View Full Version : Polishing/Sanding a "garage" paintjob

My '64 Step was grace with a not so badly executed "garage" paintjob, in bright red (white cab upper). I'm wondering if it's possible to attack it to polish/sand it into submission so that it's smooth and shiny. Looks like single-stage paint for sure, just not terribly smooth.

Anyone with experience with this willing to give their opinion? I have a nice Porter cable 2747 polisher that I thought I'd sic on an unsuspecting body panel with a compound of some sort, just to see.

I'll try and get some halfway decent photos of the condition of the paint later, but if you can imagine it's a 20ft'r... looks good but not so shiny or smooth ...almost like there's dust in the paint.

That will be REALLY hard to judge without being in front of the paint. Go to a hidden corner area and do a test sand. Sand with 2000 grit till its smooth.. Then polish.. You might go right through the paint with just 2000 grit... If you dont, it will give you an idea of what your working with...

Thx for the advice!!!

Yeah, I like that pinstriping too. The PO did that, I can take no credit.
