View Full Version : 67 SWB Crewcab....Building the Beast, aka Donkey!
Hart_Rod 05-12-2007, 11:02 PM Finally got the rear section for the crewcab. I bought a complete truck (minus bed) from OHJOE. After striping the truck down to the chassis, I wacked it off in front of the front cab mounts. Next week we will sandblast it and paint it. Hopefully next weekend, I'll get all the measurements laid out for a 45 degree cut and then get it welded back together. :metal:
seanu 05-12-2007, 11:11 PM Cool Rob, glad you found your other half..lol....
Hmmmm...hard to tell from the photos..but is that a 5 lug rear?;)

The turning radius is going to to crazy as it is, plus I really like the looks with a SWB.

Mike, come on down! Always glad to talk cars and trucks. Bring the truck with you, :) . The front part of the frame came from a LWB and the rear is from the swb I got from Joe. I'll post some more pics next week on how I put it all together. TTYL.

Hart_Rod 05-13-2007, 01:47 PM What do you guys think about this for a bed? Project 67 Sub photo shopped this:
http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/showthread.php?p=2172225#post2172225
Yukon Jack 05-14-2007, 11:33 AM Looks like a cool project to me!
jsbgump 05-14-2007, 11:38 AM That would be a neat and differen't touch
BACKYARD88 05-14-2007, 11:51 AM Looks good from the side but I'm afraid it might look a little too "big" from the back. Maybe not but just something to think about.
68GMC454 05-14-2007, 03:17 PM ok,,i just got one thing to say about the bed idea,,,,,,just do it..looks sweet...
abebummy26 05-15-2007, 05:21 PM Ok stupid question I know every one likes to build the crew cabs out of suburbans and everything why don't they just take on the big truck cabs ie 1&1/2 ton or bigger that has 4 doors from this vintage and put it on a different frame extended of course I think that would be easier than making one out of a suburban i understand that the doors are the regular long ones but still wouldnt I realize this truck is not a suburban cut down but i just dont get why not do it that way I guess a chopped suburban would be cool, but you dont have as much room in the cab I would assume as a big truck cab right? and I realize some people wouldn't like the looks of the full doors. but chopping a suburban and adding a rear cab piece sounds like more work to me than lengthening a frame. has anyone ever seen one like I am talking about or has no one ever thought of this before? I think it would be very cool to build hmm maybe I should have some one photo chop one? I really like your truck though it will be really cool when you get it done and sorry for crapping up your thread with my ranting.
texanidiot25 05-15-2007, 06:22 PM Because there were no crewcabs for the 67-72's. there all custom jobs done by a third part company, but not chevy. So their uber rare to find these conversions done originally back then. It just so happens suburbans have the pieces to make a proper looking crew cab.
Spray-Bomb 05-15-2007, 06:37 PM I think I like the bed
abebummy26 05-15-2007, 06:43 PM I know there were no crew cabs duh I'm not that dense. grr. Thats not what i meant.
texanidiot25 05-15-2007, 07:00 PM Sorry then, thats how your post comes out as
abebummy26 05-15-2007, 07:06 PM Yes I realize this truck is extremely rare, but what im saying is why not take a 67-72 c50 or bigger cab that already has four doors and put it on half ton frame rather than chopping up a suburban? and then extend the frame rails so you can use the stock bed (1/2) and not have to cut the floors inside the cab. do you understand what i am saying now?
texanidiot25 05-15-2007, 07:46 PM Now I do, I didnt know you meant those trucks.
Hart_Rod 05-15-2007, 10:12 PM Yes I realize this truck is extremely rare, but what im saying is why not take a 67-72 c50 or bigger cab that already has four doors and put it on half ton frame rather than chopping up a suburban? and then extend the frame rails so you can use the stock bed (1/2) and not have to cut the floors inside the cab. do you understand what i am saying now?
Mine is not a chopped suburban. It is a 2 door cab that was cut in half and 33" were added to the center. The rear doors are full size doors that have been cut down. Supposedly this was a GM prototype, :gi: but I can't prove it :whine: , so I'm going to build it they way I want :metal: .
Hart_Rod 05-15-2007, 10:17 PM Here's a couple of C50's
GREASEMONKEY72 05-15-2007, 10:35 PM you NEED to do the bed like that, you have no choice
but really that bed would look freakin sic on there
Hart_Rod 05-15-2007, 10:42 PM Here's a photoshop of a truck Carter Hickman did. I should probably see if he can put the two together.
abebummy26 05-15-2007, 10:47 PM yeah I know the history on your truck i read this thread fully and when the PO had it on his thread. Your's aren't the doors I'm talking about. I have seen a few on ebay that are full doors uncut and it was factory on a C50 or 60 cant remember it was definitely full doors with angled part where the door comes down I dont know how else to describe it it looked right to me (as in stock). gosh darn i wish i could find a pic of it
Hart_Rod 05-15-2007, 10:52 PM Are you talking about this?
abebummy26 05-15-2007, 11:01 PM basically yeah but on a bigger chassis C50 or bigger to me that one I can tell it was a conversion the one I'm talking about looked more refined almost. The picture of the truck you posted on the panel in between the 1st and second door looks really goofy not factory this truck was much easier on the eyes to look at but it could be one of these but I really dont think so the truck I am talking about even had the drip rail all the way around but the only reason I remember that is cuz the top was white like the two tone trucks. I'm 75% sure that this was not a conversion it looked to nice to be.
abebummy26 05-15-2007, 11:06 PM I'm sure with all the other guy's on this forum who watch ebay like hawks somebody will have at least saved a pic of it If only I would have It was on ebay last summer or the summer b4.
grebus1 05-16-2007, 12:56 PM Here are a couple pics from different silver books. The first shows how the '60-'66 models were converted to crew cabs. The other pic shows both a light duty and a medium duty crew cab (with doors open)--both appear to be based on the same style.
that's friggin awesome, is that original,or a fab? can't wait to see it done, rock on
Hart_Rod 05-19-2007, 09:06 PM Got the chassis put together today. Just need to add the ECE frame stiffeners and a CPP bolt in C-notch. Then I can transfer over the the suspension components and the engine and tranny.
NOTE: I used these two links for reference and decision making. One is a stepped cut, the other is 45 degree cut.
Stepped:

45 degree:
http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/showthread.php?t=232149
.
Hart_Rod 05-19-2007, 09:08 PM Some more pictures and I added an ECE rear crossmember while I was at it.
Hart_Rod 05-19-2007, 09:11 PM Shortened it 20" from the original chassis that I got, but it's still 17' 9" long! We had a few parts left over.:o
SCOTI 05-20-2007, 01:37 AM Why not just re-use the discarded section of frame vs. paying for the ECE reinforcements?
Slice it down the middle (lengthwise) to remove some height so it will just fit inside the trucks frame @ the splice. You could either weld it in or bolt it in on the top/bottom of the framerail like a trailing arm c.member.
GREASEMONKEY72 05-20-2007, 04:19 AM good progress

I didn't have a long enough piece left to do that. Plus, I'm lazy. .
Hart_Rod 05-22-2007, 10:51 PM Gotta little grinding done on the frame. I also installed the drivers side c-notch. This is way easier than trying to do it on completed vehicle :metal: .
EDIT: Used this as reference for the C-Notch install
http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/showthread.php?t=195566
Hart_Rod 05-23-2007, 11:08 PM Got the passenger side C-notch cut out and mostly bolted in. When I did the c-notch on the Suburban, I made a template for marking the cut. For whatever reason, I kept it, which has made this somewhat easier.
Hart_Rod 05-25-2007, 10:42 PM Got the ECE plates welded in. I welded them top and bottom along the frame rail and then I drilled holes on the top and bottom and plug welded them. I don't think she's gonna bend, . I radiused (sp?) both sides of the strengthening plate to help clean up the looks and add a little bit of flex. It also matches the ECE tranny mount.
Hart_Rod 05-25-2007, 10:45 PM I also put exhaust cut-outs in the crossmember that the trailing arms attach to.
NOTE: I used this as reference for the exhaust cut-out install.

SCOTI 05-25-2007, 10:58 PM Nice. . .....
onetonk5 05-25-2007, 11:05 PM Are the angle on the notches opposite of each other? Looks like it in the pics.
Why not do a round notch to match the axle?
68 P.O.S. 05-25-2007, 11:39 PM Looks like it really coming together. Nice work.
Hart_Rod 05-26-2007, 08:27 AM :) Nice. . .....
Thanks man!

It looks funny because of the way the frame is shaped. I could have done the round notch, but I've used the bolt in notches before and it's pretty simple. My goal was to have the frame complete and bolted together in 2 weeks. I've got 6 days to go............
Looks like it really coming together. Nice work.
Thanks! When ya driving your truck up?
Rokcrln 05-26-2007, 08:47 AM Dang your not done yet:rolleyes: I think if you had gone with the blue see-thru tool box you would have been done two days ago! LOL
Hay that is turning out real nice, do you have a finished rendition of the over all look?

Professional grade, :). I'm kinda slow,. I guess if you add in the 3 months of planning, it really took longer. I've not decided on a theme yet, but was thinking something simple as this will probably be my "shop" truck. I wasn't even going to do this much, but the engine and drivetrain were to good of a deal to pass up. I'm going to get it to a roller and then shove it in my garage until I finish the Suburban. I should have all of this done, :alky:, before I leave for New Mexico this fall.................:haha: :haha:
Rokcrln 05-26-2007, 09:38 AM We are too much alike! Start one project, slide over to another only to push it aside to go back to another one for abit. If we just stayed focused on one at a time they would all get done much faster. Well that is what the wife keeps telling me and she is almost always close to being right;)
I would love to find a motor set up like that for Low Buck once the low buck build is done and I turn it into my shop/play toy. The motor in their now is a new crate motor but their is nothing like a factory EFI motor and AOD. Even when you have two 300hp motors side by side and one is carbed and the other is EFI the EFI motor always feels like it has 20% more power:)

That's the kiddy box I get to use. This is my buddy's tool box.:metal: I got the other exhaust cut-out welded in and both sides of the frame completely welded up.
Hart_Rod 05-26-2007, 09:32 PM I also added an ECE hidden hitch while I had it flipped over (it sure is easier to drill from the top than the bottom!). Then we bolted it to the rotissierre so we can shoot a couple more coats of POR15 on it tomorrow. We had to add an extension to get it to fit. When we pulled it in the booth, it wouldn't fit so we had to take the front part of the rotissiere off. Looks like we'll be painting it in pieces,.
Palf70Step 05-26-2007, 10:43 PM I need to get me a bigger welder. :D
That is some great work Rob!

Shoot, I don't know man. With gas prices and that "new" 3:73 I'm a little afraid to drive over there. I'll have to do that some time though.
ChevyDude 05-27-2007, 10:50 AM GREAT JOB!!!! I'm sure this Crew truck is going to be awesome, I'm tuned in and watching!!!

I'm sure you'll need to make another parts run, :). Just think how much more fun you are having with those 3.73's! :burnout: (Well at least half of that, :D).
GREAT JOB!!!! I'm sure this Crew truck is going to be awesome, I'm tuned in and watching!!!
Thanks, it seems like I have progressed farther on this in the last 3 months than I have on the suburban in the last year, . Soon as the chassis is bolted together, back to the Burb.

Yeah, I'm fine with the running a peg leg for now. I wouldn't mind getting a hold of a posi though. He,y if you got one available, there's that parts run.
67ChevyRedneck 05-28-2007, 08:37 PM Holy crap, nice work on the frame! How in the world are you doing the Burb AND the truck? My truck could use a refresh....... :D

Sorry, Eric no posi's, :( . I'll keep looking though.

GREASEMONKEY72 05-29-2007, 09:21 PM even more good progress, cant wait to see this thing done
ive got a pegleg and i can do donuts just fine..........in the dirt
Hart_Rod 05-29-2007, 10:58 PM Took the chassis home this weekend and finished putting it together. It barely fit on the 10' trailer but it made it. We put it in the garage next to the "donor" chassis and started swapping everything over.
Hart_Rod 05-29-2007, 11:00 PM Here are some pics:
Hart_Rod 05-29-2007, 11:03 PM Only a few things left:
finish hooking up the brake lines
I'm probably going to have to install a shock relocator kit
install carrier bearing and drive shafts
and I may change the motor mounts.
Not to bad for a week's work, :D. Now, if I could make the same progress with the Suburban, :o , :) .
GREASEMONKEY72 05-30-2007, 12:11 AM lookin good:cool:, you gona run those rallies or different wheels?
Hart_Rod 05-30-2007, 10:43 AM lookin good:cool:, you gonna run those rallies or different wheels?
I had thought about running some 20's and 18's, but I kinda like the looks of the ralleys. I may run them for a while, :) .

That truck rocks, :metal: , I hope mine ends up half that nice!
Here's some more pictures of it completley stripped. It's got some "bruises" and some rust that will need fixed. I was cutting the holes for the a/c vents in my suburban and decided I might as well do the CrewCab while I was at it. Economies of scale, I guess, :).
Palf70Step 06-20-2007, 08:17 PM Both are looking good Rob. It amazes me how much you are getting accomplished on 2 at the same time
I feel  with my slow pace.

Economies of scale! Actually, the move is forcing/motivating me to get certain stuff done before I leave. I have to stop and remind myself some times that it's a marathon, not a sprint.
Frizzle Fry 06-20-2007, 11:58 PM You have a 64-66 too?
thisolechevy 06-21-2007, 06:21 AM WOW...I am speechless!! you are my hero, I love the crewcabs and you are getting so much accomplished so quickly!!!!

No, the yellow truck belongs to a good friend. Although if I ever find the right fleetside..........!!!!!!!!
WOW...I am speechless!! you are my hero, I love the crewcabs and you are getting so much accomplished so quickly!!!!
YOU DA' MAN!!!
Thanks, quite a bit of planning went into this before I ever started, which has allowed it to progress to this point.
ROB, just a little more progress and I will have to ask for my truck back...
It's come quite a ways since you last saw it following that "Lil" red Explorer, :D.
Did some rear suspension upgrades tonight. I added ECE shock relocators and their super track bar setup. The spring setup on the original chassis was a 2/4, but I'm thinking with the weight of the CrewCab, it will end up closer to 3/5. Figured I might as well relocate them while it was "easy" to get to.
Hart_Rod 06-22-2007, 11:20 AM Since this has evolved into a "build thread", I guess I need a cool name like all the other ones. Or is that :me: Anyone got some good ideas? 4DooRRestore? 67 QuadCab? QuadZilla? 67 MegaCab? Six7CC?............:help:
67ChevyRedneck 06-22-2007, 11:49 AM When she's done, the plate needs to read "DONKEY"
