I recently purchased a Linksys PSUS4 USB print server/4 port switch. I just installed it and my primary (shifty built PC) prints fine but my laptop is a no-go. I get a pop-up window that reads 'collecting printer status' and nothing happens. I have the laptop connected to the docking station and it is directly connected to my router. Any suggestions?

Can you tell me what process you followed to add the printer to the laptop?

I installed the printer drivers (Canon MP830) and then the drivers for the print server. It's recognized under the printers and faxes tab and indicates 'ready' status.

Is the firewall turn "on" on the laptop?

I tried it both ways. . .

sometimes you have to go to "Printers and Faxes" and add a new Network printer and THEN install the printer drivers

Seriously, I typically just do this:

Remove any previous instance of the printer.

Browse to the printer server in file explorer using the address \\whateveryounamedyourprintserver

Right-click the printer and choose "connect". Printer should auto-install if drivers are present.

Thanks--AGAIN!

I think it's a different process. Using my method, it's not required to enter the control panel for the add.

I find that browsing directly to a network printer, right-clicking it in the share and choosing "connect" is a much easier process for most users to handle. If you are able to browse to it, AND able to connect, then chances are, the permissions are going to be correct for you to spool and print using it.

I think Microsoft needs to work on the "add printer" functionality, because it usually ends up causing more confusion for users than anything.

Nah, it will be another 8-10 months before I take that plunge. . .
