Ive run out of time and money...again and I promised myself Id be on the track this year. I want to run for points in the street bracket but need advice on traction. Im running a 406/th400 into a peglegger w/3.07.. the later is what makes me sick. Im thinking of buying a mini spool and slicks and calling it good (until I can afford more) Im guessing I can run low 14s with these gears but what size slicks? Do I need cclip eliminators to run the spool? This is a track and back driver- will the spool be ok or am I going to pop I know you will need more info so shoot away..

I think it will work. I'd run a 28 x 10 slick and be looking for a 9 inch for later!

thats an awesome tire. im lovin it. but i have 4.10s spooled.every1 used to laugh at my little slicks and say i had pizza cutters on the back, but i ran 26 x 8"s from mickey thompson and with a good burnout they would dead hook 1.7x 60'.and with the 4.10s i ran outta gear just short of the line.but with your gear you would be cool. why waste the money on a big tire when you can get away with a small one. peg legged might give you some trouble. just do a cheap mini spool. this is all budget so you can save cash and throw a nice built rear in it. but this is just what i got away with. Good luck

i believe if you go into the rearend with the spool i'd change the gears to 373's You'll like it a lot better than the 307's. If you keep the 307's and buy slicks and a spool, i don't believe that you will have any traction issues.

im going the mini spool route for a while and i have a built big block th400 and 3.73 gears and drag radials.... i looked into the eliminators and it looks like you need custom shafts to run them. i figure see how long a mini spooled stock axle will last while saving for a 9 inch...... run it and run it hard untill it breaks them worry!!

some one told me one time I can't believe you run your truck that hard and I said if it breaks I need new $hit anyway!

djracer thats the right set of mind!!! i tell people when they say it has a warrenty or is "unbreakable" if they will stand behind it when i break it because you telling me its unbreakable makes me want to try even harder to break it. just have to ask my snap-on or matco guys, some of my co-workers think its my goal to break everything.

run the hell out of it and just keep in mind if it breaks its another cool story you'll have to tell your kids one day or brag about next week!!!

Im lookin at a few 28x10 slicks that say they can be mounted on an 8" wheel (ralley) .. they should fit a stock stance truck right?

shouldn't be a problem!

Do it. A spool will help alot but change the gear and watch out for wheelhop it will kill your 12 bolt with slicks if it hooks.

Isnt getting it to hook the idea:lol: ? Do you think the gear ratio would effect wheel hop? and what are some things I could do if I do encounter wheel hop. It is a coil spring rear truck.. thanks

So could I get it to hook with the 3.73 and the same spool and tire?

All of the mini spools that summit has list for passenger car 8.875 12 bolt, didnt see one specifically listed for a truck..is there a difference?? Also is there a 3.73 r&p that I can use with my existing carrier? These questions may sound dumb to some but I am rearend retarded:lol:You guys got me thinking about changing the ratio now

the 3.73's will help you get out of the hole a lot quicker, but would hurt your highway cruising fuel economy.

I havent looked in summit for a mini spool but i know jegs has them listed for a truck 12 bolt. im not even sure there is a difference, i thought the differences came in the size of the pinion shaft and cover between car and truck 12 bolts. and yes they will make a ring and pinion for your carrier, just have to look for the correct series, i belive you want a series 3 carrier

Wheel hop is more of a leaf spring problem most of the time! I don't think I have ever had wheel hop on a trailing arm truck!

There is a difference in a 12 bolt car and a 12 bolt truck rear, pinion in the car rear is 1.6x while in the truck it is 1.4x,car rear is supposed to be stronger because of the larger pinion gear.Hope that helps

ok ordered the mini spool... part # for anyone else interested is Auburn Gear 544801.. Its just about the only one I found listed for a truck 12 bolt.

Any input on the mickey thompson et street radials? Im looking at the 325/50/15's . I do want slicks but these are about the same price and if needed I could drive on the streets with em. I guess Im asking again do you think I can hook (if I stay out of the water) with the mickeys and a mini spool? kind of guessing huh.. http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y256/redhead69/672-radial_b.jpg

Im throwing the ring and pinion swap out of the equation for now just because of my budget right now and the fact Ive never done one, besides it will give me something to look forward to later when Im trying to figure out how to lower my time slips.

i would run the m/t et's if it wasnt a 100% track vehicle. a lot of people talk highly of them. and they are radials so driving on the road wouldnt be bad. i got a set of bfg drag radials on my truck now (havent driven it though) only reason i got them because i got one hell of a deal on them.

if you go that size make sure they aren't too tall! You need a short tire with that gear!

Couch

i just ordered the exact size you listed. thats alot of tire for your gear. its only 28" tall but your gonna bog outta the hole. traction will be no problem.im factory 4.10's, mini spool and those and on engine alone i cant even get em to squak.but they also dont handle bottle outta the hole for me. so i spray like 10 ft. out for now , until i get my progressive nitrous controller.

back to the topic though. thats an awesome tire. from what every1 says they dont get many miles outta them on street use. they are pretty much a cheater slick. the main thing is cops cant get you cause theyre DOT approved and you can run in the street tire class at the track

can a guy run a mini spool and still drive on the street ? i was asking some local guy about it and they said "no way" because you would be breaking axles all the time when you turned

i looked it up the part number for a 71 chevy with a 12 bolt is SAG-PA5569 and they list for 99.95 each... not to bad since i emailed moser and they said it would be 325 for both alxes plus shipping

Couch: are you able to put c-clip eliminators on your axle. cause from what ive been reading everyone says that stock axles need machineing to work with their c-clip elim.s

not my smartest decision but i dont have em. lol. with the spool it would be the right thing to do but i didnt do it. stock c- clips still in it.when i snapped the stock axle i was swinging donuts at whipple superchargers(place of employment) for some pictures and it snapped and chucked the axle, drum, wheel and tire across the parking lot.just missing the camera guys car.landed on the trailing arm.lots of fun.i should get the eliminators.lol

the superiors were like 250ish shipped.

not trying to hijack or anything, but is it possible to put Ford ends on a truck 12 bolt? That would eliminate the c-clips,I need to shorten mine 4 inches on each side and If that would work it would save having to use the eliminators. Thanks

Ok next Qs - I took everyones advice and am having 3.73s installed tomorrow along with my mini spool. I got my hoosier 28x10 and some 8" rallies all painted up and ready to go to the tire shop and have them put on. Do you all recommend I put the screws thru the wheels to prevent wheel spin? Or do I need to worry about it with the minimal amount of power Im runnin?

71Dragtruck

I wouldn't worry about it

Try it with out. You can pick up some white shoe polish, draw a line at the valve stem. Have a buddy video the launch and focus on the tire for 1 or 2 of them.. This will tell you few things, 1) Are you getting tire spin 2) Any wheel hop 3) if your tire is slipping on the rim.

cool.. thanks I will try it without them.
