View Full Version : "One really slow build" thread
Spray-Bomb 03-10-2007, 12:46 AM His guys,
This is my 67 LWB, that I am currently trying to get on the road (soon to be a daily work-horse)
I am on the tail end of installing a freshly rebuilt 350 & a good used 400 trans
So far the only customization is we have extensively modded a 84 Chevy tilt column to fit
The future holds air-ride suspension & a whole lot a other stuff I haven't thought of yet
Today I started to install a 98 Chevy rear bench seat (came out of my dads 98 4 door), so I thought I'd share pics (it's so nice having a seat that flips forward) One thing I don't like about it is that it's too tall IMO, but the stock one was about the same (some day I'll chop the mounts down)
The front holes lined up really close (just had to pry a little to get one of the bolts in), now I need to drill new rear holes & weld a nut to a big washer or piece of metal then weld that to the bottom of my cab that way it's like factory

Spray-Bomb 03-10-2007, 12:51 AM Today I also started building a new cross-member for the trans, so it won't be such a butt to run my exhaust
I built this one in hopes that I would have enough clearance, but may have to build one out of tubing so that I can bend it to have even more clearance
I used a piece of C-channel I had laying around & a little angle, all thats left is to drill holes & paint it

GREASEMONKEY72 03-10-2007, 02:42 AM the seat fits nice, and that cm will deffenitly be strong..haha
Spray-Bomb 03-10-2007, 10:15 AM Yeah, I tend to over build a little
Palf70Step 03-10-2007, 10:21 AM looks good. This seat are great for these trucks. Really slow build sounds like my truck project too. Nice work on that cross member!
Spray-Bomb 03-10-2007, 10:32 AM Yeah, I might could get some stuff done if I would just clean the shop
I'll prolly clean it a little today
It's a 35 X 60 and you couldn't even walk in it the other day till I cleaned it up some
Has anybody ran the Cherry Bomb Extreme mufflers ????????
Spray-Bomb 03-10-2007, 10:36 AM I also changed out my steering-wheel yesterday, just gotta get the horn working
http://i81.photobucket.com/albums/j223/903262/Bad%2067/2007_02170017.jpg
Sorry for the crappy pic
dan42 03-10-2007, 10:47 AM That '98 seat is about as good as it gets for those trucks - very comfortable and look nice, but a little hard to find.
Spray-Bomb 03-10-2007, 10:54 AM Lucky for me, my dad does construction and removed his rear seat so he could haul more tools
I was gonna put it in my 54 ford, but that project is on long term hold
It was really nasty from sitting outside in the 54, so it took awhile to clean
Here's my buddy Scott, we did our own "Simple Green" commercial

jay-dawg 03-11-2007, 01:15 PM yeah you did. It's called surveying and planning! lol. Nice!
Spray-Bomb 03-11-2007, 11:44 PM I didn't have much time at the shop today, but I'm almost ready to put in my X-member I built
I got the old one pulled out & the holes drilled in my new one, now I need to test fit it and drill the holes in the frame then paint it and put it in for good
I didn't have time to get pics, but should tomorrow
Spray-Bomb 03-12-2007, 10:22 PM Well here is an update
I didn't get out to the shop till late (again), but I did get some stuff done :metal:
I wanted to convert my truck to cable throttle instead of the old linkage stuff
At first I was just gonna buy one of Jegs throttle plate thingys (till I found out that they're $80 bucks  ) so today I decided to make one :metal:
I took a sheet of steel sheet that I had lay'n around & took the throttle mount thingy from a 73 parts truck that has a BOP engine in it
Anywho you get the picture, So now I have to figure out how to convert it to swing-pedal :barf:
I have to get a new trans mount, then I can finish my custom X-member

Next project is to install the rear bumper, but first I have to relocate the big A gas tank

Sorry but uh I only get the red X's. :(
Spray-Bomb 03-12-2007, 11:04 PM Hmm, thats weird I've never had anybody have a problem with my pics
Here is a link the the PhotoBucket page they're on
http://s81.photobucket.com/albums/j223/903262/Bad%2067/
Spray-Bomb 03-13-2007, 07:52 PM Ok, made a little more progress today :metal:
I got my trans X-member almost bolted in (gotta drill holes in the frame) woulda had it in but some of the PO's (previous owners) drilled / torched a bunch of holes in the area I need to drill
So I plan to weld these holes up so that it's not so week
I also got my throttle plate finished (just had to trim the edge & bolt it on)
:blah: On with the pics
Old P.O.S. X-member

Spray-Bomb 03-13-2007, 07:53 PM I also started my swing pedal conversion, but ran into a snag, the trans I'm running is a 400 so it has kick-down switch
Well the swing setup I'm using is off of an early square-body & has the switch mounted to the plate that holds the pedal on & when you bend the pedal arm over so that it'll align with the cable it hits the switch
So I bent the switch bracket over, & it worked (so I thought) but when I got it over to the truck I realized that it wouldn't work because the pedal arm wasn't even close to the switch
So I will have to either build a new switch bracket, pedal rod, or both :whine:
Oh yeah, I also had to cut the top off of the bracket
http://i81.photobucket.com/albums/j223/903262/Bad%2067/2007_02210012.jpg
http://i81.photobucket.com/albums/j223/903262/Bad%2067/2007_02210013.jpg
Spray-Bomb 03-13-2007, 07:57 PM Has anybody else done the conversion, with the switch for the 400
Also, what do you do for where the cable comes through the fire-wall (it has a square hole & I don't have a drill-bit that does those)
I was just thinking about taking a hole-saw to my parts truck & cutting out the square hole ?
Spray-Bomb 03-14-2007, 06:41 PM Well I didn't do anything today... again
But my buddy Scott was over & was dig'n through my glove-box (for no apparent reason  ) & found this sweet air-cleaner nut

jay-dawg 03-14-2007, 10:04 PM Sweet!
Spray-Bomb 03-25-2007, 12:05 AM I got my new mufflers in... Woo Hoo !!!!
3" Cherry Bomb Extremes
I think that they should powder coat these, just like they do their glass-packs
So I painted mine, then took a Sharpy to the letters

Spray-Bomb 03-27-2007, 10:40 AM It's alive !!!!!
Well I made some progress, I got it fired off for the first time :metal:
Got the front sat back on, almost done with the swing pedal, & finished the cable throttle
I went to a buddys place to get some parts before he crushed out, & got some sweet electric fans that'll be installed in a "weekend" project :metal:
Man it just does something to ya to here a V8 thumper with open headers :metal: :metal:
:blah: Ok, on with the pics

Spray-Bomb 03-27-2007, 10:41 AM Ok, now for some questions
My radiator looks to me like it's a little narrow, is it ?
http://i81.photobucket.com/albums/j223/903262/Bad%2067/2007_03060007.jpg
http://i81.photobucket.com/albums/j223/903262/Bad%2067/2007_03060008.jpg
Next question is, was there a option for "wide" wipers or something
Cuz there is that other hole next to the pass wiper, that looks like it's for a wiper shaft ?
http://i81.photobucket.com/albums/j223/903262/Bad%2067/2007_03060009.jpg
GREASEMONKEY72 03-27-2007, 11:01 AM love the mufflers:metal: did you get them straight from cherry or what? and i think im going to use those on my truck instead of flows
Spray-Bomb 03-27-2007, 12:09 PM I went with the Cherry's cuz everybody & there dog has Flows... Rolls eyes
These are the single chamber Extreme mufflers (they're race mufflers, so they should sound good) Hopefully the cops won't care (small town)
I got mine though Jegs, but I looked at a lot of different sites & all of them had the same price and most had free shipping
I'll have to look into it, but I'm pretty sure Cherry Bomb has a warranty that says "If you don't like the sound, cut em off and send em back" so thats another reason I went with em :metal:
I just can't wait till I get em on :metal: Prolly won't be much different than the open headers  :metal:
Spray-Bomb 03-27-2007, 12:53 PM I forgot to mention, that I found a Mallory Comp 9000 dizzy just laying outside at my buddys place but when I got it home the optical pickup was missing & it was already missing the cap
What are these things worth used, cuz new they're like $350
The parts to fix it are like $150 (unless I find some used ones) & I don't know if I could just get a good used one instead of fixing it or not
67ChevyRedneck 03-27-2007, 01:00 PM Don't know about the wipers, but yes, GM did have 2 different size radiators (width wise) for these trucks. Is your radiator a 2 core? I think the radiator you have was used on the I-6 trucks. The V-8 trucks got a wider radiator??? Or was it because of automatic vs. manual??? Anyway, yeah, there were different width radiators as well as 2, 3, and 4 core radiators. My truck used to have one like yours, but now it has the wider 3 core radiator. The moutning pads on the PS move over to the next holes. On the bottom, the mount has to be moved out and re-rivveted.
Spray-Bomb 03-27-2007, 01:06 PM Thanks for the rad. info
It doesn't matter much cuz I'm getting a 3 core later today
So all I have to do to put the 3 core in is move my mounts, not get different ones... Correct ?
67ChevyRedneck 03-27-2007, 01:14 PM Depends on what you have now. If you have a 2 row now I think the mounting brackets might be too narrow. The 3 and 4 row radiators use wider mounts.
Get 'er in and see how she fits :D
Spray-Bomb 03-27-2007, 01:25 PM Ok, I guess I'll find out
Thanks, Matt
BACKYARD88 03-27-2007, 01:46 PM Maybe the extra wiper hole has something to do with right hand drive trucks?

That is the Answer!!!!! :metal: European and Australian vehicles used that hole.
I'd love to find the motor and mechanisms to hook my wipers up that way. I think it would be neat.
I think 67redncek covered the radiator stuff. I knew there where some differences, mostly in the core thickness, but I do believe there may have been a length difference depending on what engine you got.

I'll let cha know when they're on, I'll have to figure out how to get a sound clip though :metal:
GREASEMONKEY72 03-28-2007, 01:32 AM cool deal
Spray-Bomb 04-09-2007, 10:25 AM Dude I love your avatar ^^^
Well, I haven't made a whole lot of progress but I'm soon to be finished
I got my 3-core rad & got the front end shimmed
Now I need to: fill some holes in my frame / drill new ones for my X-member, put my "new" rear yoke in, put the rad in, finish my swing pedal, exhaust, & put in my electric fans
Theres prolly more, but thats the most of it
I'm leaving today for work, & will be gone for a week (I don't want to go, but I need money)
So I will be done by the end of the month
Spray-Bomb 04-17-2007, 10:38 PM Well I got to work on my truck today
I got my 3-core rad installed & started on my electric fans
I plan to order the stuff to bag my truck this weekend... Gee I love having money to spend :metal:
On with the pics

Spray-Bomb 04-17-2007, 10:38 PM I built this a long time ago, but I don't thin I ever posted about it
It's a tray I built, cuz I was tired of dropping my tools through the "big hole"
I built it out of a big sheet of metal, I cut out of a van (I did all this with a grinder, a hammer, a vice, & some round bar-stock)
http://i81.photobucket.com/albums/j223/903262/Bad%2067/2007_04170010.jpg
Oh, & some pliers
RedZ71 04-17-2007, 11:17 PM can you show some more pics of the 98 rear seat? i need a new seat, and this has piqued my intrest!
Spray-Bomb 04-17-2007, 11:45 PM can you show some more pics of the 98 rear seat? i need a new seat, and this has piqued my intrest!
I fixed all the pics on the first page, so if you want any specific pics lemme know
I plan to section the seat frame, like 3-4 inches
I'm 6'-3'' & only have like an inch between my head and the top of my cab (not cool for bumps) So I'll post that up when I get around to it
MisterE72 04-17-2007, 11:49 PM Lucky for me, my dad does construction and removed his rear seat so he could haul more tools
I was gonna put it in my 54 ford, but that project is on long term hold
It was really nasty from sitting outside in the 54, so it took awhile to clean
Here's my buddy Scott, we did our own "Simple Green" commercial

We had already cleaned the back before I thought to get pics  but the pics don't really show how nasty it realy was :barf:
Amazing what a little (or a lot) of simplegreen can do. I say you you send them a bill because those pics there are a good advertisement.
Wreckless_71 04-18-2007, 02:29 AM The bombs should sound good behind that 350... I have a 350 with full length headers that bolt right onto dual glasspacks and chrome turndown tips. They're deffinitly loud! I think I'm gonna get some pipes bent to exit in front of the rear wheels...

I can't decide if I should run them outside the frame or not, but I'm gonna run em out in front of the rear wheels (But still be hidden)

Yeah, for real & they could give a lifetime supply for payment :metal:
Now if I could just get free tires... Hmms
Spray-Bomb 04-18-2007, 10:54 PM Got some more done today
Got the upper rad hose on (still working on the lower)
And started on my electric fans
There will be two (and this one is just mocked up)

Spray-Bomb 04-18-2007, 10:56 PM I also got my cowl grills in

And the motor for the bead-blaster came in... Woo Hoo :metal:
Wreckless_71 04-19-2007, 03:15 AM I can't decide if I should run them outside the frame or not, but I'm gonna run em out in front of the rear wheels (But still be hidden)
Do you have full length headers? My glasspacks run straight back... on either side of the Trans. Also you have to think about how low you're gonna go? my buddy had a '72 blazer that was slammed to the ground and had the chrome '67 corvette pipes along the cab back to the wheels.:c2: You should just run straight back until you get under the bed then turn 'em out toward the wheels. I don't know?... it's your call!
Spray-Bomb 04-19-2007, 10:10 AM If I do run them outside the frame, I'll cut a hole in the frame & put a piece of 1/4" pipe / box the inside (for the pipe to run through)
But I think I'm not gonnna run em outside, because of the extra work (I wanna get my truck finished)
Wreckless_71 04-21-2007, 09:19 PM Progress?
Spray-Bomb 04-21-2007, 10:01 PM Whats the meaning of that word ?
Spray-Bomb 05-11-2007, 02:53 PM Well I have decided to run a "normal" fan for a while, just to get my truck on the road
I went to a show with Tav the other night & just really wished I had my truck
I am getting really close, so I'm trying not to do anything I don't have to
Plus it'll give me little weekend projects to do
I have to finish my X-member install, hook up the drive shaft (and maybe have it cut down), do my exhaust, tweak my throttle peddle, put a new water pump on, & prolly some other things I'm not thinking of
Hope to finish soon :metal:
Spray-Bomb 05-17-2007, 10:48 AM Well I'm get'n close to be'n finished (is there such a thing  )
I changed out the leaky water pump & put on a "normal" fan
Mocked up my exhaust, so I could hear it (It sounds awesome :metal: )
But now the bad news
I was putting on my "new" rear yoke (that part went fine), but when I went to hook up the drive shaft I was tightening it up & one of the bolts snapped off in the yoke  :censored:
:blah: On with the pics
Old pump
