Do tailgates have VIN #s stamped anywhere on the outside or inside of them.. this would be on a 94 Sierra. My freinds got stolen while the truck was parked in the drive way for the night and he thinks he foun d it riding around on another truck :cuss: :cuss: :cuss:

I do not think so. If they do, I have never heard of it or seen it.

I've only seen it one newer trucks. My bosses 05 has something like a VIN. But never seen it on an older truck.

So what good is that going to do you? I don't see a lot of checking of parts for VINs in this situation. The answer is to stop the theft in the first place.

No offense peaiceparts but yeah if he could of he would have. The truck was in a driveway for the night and the next morning the Tailgate and rubber bed rug were gone. If there was a Vin # on the gate then he could prove it to be his and get it back. Nothing like good old Proof to change someones mind.

Also I had never heard of a gate getting stolen before he told me his did. I guess around here they are too dented up for people to want to steal?

Tailgate theft is very common because they are easy to take and worth a quick $100. Mine has some nice trailer rash on it so I don't have to worry about it getting stole.

Not offended, BUT if there was a VIN #, then what? You have to catch the thief first and there is very little return for your money on stolen parts. IN OTHER WORDS--unless Mr. Policeman (so well paid that they are) just happens to get into a situation that he Just happens to find a tailgate that Just happens to appear to not match what it is on, then he might take the time to check for a VIN #. GOOD STINKIN LUCK there. What are the odds. I bet not much, even in small towns. Something like that will not be in your neighborhood long. This is on the same basis as the gun that was stolenout of my Son's house, it was never recovered and the serial numbers are still hanging on my refrigerator.

As for stopping the thief, look at putting something around that hinge point that will slow the little b&$*@$s down. How about something as simple as a hose clamp and then fudge up the drive nut or slot. It will slow them down and make them earn it by having to get tools.

I think the guy knows where the tailgat is- or thinks so anyway- but needs a way to prove it like a special marking orrr a vin.
That is what the post sounded like to me

Yeah again peice parts i agree and normally i would say the same but my freind found the gate! and it is sitting on a work truck that belongs to the school he attends! What are the chances?? I think he wants it back because it rightly belongs to him.

Just take it back if he is sure it is his! But only if he is real sure.

The SCHOOL, man who is teaching our people these days. If it is a school, then they should have a receipt, if not, then he owns them and the tailgate. However, if you want numbers on everything, then get out an engraving tool.

I am just here to tell you that in m ost cases, it won't come back and he would not have a clue as to where it is.
