4X4K1500 07-19-2007, 11:15 PM My dad and I have been in the long, slow process of restoring this truck for about 5 years now. We bought it in pieces. It has a little over 16,000 miles as it was a utility truck for a fire dept. We were skeptical about the mileage but being a fire truck and when you look at the amount that is wore on the pedals it appears that the mileage is correct.
When we bought it the frame had already been sandblasted and painted. The previous owner got rid of the utility tool box bed and had already purchased another bed.
We had the paint done by an older, retired guy who now restores cars. It's not a top dollar paint job. The paint has no clear on it. My dad wanted everything to be original so he researched the paint. Everything is original for the truck except the wheels.
My dad and I only replaced gaskets on the original 307 Chevy and we had someone else rebuild the carb. We spent a majority of the time with little things like interior pieces and wiring lights.
The 16x10 Eagle Alloys came with the truck and we bought the 33x12.50 STS's for $300 so it was a good deal.
There are a few kinks to be worked out and we'd like to install a CD player along with power steering.
I've driven it and all I can say is the 456 gears and 4 speed make this truck a beast. First gear is very low and in 4th gear it tops out at 50 mph. It also has a locker in the rear. The truck overall is very beefy lol. Sorry for the long story.

OMG that's beautiful! I just got an erection!
nplocoman 07-19-2007, 11:54 PM Now that is one fine looking truck! Don't like the mirrows. Maybe if they were crome. I can appreciate the original restore for using them. Thanks for the pics. That is just the truck I am building now. It's in the four flat tires thread. Saving this one for a favorite. Thanks again it's awesome!
nplocoman 07-20-2007, 12:01 AM Oh yea PLEASE don't cut the dash for the tunes. There are better ways to do it!
Palf70Step 07-20-2007, 04:34 AM Beautiful truck!!

gonline71 07-20-2007, 11:05 AM Great job! That truck is beautiful.
Yukon Jack 07-20-2007, 11:14 AM :jdp: WOW!
LEEVON 07-20-2007, 11:43 AM That's hot.
Spanky_Pete 07-20-2007, 11:58 AM That is simply spectacular. Just as nice and clean looking underneath as it is inside and out.
My '68 K10 has chrome versions of those mirrors. I'm sure they're useful but they do seem rather bulky and out of place.
BB72CHEVKT 07-20-2007, 11:59 AM great job!! nice stance
Bob Moore 07-20-2007, 12:17 PM You did a wonderful job of keeping it original. Original is not "my thing" but I think restoration is the most difficult to pull off as well as you 2 have done.
Outstanding job - Bob
OlChev67 07-20-2007, 12:31 PM thats a great lookin truck
bcanini 07-20-2007, 12:56 PM sweeeet truck man!!!! you've done a great job!!!!!

msgross 07-20-2007, 05:02 PM WOW, I love that truck...
That is true inspiration to finish my 68 K-10! nice job....
special-K 07-20-2007, 05:19 PM You guys did great. That thing is beautiful.I really like the RV Junior mirrors. They are good old utilitarian truck mirrors, yet compast giving them true style that only a truck lover can appreciate.
Joesjunk 07-20-2007, 05:22 PM Very nice!!!!
JAKES 68GMC 07-20-2007, 05:35 PM Wow that is a beautiful truck! Actually, damned near flawless! Is that stock suspension height? Does it steer hard with the 33x12.50's and manual steering?
b&a72 07-20-2007, 05:41 PM That my friend is a bad a$$ ride!
PanelDeland 07-20-2007, 05:42 PM There is only one thing about that truck I don't like.I don't usually like a restore as well as a slightly modified truck but that one is beautiful.I even like the 'original' paint. The wheels and tires look good. The mirrors may not be to the taste of some folks but they work really well.I like that you can still see the FD #'s on the visor.Should be a nice ride for parades. It looks like you managed to find all original trim and interior, but doesn't look like much of it is newer than the truck. You should be proud of the awesome job and truck. You should also treasure the memories you made with your dad while restoring the truck.
BTW What I don't like about it? It's not mine!!!
stllookn 07-20-2007, 06:14 PM That truck is simply OUTSTANDING! Don't change a thing on it and DON"T cut the dash....PLEASE!!!!!!!! Ok...you can change the gears in the rearend!
jhow66 07-20-2007, 06:23 PM Very Nice!!!! Just think how much nicer it would be if you had painted it red! :)
nplocoman 07-20-2007, 08:52 PM Very Nice!!!! Just think how much nicer it would be if you had painted it red! :)
Oh No! That is as bad as my mirrors flame:lol:

jerry moss 07-20-2007, 10:34 PM WOOOOOOWSER, very sweet truck.
4X4K1500 07-21-2007, 12:18 AM Wow that is a beautiful truck! Actually, damned near flawless! Is that stock suspension height? Does it steer hard with the 33x12.50's and manual steering?
The suspension is stock and it's a bit tough to steer. We are trying to find the best way to go about installing power steering. Even if it's not original we feel that for safety that it's needed and will make driving a lot easier.
And we plan to find a stock radio to put in the opening for looks and wire a separate CD player under the seat.
nplocoman 07-21-2007, 12:33 AM On the radio just put a non radio plate. The truck probably was not equipped with a radio being a civil service truck. I am just speculating. I still keep coming back and looking at the pic's. SO SWEET
Steering parts are not that hard to find. They are commond to a lot of models.
keenee 07-21-2007, 03:58 AM Splendid!!! Bravo!!!! Nice!!!!!
msgross 07-21-2007, 06:31 AM I found an NOS AM radio on Ebay for about $40, some go for $80 or that's a good idea about the "radio delete" plate.
Do you have the stock front closed knuckle axle? If you do some searches on here you will see the issues of the power steering. Takes a little mod to mount it to the frame since our frames are missing the "dimple" and "raised pads" but it can be done....
Bishops Trucks 07-21-2007, 06:41 AM That is BEAUTIFUL! You guys did a great job on it.

I thought the '67's were the only frames not "dimpled" for power steering? Were the '68 4x4's also not dimpled...or were the frame rails different for manual steering trucks? Just curious.
JAKES 68GMC 07-21-2007, 09:13 AM My frame isn't dimpled. I tryed fitting the 70 P/S box to the GMC yesterday, and it was just a disaster. 1 bolt hole lined up, there was about an inch of clearence between the steering arm and the leaf spring, the box hit the core support mount. So, today I'm putting my manual steering box back in.
Sorry for the hijack, thats a beautiful 68 Chevy. (I can't get over how pretty it is:lol:)
4X4K1500 07-21-2007, 09:19 AM Yes it is closed knuckle and where can I get a radio delete plate?
msgross 07-21-2007, 12:04 PM Yes it is closed knuckle and where can I get a radio delete plate?
go to the parts board, usually one for sale. You will have to paint it to match your truck color.
69halfton 07-21-2007, 01:05 PM beautiful truck!
i love the stance with the ire size, nice choice. io also love that you didn't touch the original motor, just paint. That thing would pull anything, especially with 4.56 gears.
simply unbelivable.
1969k10stepside 07-21-2007, 01:09 PM For power steering you could put ram assist power steering on.That's what the 67-68s had anyway. That way you dont have to modify your frame. You dont even have to change steering boxes! And for those wondering..69 is when they started "dimpling" the frames, whether it had power steering or not.67-68s had no dimples in the frame whether it had ram assist power steering or manual steering.
Truck looks great!

Where can I look for info for ram assist steering?
nplocoman 07-21-2007, 05:25 PM There were a couple on the parts board in the last two or three weeks. List a WTB on the board and you will find the parts!:) I just looked at my 68 c20 2wd. it has a dimpled frame with standerd P.S.. You might want to check your frame before you buy a ram set up.
msgross 07-21-2007, 05:28 PM parts board again... junkyard or Ebay
someone just had one for sale, but plan on spending a little $$$
va_tlc 07-21-2007, 08:04 PM vey sharp truck, everything about it is flawless, betcha gonna have a big ole smile on while driving hat...

I take it this box will only work if my frame has a dimple?
*edit NVM that's not the gear box
nplocoman 07-22-2007, 12:14 AM yes that is where you need to look at the frame. the mounting raised areas in the second photo where the frame meets the gear box. It be raised as the photo shows.:)Thanks for the fotos!!!!!!!!!!

Sequoyah 07-22-2007, 10:39 AM Beautiful truck! Good job! :)
streetstar 07-22-2007, 11:25 AM Classic Autosound makes a head unit that fits the stock opening - complete with a Chevy logo, that will control a cd changer , that you can stash under the seat ---
its pricey compared to budget systems, but if you compare the price against middle to high end systems, and its justified. Plus not having to cut the dash is priceless

Notice there is no hole in the cowl for antenna. It would not seem right to drill it, I am facing the same dilemma on my 69 with radio delete:confused:

I can't think of it right now but there is a company that makes a small antenna that will mount under the dash out of site.
toms68cst 07-22-2007, 02:01 PM That's a really sweet truck. If that was my truck that's exactly how I'd restore it mirrors and all.
WELL DONE!
