactly (seriously), it will clean out any unnecessary crap like temporary files and stuff you don't want to transfer over - this will make the amount and size of files to transfer decently smaller: http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/showpost.php?p=1681268&postcount=4
Next, boot up the Windows ME machine, put in the XP install CD, and when the menu pops up, choose "Perform Additional Tasks". In the next menu (http://www.microsoft.com/library/media/1033/windowsxp/images/using/networking/expert/rdpclient02.gif), choose Transfer Files and Settings.
Walk through the process, choosing a folder on the Windows ME computer to transfer/save the files to. This is typically a no-brainer process.
Once done, all you need to do is "share" that folder on the Windows ME machine, copy it to your XP machine and you can use the "File and Settings Transfer Wizard" (aka F.A.S.T. wizard) on the XP machine to import all of the settings you saved. You will find this F.A.S.T wizard in the Start menu of the XP machine, under Programs -> Accessories -> System.
If this is not possible for me, let me know why :)

Thanks Shifty, I'll give it a go. I think I got the XP disc with all the other stuff.

Let me know if anything comes up. Using the first step to clean up and then save the data on the Win ME computer should be easy and self explanitory, I believe. The hard part will be transferring the 'saved files and settings' folder from the Win ME computer to the new XP machine (might be easier to burn it to DVD or transfer to a USB hard drive).
If I can assist in providing several suggestions on how to make it happen, or any quick questions (sanity checks) let me know.
