View Full Version : Is there a beer that's similar to Corona, yet better tasting?
I just sat down to have a nice cold Corona with lemon and was wondering if there's a national beer that's better than Corona or if maybe a lime might make it better or ????
I use to prefer Pacifico over Corona but for some reason one day it just tasted awefull and I haven't been back since- too wheaty or something, I'm not sure. Anyway, what are your suggestions?
Btw, recently had a Shiner Bock again after not having been in Texas in years and really like it. Oregon didn't begin carrying Shiner Bock until about a year ago. Also, I like Guinness but only occasionally. Perhaps all this will help.
Moneypit 06-06-2007, 11:43 PM There is a beer that just came out down here and I have no idea where else it is being distributed or for how long, that might be what you are looking for. It is made by Miller Light and is called Chill. It is brewed to have a similar flavor of some Mexican beer(but they won't claim which one) with the lime brewed right into it. I tried a six pack even though it is outside my usual realm of taste. They weren't bad. Can't say they were great but I don't usually like fruit in my beer. Just my $.02
Shane 06-06-2007, 11:44 PM Try some Turbo Dog by Abita ... comes from Louisiana.
FleetsidePaul 06-06-2007, 11:46 PM I was going to suggest Shiner Bock but you beat me to it. have you tried Sapporo in the big bottle.
I mostly like Heineken, and Shiner, but my favorite is whatever you are buying.:)
Alexis 06-06-2007, 11:51 PM Modelo Especial (http://www.gmodelo.com.mx/eng/marcas/modeloesp.html) is better tasting imo. i think the clear bottle corona taste nasty.
FarmTruk 06-07-2007, 12:05 AM Try some Turbo Dog by Abita ... comes from Louisiana.
x2 on that recommendation. My favorite beer. It's a little tough to find here in NC. When I get a hankerin' for it, I have to go to a specialty beer distributor, as it's not carried in any grocery or conveinence stores I'm aware of.
Doesn't taste a lot like Corona though, at least to me
JHART 06-07-2007, 12:23 AM Corona blows .... when it comes to mexican beer this is where its at. Its called Sol .

FarmTruk 06-07-2007, 01:06 AM I just sat down to have a nice cold Corona with lemon...
Personally I don't think Corona is ALL that bad. It's not my fav, but is fairly refreshing, especially on a hot day. Of course, it's not that strong or rich either. But that just helps it go down quicker. Tastes better than a sweet soda pop. And make it ICE COLD.
And Brad, I'm one of the ones who likes a lemon with it better than a lime too. Maybe it started when I always chased my tequila shots with Coronas
Ok, ok, ok-I've been informed by a couple of you now that I need to put lime in the Corona! :o They just happened to have a big shipment of lemons in and they looked so pretty yellow all neatly stacked. :hm:
Also, I should have mentioned that it must be available at the local market or corner store and all that have been mentioned with the exception of the Turbo Dog are. We don't have that in S. AZ that I'm aware of and even so, I don't wanna go outta my way to buy something. If it's available at the local Safeway or corner market then I'll try it.
I should also mention before someone says Miller Lite or something that I really hate mass produced beers like Bud or Miller or similar- yuck, unless it's a reeeeeeally hot day and that's all that's available!
FarmTruk 06-07-2007, 03:26 AM Don't get me wrong. I like lemon in the beer better than the lime. :)
Call these guys for Abita in Tucson...
Finley Distributing 520-623-8800
Maybe they have a store near you they ship to. Everyone I've spoken to whose tried it loves it. I'm getting thirsty now just thinking of it.

rwgregory 06-07-2007, 04:01 AM Now you are talking about something near and dear to me. My father was a Brewmaster and I think I was weaned on hops and barley. Living in a border town, I know a thing or two about Mexican brews. In my opinion if you need to "massage" your beer with lime or lemon, you should change beers. That being said, I have never been a fan of Corona. Too bitter and too much bite. Try Carta Blanca, Dos Equis Lager,(green bottle), Modello, or Superior. Any of these go down easy, especially on a hot Summer day. As for Pacifico; the product they sell here in the States is not nearly as good as the Pacifico sold South of the border. If you ever go to Mex., buy an ice cold litre of Pacifico and you will find the beer that you remember.
Shane 06-07-2007, 11:15 AM You're gonna have to open up to shopping somewhere other than the local grocery store if you want something other than "mass produced" beer.
P.S. I agree FarmTruck, TurboDog does NOT taste like Corona ... then again, I don't care for Corona ... I like a beer that doesn't require a slice of citrus in order to filter out the rat hairs. :D
SEVEND2 06-07-2007, 11:17 AM Corona Light, with a wedge of LIME and a little salt around the rim of the bottle
Or Tecate can with lemos squeezed on lid and salt
or patron Tequila no crutches!!!!!:metal:
64GMCHorsepower 06-07-2007, 12:06 PM What about "Old Scratch".....I tried that, and if I remeber right, its made by Abita, and also, Turbo dog is great....
PLus if I can find it, the label on Old Scratch is hilarious........
70rs/ss 06-07-2007, 12:40 PM Dos Equis XX Dark and with Lime. It not to hide anything, it brings out the flavor, Mexican beers need lime to be enjoyed to the fullest.
1LoC10 06-07-2007, 12:45 PM Tecate
bowtier 06-07-2007, 01:05 PM Dos Equis Lager
+1
That stuff is really good. Don't get it much, but it's a good change.
Seems to go better with a meal too, less carbonation or something.
MMmmmmm, BEER.:b69:
NONHOG 06-07-2007, 02:32 PM I agree Sol is better but DosEquis is also very good
do you have Costco ? they sometimes sell a mexican variety case
worth trying.
fwiw ever tried Bluemoon ? wheat beer served with a slice of orange
around here most Applebee's have it on draft(only way to go)
but its all about what you like !
shifty 06-07-2007, 02:39 PM how about El Presidente or Dos Equis?

That's the exact one I was going to suggest
dwaite72lnghrn 06-07-2007, 08:08 PM When we go out to the local Mexican Resturant I have been getting Dos equis amber which wasn't to bad. I normally like real dark Lager or Porters. Locally yengling lager or porter. In Colorado I had some Petes Wicked Ale man was that good, 98 Shillington was good also. I haven't had soda pop beers in awhile (bud coors and such) had a corona once (clear bottle) did not care for it. I also think you shouldn't have to add a lime to a beer, I it needed it it should have been put in at the brewery.
Alexis 06-07-2007, 08:22 PM Mexicans love lime on about everything, reason for the lime in the corona. I guess you can say it's a culture thing. I don't think i've ever ate food, except for a pizza, in mexico where a couple of slices of lime weren't on my plate.
Nolowrider 06-07-2007, 09:08 PM Try some Turbo Dog by Abita ... comes from Louisiana.
I will agree Turbo Dog is a great beer (voted #1 in America), I also like Abita Amber, Purple Haze, ect., but Guinness Extra Stout is some good sh*t too. Drinking it right now as a matter of fact.
I have gone to the Abita brewery and sipped it straight from the thingy (whate ver you call it), can't get any fresher than that. Ahhhhhhh
special-K 06-07-2007, 09:44 PM My favorite beer is cervesa.Man,that stuff is good.I forget where I got it,but I remember the waiter calling it by that name.:sexy:
Jim_PA 06-07-2007, 09:50 PM Try some Sierra Nevada Summerfest - It's a tasty lighter-bodied beer.
GREASEMONKEY72 06-07-2007, 10:05 PM i personally dont like corona but its not bad if thats all there is:hm:
i drink pretty much anything you put infront of me or hand me till i find out i dont like it, some of my favorites are coors, hieniken, new castle, arrogant bastard ale, bud, miller, theres others ive had and liked but i dont remember the names, go figure
shifty 06-08-2007, 11:27 AM Mexicans love lime on about everything, reason for the lime in the corona. I guess you can say it's a culture thing. I don't think i've ever ate food, except for a pizza, in mexico where a couple of slices of lime weren't on my plate.
i was always told the lime in-the-bottle came about from being outside - putting a lime in the bottle keeps the flies from going near your beer. :D

i've heard the same thing but in Mexico they have bars that make Mexican "Beer Mixes" with lime and hot sauce, they are called Michelada, or something along those lines. Reason why i focus on that.
I've read the wikipedia article about it but lime in a beer isn't rare nor is tomato juice in a beer.
Kinda like "who created the universe?" question. "Why is there a lime in my beer?". lol
shifty 06-08-2007, 12:27 PM it is a michelada, we drink them all the time in 'mi barrio' :D we cheat though, someone actually makes little michelada additives you can toss in your beer.
my secret recipe in both bloody marys and margaritas is beer. i pour 25% of any mexican beer into all of my bloody marys (then add salt/pepper/worcestershire/lime/etc), and if i'm making a pitcher of margaritas, it gets at least a half a beer, depending on how much blanco or reposado i am stuffing into it. i also like putting orange juice in margaritas. i usually use Sol or Dos Equis, but Negra Modelo will work
speaking of oranges, this whole lime-in-the-beer thing reminds me of how a lot of hefeweizens and belgians get orange or other fruit in them.
cstanley 06-08-2007, 12:41 PM sol is made by miller. blue moon is made by molson. not that any of that matters, unless you're wanting "microbrew." and if you have to put a fruit in it to make it taste better, it's not very good beer.
shiner, of course (very near and dear)
abita is also good
i haven't had "chill" yet. life's too short to drink cheap beer. but with all the beer gimmicks, i'm starting to have flashbacks of "miller ice" or bud ice, bud dry, and other hokey attempts. new coke, anyone?
i guess if you're looking for "mexican flavor" then modelo or dos equis is as good as any...
but if you really want the bomb, try to get hold of some Lindeman's Lambic
shifty 06-08-2007, 02:23 PM i guess if you're looking for "mexican flavor" then modelo or dos equis is as good as any...
Don't forget Tecate! It's the PBR of Mexican beer!! haha!
Alexis 06-08-2007, 02:24 PM Something to add to the corona topic, it has sound just in case you don't have speakers.
http://www.guzer.com/animations/coronas.php
Corona is best served with Lime. My staple is Miller Light. Shiner is my favorite dark. Tecate and Dos XX are also faves. But really if it's cold, I'm drinking it.
NF65Fleetside 06-08-2007, 02:42 PM I know some of these migh thave been mentioned but still my fave when it comes down to South American beers....
Sol (Mex)
XX equis (Mex)
Modelo (Mex)
Tecate (Mex)
Quilmes (Argentina)
Imperial (Costa Rica)
Pilsen (Panama)
But one you can find more easily and a bit more fuller and tastier than Corona is Pacifico, that one and XX are my go getters at the grocery store. Also a lil fact on the whole lime ordeal, its just by coincidence that it adds flavor. In lating american countries they recycle/re-use all glass bottles so when your served a lime with your cold one its to sanitize the lip first, hehehehe. Bien cervezas para todos!
sol is made by miller. blue moon is made by molson. not that any of that matters, unless you're wanting "microbrew." and if you have to put a fruit in it to make it taste better, it's not very good beer.
Um, most beer is pretty nasty stuff really-if you're honest with yourself. It took me years to develop a taste for it and I still only like fruit in my beer-as in microbrews, but when I can't get one I like a light mexican beer with lime or lemon!:hm:
stynchrr 06-08-2007, 03:29 PM I used to drink alot of Rolling Rock, I am originally from Latrobe PA, but once AB bought the brand and recipe and moved it out of Old Latrobe I haven't had a drop since. Just can't think of drinking something, that used to be make with mountian spring water, made with New Jersey city water. I am still looking for a good brew but cheap beer is filling the void now.
FarmTruk 06-08-2007, 04:10 PM I have no problem putting a lemon in a beer. I see no difference than putting hot fudge on ice cream, steak sauce on a sirloin, or ketchup on fries.
Fred T 06-08-2007, 06:03 PM If you're wanting a good Mexican beer, try Negra Modelo. It is dark, but very smooth. All the wife will drink. I love it too, but my favorite beer store has over 400 varieties, and I trying to sample them all. :D
Ok, I just tried Dos Equis and Don't Likeit!:barf:
I'll stick with Corona with lime for now until I can find the Sol and try that. :ito::barn:

I would really like some Yuengling, but it isn't sold in Texas. I got some of their black and tan last year when I was on vacation in Florida, and really enjoyed it.
Slonaker
papawswrench 09-28-2007, 08:44 AM No Spec's Liquor store in San Antonio, Slonaker? They will have it.
As for me, I am a cheapskate, and no afficianado, I just like beer!
NO LITE BEER for me.
