I stopped by Best Buy yesterday to look for a basic computer and all of them have the new Vista OS on them. The guy helping me told me to wait a few months for the bugs to be worked out of Vista:no: . I "really" want to get one now. What should I do?

The last bug is fixed when the last customer dies. I've been running Vista Enterprise for a few months now with no issues and IMHO (biased) it's a solid release.
Run the Vista Advisor before deciding anything :) To use all the features it does take a fairly recent machine, more graphics ability than mainstream and as always with Windows more memory is good :) 1G is a minimum IMHO.

Bill, I'm looking at buying a brand new machine that is already loaded with Vista. The guy at Best Buy advised me to wait a few months but I need a new computer now.

Get a new computer now, and I don't recommend buying one from a retail ouotlet like Best Buy or similar because THEY ARE IDIOTS.
Almost all computers can be bought now with XP and come with a free upgrade certificate to Vista (some flavor thereof). If they do not offer this, go to a reputable company - if you absolutely must buy locally, please go to your local Gateway store. If you are going to buy online, I suggest using Dell.

Running Vista Ultimate at home, Vista Enterprise at work - I love it. :) Best Buy Blue Shirt guys are a 50/50 shot at whether whomever you talk to has any real experience worth listening to or not.

i second the gateway store option//when i went to buy i found the package store guys couldnt answer the most basic of questions, and as a real computer idiot the gateway people had a lot more knowledge for me to make a computer that fit what i needed to do

I've never seen a local Gateway store around here but I'll check their website. Should I totally avoid buying a computer with Vista already installed?.

General advice across the industry is to wait for the ".01" release or the first service pack. I wouldn't say that there won't be fixes needed ("Patch Tuesday" has already had exploits fixed) but I've found Vista so far to be clean and stable on the right hardware. I wouldn't wait.

I agree with Bill on this one. If you aren't tech savvy, or you have lots of software apps you're going to want to continue using, or if you use a bunch of USB devices and other hardware attached, then don't go for it.
It took XP about 6-8 months before all of the driver issues were ironed out.
I think getting a computer with XP and a "free upgrade" certificate is the way to go.
