View Full Version : My 70 2wd Project begins!
I recently purchased this 70 2wd Blazer and over the past two weeks the rebuild has started. I am new to the Forum and i am loving it. This is my first truck/blazer build so i will probably be seeking advice often. Thanks:hiya:
Pop's72 05-14-2007, 08:53 PM :welcoem: and post some more pictures!
1LoC10 05-14-2007, 08:57 PM nice, I love the Blazers
Hart_Rod 05-14-2007, 09:02 PM Nice looking blazer! Should be a cool project.

bouncytruck 05-15-2007, 12:10 AM Welcome to the board and congrats on a fine purchase. What are your plans for it?
Yukon Jack 05-15-2007, 11:05 AM Welcome - another 2wd saved!!!
Honestly my plans were to have a simlar look as kyle4381, hope he doesn't mind. I had made most of the decisions before i saw his. I have a 6.0 and tranny (4l65E) out of an 05 yukon denali XL. Talking with porterbuilt about a dropmember now. I am looking at the new trailing arm rear kit offered by ART. They say it will work on a blazer. I would love some input on this?? Strong arms and bags on the front. Disc brakes all the way around. 20's of some kind. Tahoe seats, maybe from an 07. Not sure what to do about a top - soft vs smooth?? I will post pics as i go. Currently it is apart waiting on braces (per threads i have read) and then body removal and off to blasting!
LUV2XCLR8 05-15-2007, 04:12 PM :phat: and :welcome2: :hi2:
Big J 05-15-2007, 05:41 PM Yep, welcome to the best info. on the net......
Post up some more pics.... Together or apart, we like'em all.....
A Few More Pics - It comes apart!
Rokcrln 05-15-2007, 10:53 PM Welcome and for your first truck build you picked a great one for sure. I have had my 2WD Blazer for almost a year now and it is just sitting waiting for it turn in the shop.

72CSTC5 05-15-2007, 11:55 PM Welcome to the 2wd side of things.
Tom Vogel 05-16-2007, 10:57 AM Why would you replace the trailing arm suspension that came in the truck?
I am sure you have reasons, what would they be?
TIA, Tom
PS, welcome to the forum from a fellow 2wd owner.
i like the kit offered by ART - However i may use my trailing arms and their crossmember, c-notch and accesories?? I am up for suggestions. The trailing arm rear is a new project for me. Until now, most of my stuff has been cars (camaro's and mustang's) or new model leaf springs rides.
70rs/ss 05-16-2007, 12:59 PM Here is my question, why in the heck would you find a rare 2wd and hack it up? The reason I ask, is that for your above list of mods a more common 4X4 Blazer could be modded to fit your needs and the 2wd could survive as is? I am not an over spray 100 point resto freak, but I can appreciate the rare factor in a factory 2wd Blazer and think cutting one up is kinda sacrelegious. I have a line on a 2wd and would rather cut up my 4X4 to do a C notch and all the other stuff rather than molest a more valuable and highly saught after 2X? Heck I'll trade you my 4x for your 2wd, how's that sound?
lolife99 05-16-2007, 03:37 PM Welcome from another 2wd owner. Keep us posted on your progress. If you decide to sell for a 4x4 to hack up. Give me a call. I'd like to hack up your 2wd and save mine.
Rokcrln 05-16-2007, 04:59 PM Yep keep the 2WD and hack it up how ever you want! I would do some more checking into the trailing stock trailing arm set up because they are one of the best factory designed set ups out thier. I would change out your crossmember if you are wanting to go over 6" of drop in the back for ride height, C-notch it, shock relocator and panhard relocator. Then go with drop coil springs or air bags and you will be very happy. And yes go for the Drop member from Nate for sure!!

kyle4381 05-16-2007, 09:14 PM looks like a good start.

OK... yea, anything from ART is top notch. I have ART on the front and went with Early Classic Enterprises on the rear (airbags and trailing arm doublers etc) I only wanted a 4-6 drop because I have a high power drivetrain and am more interested in function than looks. If you want to use anything from Air Ride, you wont go wrong. Its just that the trailing arm suspension on these trucks is way hard to beat from a performance standpoint, and I didnt want to tinker with near perfection. I went with ART on the front because Early Clasic (which I have on the rear) doesnt make an airbag system for the front, but I liked the ECE rear airbag system on the rear so much that I wanted air on the front. Airbags are completely tunable and very performance enhancing... almost sounds like a contradiction in terms... Air-Ride Performance.... but it sure isnt!
72CSTC5 05-19-2007, 01:44 AM OOPS nobody told me that they were valuable. I already chopped mine up. Sorry.
I am trying to put together a pasts list. Can anyone recommend a place to get a new radiator shroud as well as some ther misc. sheet metal parts?
2wd k5s are valuable and rare models, But you need to get out of the ordinary to extraodinary, Hotrods are always modified completly transformed and they are the most valuable vehicles in the world ! so why not horoded a rare model truck?

atp-There are plenty of board vendors here, but the one that I would recommend would be Tim Christian. www.christiansclassics.com He is also close to you in East TN. So shipping will hopefully be a minimum.
Thanks - i have been on his web and have made an intial contact about parts.
72BLAZERDUDE 05-24-2007, 01:20 PM We can never have to many 2wd owners. Welcome. Keep us posted on your progress.
good, Call him if you need anything.
A few more pics...the last one is why I am a little behind!
I have also installed the ART rear trailing arm kit, replaced the "rust" and ordered a ton of goodies. I will post more pics ASAP.
Thanks Nathan (porterbuilt) for the dropmember - I'm lovin' it!
Looking great, and congrats on the little one.
jaros44sr 10-05-2007, 06:36 AM :cong:On the new baby, nice to see a new family starting

N2TRUX 10-05-2007, 09:35 AM WOW! You are ceartainly headed in the right direction now. That Porterbuilt Dropmember should get you a huge jump on getting the front on the ground. The C-4 stuff is just icing on the cake.
Congrats on the new addition....:)
crzngmychvy 10-05-2007, 11:57 AM Congratulations on the baby!
SLIMJIM 10-08-2007, 07:51 PM Glad to see you are taking care of my old blazer......looks like it will be one hell of a ride. Good luck. And congrats on the little one........

More progress.
I took the frame to Powder coated. Wheels arrived (pics to come).
I started cleaning and paint the 6.0 and started the dash. As you can see...
Ben IV 12-16-2007, 02:31 PM Looking great. How do you like that kobalt compressor? I bought the same model, just gotta get it wired up.
Hart_Rod 12-16-2007, 02:33 PM Thats a sweet looking chassis! What are the specs on the wheels??
Rob
Wheels are Foose Nitrous II's
Front 20x8.5
Rear 20x10 (5.5" BS)
Tires are BFG's 295.40's and 245.40s
porterbuilt 12-16-2007, 06:19 PM It's looking awesome Adam!:metal:
Thanks Nathan - The dropmember looks great powder coated. Thanks for sending the new bushings for the mounts!
jaros44sr 12-17-2007, 09:47 AM That project is going to be top shelf by the way it is starting out. Could you post up some close ups of the crossmembers you installed, when you get a minute. By the looks of the family you may not have many:lol:
Are you doing the sheet metal repair yourself, looks like your capable enough from your work on the dash
Here is a pic of porterbuilt's dropmember c4. It is a bad picture but all I have for now. I will take a load of pics once I install the wilwood brakes and shockwaves...
As for sheet metal work - no I can't do the quality of work this project deserves.
jaros44sr 12-17-2007, 12:41 PM That is a thing of beauty, much better look than the old stock stuff. Wish he was into 4X stuff...
65-72 chevytoys 12-19-2007, 10:51 AM THat last pic is just the trucks future owner. That looks great all powder coated and I love the wheels.
NEVERENOUGH 12-19-2007, 11:35 AM Wow cool project and it seems to be coming together quite nice. This is my ulimate dream cruiser.
Here's a better pic of the dropmember c4 with the shockwaves installed...
And the tank...
Does anyone think i will have any clearance issues??
72BlckButy 12-23-2007, 05:38 PM That thing is beautiful!!!!!
jaros44sr 12-24-2007, 01:49 AM Wow! that front susp. is super cool, really like all the alum. pcs., really grabs your eye. Nice work....J.

bowtieboy93 12-24-2007, 07:12 PM what wilwood disk brake kit are you using? I cant seem to find a 67-72 kit anywhere!

I am running c4 arms and spindle so i can run c4 brakes. The wilwood kit is for a c4.
However...they just released a wilwood kit for the rear of our trucks!!! Mine just got ordered!!
desertrat 12-25-2007, 04:15 AM Anyone know how to move this thread to the "builds and projects" section?
Personally I think you should keep this thread in the Blazer forum.
For the simple fact that it's easier for me to find and we don't get allot of action here anyways. But I'm probably being selfish:rolleyes:

Just a question as why not put the c5 or zo6 brakes on instead of the wilwoods? I like the wilwoods but they must have been expensive. Great looking project by the way and I am glad to see another hacking up a 2wd blazer:lol:
abadsvt 12-27-2007, 06:11 AM Man that thing looks SICK!!!!! Very nicely done! I am definately going to be watching this thread.

Retro68 12-27-2007, 06:23 AM Your frame mods look great. How about a tubular front cross support as well. If you are going to drop your engine lower you might need the clearence for the crankshft pully. Consider moving it forward in a more verticle position. Good luck.

I found a great deal on the Wilwoods on a Corvette forum and pulled the trigger. I am wishing I would have thought through it a little more now that I am looking at the matching kit for the rear $$. But you can't beat the look and performance of the kit...I think I am going to like it!!!

Porterbuilt's kit is designed to give clearance for the pulley...barely. The only clearance issues i "should" have are with the AC compressor which will need to be moved to the top. I may look into a smaller compressor and mods to the bracket like killer71 did. Setting to motor in is the next on the list so we'll see.
lolife99 12-27-2007, 07:43 AM Atp,... I am glued to this thread! Amazing work so far. Keep the pics coming. Just a question,... are your front rotors on the wrong side? Or is that the way Wilwood runs the holes and slots? Thanks.
I think you're right. I was so excited to be putting them on i must not have been paying attention.
FRENCHBLUE72 12-28-2007, 03:26 AM Looks very nice keep upthe great work and congrats on the new addition.

I live just outside of Charlotte in Matthews, NC. The Blazer is at a buddies shop 30 minutes away in Marshville, NC which happens to be the home of Randy Travis - or so the sign says!
blazerhelper 01-01-2008, 12:37 PM Looking real nice Adam. Its a work of art my friend you and who ever is helping you must know what you are doing.

Do you have the part #? Thanks,
Yes - the part number is 140-10093. Everyone you call will say it doesn't exist, it is that new, but if they call Wilwood with that number, they will price it. Wilwood told me they are ready to ship. When you get a price let me know and we can see what deals we can find.
68 short step 01-02-2008, 02:07 PM sweet thread, and blazer....you're doing a awsome job, keep it up and keep the pics comein..

Is the front backspacing also 5.5 ? The lip looks smaller
How about a few more full chassis pics. Maybe a good side shot. I love those wheels and have considered them for my project also.
slammed1 01-03-2008, 04:08 AM Very Good build thread,Im gonna watch this one close myself.
I test fit a 15x10 with 6" backspacing on mine and it looked like a little wider wheel tub would have made everything fit perfect. I am a fan of the Foose Nitrous wheels myself also, and like your fitament. I know who the frt suspension is from, but can you say which rear control arm crossmember you have? I may have missed it but didnt see it if so.
I have my 72 on a custom 5-8 suspension set up but it was done a ways before some of these companies like Porterbuilt and others had tubular parts like crosssmembers and such,so I am looking at options now.
The BS on the front wheels is 5.25. Porterbuilt recommended a BS to use with his dropmember and this was within range.
As for the rear kit - it is trailing arm kit from ART.
Thanks for all kind words...I love this stuff!

slammed1 01-03-2008, 06:04 AM The C4 frt crossmember has me thinking also because I know I can find a frt suspension set up for not too much $$$..........damn the choices now.
