Change the intake gasket before the install. I replace them all the time due to vacuum leak cuasing lean codes (P0171 AND P0174). Good luck and thats a clean looking truck.

the truck is extra nice... the frame ( and truck in general) is much better then expected... but you know how these prokects go, you start off with a engine swap, then it leads to a frame off restoration.... so next week expect to see some progress pics...

Good luck with swap, got to love the all aluminum engine blocks. I got one out of a SSR with less than 1000 miles for $1000 two years ago.

Just as a warning, I am not sure if the block is the same as the SSR, but the dip stick for these engines are in the oil pan. When you swtich to the truck pan, it uses a dipstick in the block. You can locate and drill.

Hey Killer......i see you got the truck and motor ready fro me to pic up to come to my house........lol i wish.... i want to see this build..I found one in the paper that only has 150 miles on it and all the wiring is with it but minus the tranny for $2000.00 i was hoping it came with the tranny too but he said he was going to keep it...It came out of a 05 3/4 ton chevy van....Wish i had the funds to get it....What all does this swap involve?
This was the add that i had found and i have ben emailing the guy about it...

Everyone will have to wait and see what's all involved! I think you guys will enjoy as 68 ss fills you in as he goes throughout the truck. The $2450 is by no means a bad price compared to what the engine cost new but you could get engine, tranny, computer, harness for around 3 grandish almost spankin new. just have to shop around. Hope this helps!

did you actually need to do this? I got an LS1 out of a car, tossed on a oil pan from a truck, and you must replace the oil pickup, dipstick tube, dipstick and windage tray to adapt - the OEM dipstick tube and dipstick come bundled together, same as the oil pan and windage tray - and the truck dipstick tube plopped right into the car dipstick hole without a problem - simply used a different bolt hole to mount the dipstick (alternate hole was factory provisioned and tapped into the head)

Curious if this is not the case with the SSR or TB SS engines

No hole for the SSR motor for the dipstick to go in the oil pan. Just a blank spot. I had to drill it. The upper bolt hole was there, but no hole in the block. Luckily it is easy to drill aluminum.

Do the SSR and TB SS use the same block configuration and pan?

69Custom
06-12-2007, 03:43 PM
I am not sure if they use the same configuration, but I know that they both have the dipstick in the oilpan. Someone from ls1tech was saying that they had to do what I did with there trailblazer engine.

i remembered seeing a post in the past couple weeks over there about drilling the block for the TB SS pan (in fact, i replied in it asking). i completely forgot about that - either way, this is excellent information to consider for anyone doing the swap.

68 short step
06-12-2007, 11:17 PM
on the oil dipstick, the block on the TB has the boss machined where the dipstick would go, but isnt drilled all the way through... so get a 3/8 drill bit and drill it through (about 1/8" of material)... easy thing to do.
got the block, water pump, and acc. bracket painted and installed back on the block... starting to look like a enigne again

on the paint, auto zone, oreillys, napa all of them have engine paint...yes it'll stick to iron, with anything its the prep to get it to stick good.....
getting the wiring done, this is the most time consumeing part, but im moveing much quicker then on mine... took 1.5 nights of working on it to get where im at now ( on mine it took 2 weeks)... looks like a big mess, but it goes with any of the GEN III swaps....
