View Full Version : Project - '69 4x4 named "Patches"
sdailey 07-12-2007, 02:11 PM Well here is my new project that I bought June '07. It's a 1969 C/10 on a 4x4 shortened lwb frame. It has factory air, ps, and pb. The truck has 3/4t running gear with a 350 and a 4spd tranny. Upon further inspection it has 2wd Nissan springs under the front end or at least that's what's written on them with a paint pen. (Notice how the front wheels are "tucked" in the wheel wells) Anyway, I'm just now starting to strip it down to the frame to see exactly what "Patches" is made of and I figured I might as well start a build thread to show what pictures I have so far. Thanks to everyone for the advice so far on my new project, especially Mike and Dustin. Enjoy!

sdailey 07-12-2007, 02:20 PM Here is my '76 donor truck after I took the cutting torch to it. I'm swapping out the 3/4t axles for the ones off the '76 so I can get disc's up front. (Notice the new Warn hubs.)
sdailey 07-12-2007, 02:25 PM Please feel free to chime in with any advice or tricks you learned while doing your projects.
I'm hoping to have the cab and front clip off this weekend so I can tell how bad "Patches" really is. My goal (one day) is for it too look like this one.
VA_TLC I hope you don't mind me using your truck as a reference. It just looks so good. I envy you.
kyoung 07-12-2007, 02:27 PM I love the name.."Patches" Great start and good luck with the project. I'll keep an eye out for updates.
RedZ71 07-12-2007, 02:37 PM excellent project... and you sure picked a nice one to look up to too!!
prg machine 07-12-2007, 03:35 PM A lot to be said about the shortening of the frame here. Some may not agree with me , but I would have prefered seeing a diaganol or double section or Z for the shortening . I would get the weld checked out by a pro and possibly re-done. Then plate over it with a "fishplate" for strength a fair distance front to back . Welds about an inch long and spaced 2-3 inches apart along the sides of the plates.
Looks like a good project for sure. The cab looks like a lotta work.
sdailey 07-13-2007, 06:50 AM Strengthening the frame is on the top on my things to do list first. I already have some 3/8" plate to weld in there when I finsh stripping the frame.
sdailey 07-17-2007, 07:37 AM I made a little progress over the weekend on Patches. I got the front clip and cab removed with some help from my neighbor Alan (user name here Alan's Classic). The last picture is one more reason for the name Patches.
1969k10stepside 07-17-2007, 09:09 AM I am fairly positive the frame is also from a 69 K20 chopped down.If those axles were the originals from the chassis than the axles and the frame are pre 70.70 they went to open knuckle axles with drum brakes. The rear spring hangers are also a pre 70 or 71 item. The front spring hangers are another give away-69 was the first year they used those style front spring hangers. The power steering..if the frame is dimpled for the power steering than it's a 69-72 frame.69 is when they first put the power steering box on that wasnt ram assist power steering. If the frame is flat around the steering box its a 67-68.So,I am 99.9% positive the frame/chassis is a 1969 due to the power steering, front and rear spring hangers, and the closed knuckle front axle. So,there you go..The frame VIN will confirm the year.
Dustin
jerry moss 07-17-2007, 11:35 AM if you plate the frame do not off road it much. plating will eliminate the ability of the frame to "flex" and it will break at one end or the other of the plate. the Z cut is the proper way to shorten a frame.

jkade 11-30-2007, 06:34 AM That is gonna be nice when finished and I like the Kubota also.
sdailey 12-31-2007, 02:56 PM No updates as of yet. I found a factory SWB 4wd frame that I'm going to use once I start work on it again, which will probably be after the first of the year.
Stay tuned. Work in progress.
1969k10stepside 12-31-2007, 03:01 PM I hadn't heard anything from you so I wondered about the truck.Glad that you found a good frame..
NEVERENOUGH 12-31-2007, 03:22 PM Nice project I love the look of a lifted short bed 67-72 body style. They are getting hard to find and expensive but have a look like no other. Glad you found a good frame start with a solid foundation.

sdailey 02-20-2008, 01:10 AM As you all know, doing a build takes plenty of time and lots of money and I like most everyone else have little of both.
As of late I've been trying to acquire parts as money allowed. I had to do a little work on the frame before taking it to the sandblaster. The frame had some stress cracks coming off the bolt holes at the rear leaf spring hangers.

I'm still working slowly but surely on Patches. Once I get the chassis done I'll worry about the body. I'm trying to take baby steps through this process and not get too overwhelmed, but it's real easy to do at times.:waah: Anyway, thanks to everyone on this board for the wealth of information, support, and parts.;)
A special thanks to the 4x4 guys that have been helping me through this process. You know who you are.:metal:
Stay tuned.

Thanks. Yeah, I saw this tire/wheel setup somewhere and it just stuck with me.;)
Unfortunately, I haven't made much progress since my last post. I've been waiting on some nicer weather so I can finish painting all of the chassis parts.

sdailey 03-15-2008, 11:54 PM Well we had some nice weather here yesterday (finally) so I was able to make some progress on Patches with the help of my bro-in-law.
We rolled the frame outside and let it "warm up" a little while we went and got a few supplies.
The chassis paint from PMI (www.nomorerust.com) was really easy to apply. We opted for the foam brush method. I think it turned out pretty good for the most part. I decided to use their satin finish, but it looks pretty glossy to me. Either way it turned out nice.
I'm not making as much progress as I'd like to, but it's progress none the less.:metal:

Slammed1,
I pondered on 33's vs 35's for a long time and finally decided on the 33's based on the number of trucks on here running 33's and a 4" lift.

PFRED "Flap Disc" you don't use a lot of pressure with them, they will tear down the surface imperfections swiftly and efficiently.
More info on PERFD's site (http://www.pferdusa.com/products/206/20610/206100108P.html) These are the discs you will need, when picking them up make sure you don't get the ones for stainless or aluminum, they wont work. As well absolutely do not use these discs on Stainless Steel, or Aluminum because they can potentially explode violently.
The wire wheel that you were using is actually primarily used to remove grease and carbon deposits, not rust, as well their other primary function is to remove slag and clean a weld of smoke residue in SMAW or FCAW welding.
I will be watching your build, it looks to me like your fixing to have a damn nice truck on your hands.
msgross 04-16-2008, 12:34 AM nice build.... I missed this thread until you PM'd me... glad to see some of my research being put to use on another truck. I'm happy with the paint as well... remember that it should cure more than 48 hours between coats... or I think it needs scuffed. Looks great and shiny too... I would have thought that the satin would be duller. I do know that the primer won stick to new cold rolled steel without being scuffed... my springs clamps flaked off...oops
I'll keep an eye on this one too and hopefully we can help each other out with tips and tricks... Love those tires...
Madmandav 04-16-2008, 12:43 AM :c2: Nice, I know what you mean about axle cleaning being a pain.
msgross 04-16-2008, 01:59 AM I had mine blasted, didn't cost that much... hopefully they didn't getmuch sand in the oil though!
did you get a leaf spring lift for all four wheels? If not you could do a rear shackle lift, keep your original springs while you have the rear shackles off...
sdailey 04-16-2008, 02:31 AM I had a flap disc to use on the axles but I figured I couldn't get into all of the different nooks and crannies with it like I could the wire wheel. After spending an entire afternoon of cleaning the rear axle I decided to have the front one blasted. What a timesaver that was.
Mike I used an all spring lift on the truck. Everything on Patches was pieced together (hence the name) so I started from scratch with everything pretty much. The rear axle is complete and actually is sitting on its on 2 wheels as of now. I'm trying to button up the front axle now so I can have a rolling chassis to admire soon.:metal:
I'll be posting more pictures soon. Stay tuned.

I still have to run the brake and fuel lines (after I decide on a tank), finish painting the tranny/transfer case crossmembers and motor mounts and get them installed, replace the tie rod (it looks straight in the pictures, but its not), and install the power steering box. Once that's done I can start on the motor and tranny.
I've looked at my cab numerous times trying to find a way to salvage it, but it's too far gone to try and repair. So I'll be looking for a cab pretty soon. (hint hint) The bed is in really good shape though, other than the tailgate:waah:. Oh well one day at a time.
Frizzle Fry 04-22-2008, 05:32 PM You're makin me want to build a 4x one day. Do you like that paint more than POR-15? Exp with both?
sdailey 04-22-2008, 06:20 PM The Master Series paint and primer both went on really well and I would recommend them to anyone. The only "problem" I had with the paint was that I had a few runs in it. No complaints other than that. I applied both the primer and paint using foam brushes from Home Depot and it covered really well. I've never used the POR-15 stuff, so I can't speak for their product. I went with the Master Series line based on the results other members had with it and also the customer service I got when I called with a few rookie questions about it. Good luck with whichever one you choose. I'm sure either one will do just fine.
see ten 04-22-2008, 07:39 PM Looks good so far bro! However I do have doubts about it fittin through that garage door once the cab gets mounted.
sdailey 04-22-2008, 07:56 PM Thanks for pointing that out Asa. I've already noticed that "problem" as well. We've actually been looking into building a 30 x 30 garage for extra space anyway. We've already had some site prep done.
http://i127.photobucket.com/albums/p145/sdjohndeere1/IMG_0071.jpg
sdailey 06-04-2008, 02:10 PM Progress on Patches has been slow lately. I still have a few odd and end things to finish the frame. I ordered an aluminum fuel tank to mount under the bed and I received it last week, but haven't had time to mock it up yet. Many thanks to msgross for getting a group discount on the fuel tanks.:metal:
The tank looks good for the most part, but there are a few things I'll have to fix before I install and use it for the first time. Simple things like deburring all of the holes that were drilled and angling the vent tube to face the same way as the filler.:banghead::banghead:
http://i127.photobucket.com/albums/p145/sdjohndeere1/IMG_0097.jpg
I have been looking for another cab and got lucky (for a change) and found one less than 10 miles from home.:metal::metal: It needs some rust repair as well, but not as much as my original cab needs. I got the cab and both doors for $200.:metal: Part of the original plan was to install a 71-72 front end on Patches, so I picked up a '72 hood from the same guy with the cab.

Mike,
What brand patches do you have? Tri-Plus? PM me a list and prices on what you have. I was a little disappointed with the over all quality of the tank. There were small things that we spelled out in my drawings that didn't happen, but no biggie. I can correct those issues myself.
sdailey 06-04-2008, 05:12 PM That tank looks huge!
It looked smaller on paper. The tank is only 13" at the rear and slopes down to 12" in the front. Once it gets powdercoated black and I install a hitch and the rear bumper you'll never see it. At least I hope not anyway.
msgross 06-04-2008, 06:21 PM Mike,

That sucks about the tank, I had a few small issues but they won't affect the installation. Did you contact Dave? Overall im pretty happy, especially for the price. Let me check on the panels. I purchased the panels from Jerry at the TN truck shop. He usually only sells the best parts, since he builds trucks himself. What city are you in? I might be driving to lower AL again next month...

I'm happy with my tank overall as well. I just don't understand why he didn't deburr the holes he drilled before he welded the nipples and filler on. So now I have to figure out a way to deburr them and get all of the shavings out. The worst place is where he made the 45 deg. joint on the filler neck. There is at least an 1/8th burr in the joint if not more. Maybe he forgot to clean them up when he finished, because all of the holes were not cleaned up. Anyway, enough on that subject. I live in Ball Ground which is @ 45-50 miles due north of Atlanta.
sdailey 09-17-2008, 07:34 AM Progress has been a little slow as of late, but I guess that keeps me from getting burnt out.
I'm planning on installing a hydraulic clutch setup when I get everything put back together, so I contacted Novak Conversions inquiring about their hydraulic clutch kits. Their website listed a few bellhousings that their kit would bolt right up to, but it didn't list mine. I sent them a picture of my bellhousing and they informed me that I needed to have one boss (red square) on my bell housing machined down to match the thickness of the other bolt holes (blue square).
http://i127.photobucket.com/albums/p145/sdjohndeere1/IMG_0330.jpg
I went to a machine shop that we use for work and they were able to machine the boss for me for free no less.:metal: (Sorry for the bad angle)
http://i127.photobucket.com/albums/p145/sdjohndeere1/IMG_0398.jpg
I have went back to Novak's website since having the machine work done and was surprised to see my bellhousing pictured on their site with a new paragraph describing how to modify a cast bellhousing. So now I'm just patiently waiting for the royalty checks to start coming in so I can pay for my build.
Scroll down about half way on Novak's website to see my pic and their hydraulic kit.

sdailey 10-02-2008, 07:39 AM Progress has been slower than I like, but I have no one to blame but myself. (Ignore the dust on the frame.)
However, I have been doing some small, tedious things trying to finish the frame and driveline.
I spent this past weekend painting the driveshafts and the last few crossmembers. I installed the engine and t-case crossmembers last night. There's something about the look of shiny black paint and new zinc coated grade-8 bolts.

I had my tranny and t-case rebuilt here recently so that's done at least.

The new crate 350 finally made its way on the engine stand and is awaiting paint and parts.

I've been ordering a few parts here and there when money allowed.

I have all of the necessary sheet metal now to rebuild the cab. Thanks to msgross for some of these parts.

I received my new stainless brake lines from Inline Tube yesterday.

I hope to button up the driveline in the next month or so and then move on to the cab. I guess my cab repair will be my winter project this year.
Yukon Jack 10-02-2008, 09:57 AM What an awesome project - I can't believe I have missed this post until now!!!
Your tire and rim combo is one of my favorites too!
sdailey 10-02-2008, 10:20 AM It's not hard to miss Mark.
I haven't been making alot of noticeable progress to post about everyday.
steelhorse 10-02-2008, 11:37 AM Man looking good!Keep up the good work.
msgross 10-02-2008, 04:09 PM I need to get some of those brakelines... let me know how they go... I just blew more money at Carlisle today so it may take awhile to save for them... but atleast I have 6 vent windows now!
sdailey 10-02-2008, 08:36 PM Mike,
I'll let you know how they fit once I install them. I'm a little worried about their fitment though.
I called Inline in the past inquiring about brake lines and informed the tech that I had a '69 with '72 axles and he told me I needed '72 brake lines.
Well this past week when I ordered them I talked to another tech/salesman and he told me I needed '69 brake lines and not lines for a '72 because my frame is a '69. Which makes sense to me. I guess I'll find out when I install them.
msgross 10-03-2008, 05:52 AM I think the frame matters most, then if it's power or not....
I tried telling them that I had a 68 frame with power and an 82 axle and they said "custom" which didn't sound cheap! I think you have to hit the hard mounts on the frame, which have been different over the years.
Alan's Classic 10-03-2008, 06:09 AM Great to see some progress and pix. :metal:
sdailey 10-03-2008, 07:22 PM Man looking good!Keep up the good work.
Thank you sir!
Great to see some progress and pix. :metal:
I guess if I do enough small things it'll all add up eventually.

sdailey 11-17-2008, 02:12 PM :wop:
There hasn't been any progress made to post pictures of.
Things have been slow go as of late. I'm slowly buying parts as money allows.
Alan and I should start working on the cab after the holidays when things get back to normal.
Stay tuned.;)
67-72crazy 11-18-2008, 07:12 PM nice truck, keep up the good work.
sdailey 12-01-2008, 08:06 AM I was able to spend a little time working on the truck over the holiday weekend and made a little progress.
I got the tranny, bellhousing and transfercase painted and installed. (Note to self fill both with gear oil.)

http://i127.photobucket.com/albums/p145/sdjohndeere1/IMG_0003-1.jpg
I also got the rear crossmember cut out so I could mock up my fuel tank. I've really got to get a garage built. I set the smoke detectors off in the basement while grinding the rivets off.:waah:

http://i127.photobucket.com/albums/p145/sdjohndeere1/IMG_0009.jpg
I think once I install a receiver hitch, rear bumper and paint the tank it will blend in pretty good and hopefully won't look so "oversized".
http://i127.photobucket.com/albums/p145/sdjohndeere1/IMG_0010-1.jpg
I also got the crate motor scuffed up and ready for paint. I'm debating on whether to rattle can it or shoot it with single stage. I'll probably just rattle can it and be done with it.
http://i127.photobucket.com/albums/p145/sdjohndeere1/IMG_0016.jpg
Stay tuned.....
Alan's Classic 12-01-2008, 06:46 PM That's what your engine looks like out of the bag..:lol: Everything is looking good. Glad to see progress.;)
