Like jegs or summit sells, a whole bunch of pipe and clamps and such, pick your own muffler, headers, etc

They look like a good idea, anyoen used one?

I've done one from scratch like you are talking about and another cat back kit from Flowmaster. I had previously done a Borla catback kit on my 99 pup. Then switched it to the flowmaster.

The Flowmaster was far superior to anything I either did from scratch or previous kits. Much easier too. Only dissapointment was the Flowmaster kit came with a 70 series and that I swapped out with a more melodious 40 series.

You can cheat at the Flowmaster kit if you want to. Go to their site and download the installation instructions for your make and model. Then order only the pieces you want as they give you the part number for each individual part. Then build as you want and order the muffler you want.

BTW for sound there is no equal to a system with a cat and a flowmaster 40 series.

I second that!!!

I don't think the kits are all plug and play. I think most make a standard extended cab/long bed length, and then you need to cut it down right. The prices are usually pretty good though.

My recommendation is to really consider a local exhaust shop. Usually $250-300 will get you a custom fit, custom exit exhaust with your choice of muffler and exhaust tip. You can't beat an exhaust that is built FOR your truck, vs. a universal set that covers a 10-year spread and doesn't compensate for any mods you have made to your truck. Not to mention the fact that the only work you do is drop it off and sign the work order!

All of that together to me is worth the extra cost over a $175 'kinda universal' off the shelf exhaust.

I thought about the do it yourself kit but ended up going with an Edelbrock cat back system. I had always heard horror stories about kits in general not fitting. I was totally surprised how well the kit fit and went together. I did it by myself in my driveway in 45 minutes. Sounded and flowed awesome!!!
I think it was like $269.00. You'd probably pay much more than that to have an exhaust shop fab you one up and it wouldn't be 100% mandrel bent tubing utilizing factory hangers.

Hey everyone,

I have considered the muffler shop route, as I have several times bejore, but the shops around here are fairly pricey! and seeing as I have a nice shop to work in I try to do everything my self (like the blower motor that I'm tryin to replace now  ) so today I crawled under the truck and found that I have 3 inch the whole way back... so I'm gonna just replace the crappy lookin muffler! (thin... restrictive... yuck) Any suggestions other than the Flow? I've heard good and bad things about them. Convince me :D

Oh, and it has a new cat, one of them mini jobbies I think its somewhat straight thru.

Thanks!
