"Cheaper" is not always "better". In fact, Sony, HP and Compaq are name brands that often put out utter turds for computers. Regardless of WHAT you buy, make certain of a couple things: ALWAYS buy at least a 3yr warranty with the computer, REGARDLESS. Don't buy a computer with a Celeron processor. If buying a laptop, go big - it's nearly impossible to upgrade it later. Don't skimp on memory (RAM) - Always get at least 512MB of RAM - XP and Vista only operate decently with 512MB. Vista won't operate worth a damn with less than 1GB (1024MB). I'm in the tech industry, have been for well over a decade. I swear by Dell products, I have been using them for ~7 years, all the while trying out other brands, without satisfaction. 80% of my support services outside the office are on HP/Compaq and Sony systems gone bad. I very rarely run across a busted Dell, and when I do, it's hardware related, usually from abuse (dead hard drive, dead screen, common laptop problems). The other 20% of computers I find out in the wild having problems are Dell, IBM and Gateway. Gateway is also incredibly reputable. IBM is going downhill after selling their name out to Lenovo, I expect to start seeing a lot more systems from them needing repair in the coming year or two. Dell's new "dual core" systems are superb. We have at least 30 of them between the two offices I'm head of IT for.
