Hey all,
I'm looking for a good engine shop in the North Sound area. Does anyone have any recommendations?

Well honestly right now It's a pipedream, but I've all but conned the wife into letting me build a 70-72 C-10 from the ground up. I would like to buy a truck for around 5-7k and then put about 13-15k into it.

I would like to get a built 383 that makes close to 500 hp.

This is a pretty extreme engine for the street IMHO. Doable for sure, but pretty rowdy :) Anything over 1.2 HP/CID starts getting pretty expensive - I'd budget $5-7.5K.

Well truthfully I am just at the stage right now where I'm doing a lot of research. I've been compiling a list of things and costs. I've found a good website that offers a full SWB fleetside bed for 895 bucks + shipping. Do you think that's reasonable or should I search more?

it's Usbody -they offer everything from cab's to bed's to.. well pretty much everything. I figured that would allow me to get a truck with a rusted out bed and replace it for relatively cheep. (as long as the cab's not all rusted out).

*edit - o.k. after reading more i've discovered taht they are fiberglass remakes... bleh, so that's a negative. Do you know of a website that offers body pieces (in steel) that are available?

I just watched my Dad do a frame-off of a 56Ford and he did WAAAY more grinding, and sanding, and welding than I am willing to do (or have the tools to do). I would much rather buy a bed primed, and slap it on then have it painted.

Hey - and actually I just noticed you are in Monroe. What's the best place to search for the actual trucks aside from the classified ads. I think i'm set on a 71-72 C-10. Is there a particular website other than this one that specializes in Northwest?

There are a ton of trucks on Craigslist :)

I agree. having just built a 383, it's an easy 7k.

there is a guy in Enumclaw that builds nice stuff, but getting him pinned down is tough. Busy man. No warranty, but can build anything you want.

I bought a reman from Jiffy Enginge Builders of Marysville WA back in 1999. I have around 200k on it with very little problems.

I did have to replace the head gaskets once but that's because I didn't retorque the heads when it was new. The do custom builds also at a very reasonable price.

Goodmark Industries is the place to buy your sheetmetal. Summit carries the parts as well and you dont have to pay shipping except on the big stuff. Ive had good luck with the fitment of all their sheet metal also.

T & D Machine in Kenmore - above a dive shop. 2 guys there. Bob is a complete ass and a f**d lover but he built me an absolute KILLER 283 for a '62 chevy I had for about $1800. This was 7 years ago. I had a friend who would know say it had the power of a hot 350 and this was with the worst small block heads chevy ever made, small valves, big chambers, etc... Why would I?.... I wanted to keep the car 'numbers matching' and appear stock but have the most power possible. So, if you could tolerate the guy - I feel like I got a great motor.
