View Full Version : Tennesseans Help
semperfidoordie 07-03-2008, 10:22 PM Tennesseeans I need some help. I am looking at getting out of the military in a lil under two years and I really want to move to the Chattanooga/Hixson area. I've visited there a couple of times and absolutely loved it. My wife is going to be transferring schools to there if we move but she's a city kid. She grew up in San Diego, CA, born and raised and has never been out of it. I need some help with convincing her. I am looking to come out there next summer and wanted to show her around. I mean I just want to show her that it'd be a good place to live. Can anybody help give me somethings to point out to her as to why it's good other than small towns, woods, mountains, beautiful scenery and I like it?
semperfidoordie 07-04-2008, 11:25 PM ttt anybody?
oldblu65 07-05-2008, 02:01 PM That area is beautiful ! You can be downtown and in 10 minutes you're in the woods with nature . The crime is relatively low ( compared with large cities ) , the cost of living is lower than most parts of the country , especially California .You can buy a very beautiful home in Chattanooga for what a shack would cost in California . If she gets to missing the big city , Atlanta is about a 90 minute drive .Chattanooga was recently listed second on the Best Cities in America top ten list ! She would find the Southern hospitality in Chattanooga second to none . It is a fact that 75 % , of the US , can be reached by car in one days drive from Chattanooga ! It might be easier to give a more convincing argument if her interest's were given . I hope I have , at least , helped ?
semperfidoordie 07-05-2008, 04:24 PM Thanks oldblu. What are the average wages there do you know? Because when she gets out of school she's going to be a elementary school teachers and was wondering what she would make and I am looking to going to school for automotive or welding. Basically what we're afraid of is how crappy the economy is I wouldn't want us to get out there and be screwed since we have only a small handful of friends out there. Thanks
LUV2XCLR8 07-05-2008, 04:29 PM Come out late summer and attend our Meet (End of Aug/ start of Sep) :D

FIRST OFF, GREAT JOBS DOWNTOWN, A BEAUTIFUL DDOWNTOWN ON THE RIVER WITH A HUGE PARK ,RESTURANTS, THE IMAX, There is the aquriam and several cool theatres. Kids love downtown, It is really cool. The north shore has lots to do. There are three malls within 20 miles and you can buy a killer house norht of Chatt in our area for cheap! Way better than San Diego.
semperfidoordie 07-06-2008, 09:17 PM yeah we were looking at some places up in Dayton. Looks like a nice area. Anyone know anything about Nashville? Cause we're going to be living there for a couple years so we can finish school then move to Chattanooga :D
jkaylor68gmc 07-06-2008, 09:47 PM Check out lavergne and Smyrna if you want to live close to Nashville. Chattanooga to nashville is an easy 1.5 hour drive on 24. I make that trip about once a week.
Dayton is not bad at all. We have the bare essentials but it has been blowing up. If you move here, we can have i more dayton board member!
semperfidoordie 07-06-2008, 10:06 PM yeah it's definitely the area I want to live after we finish school and can move out of Nashville
jkaylor68gmc 07-06-2008, 10:17 PM yeah, you can get a descent nice new spec house 2000 sq ft for about 150,000 here and land is about 14000 an acre right now.

LUV2XCLR8 07-13-2008, 06:55 AM Missed the Nashville part of the post, PM 5150 he lives just north of there in WHite House.
semperfidoordie 07-13-2008, 08:47 PM Thanks LUV it's much appreciated
just saw this. Nashville is a great area to live in. What school are you going to attend? What school is she going to transfer to?
semperfidoordie 07-14-2008, 05:15 PM I'm going to be going to Nashville Auto and Diesel and she'll be going to some Christian college around there. She found one there I just can't think of the name of it right now. I'll ask her and find out
LUV2XCLR8 07-14-2008, 05:30 PM There are alot of Christian Colleges in my area also ;)
semperfidoordie 07-14-2008, 05:36 PM lol yeah but NADC is only in Nashville that's the reason I'm going there. But when we graduate I plan on moving to Chattanooga or at least that area
semperfidoordie 07-14-2008, 05:39 PM It was Belmont that she was looking at
cool, one of my good friends is the head Paint and Body Instructor there. Lives in town here with me. He's going to take my blazer down there and paint it here in couple of months when I'm ready.
semperfidoordie 07-14-2008, 06:34 PM nice. I can't wait to get to go there. Should be pretty good. I still have a year and like 10 months left in so soon as that's up hopefully i'll move there as long as I don't find some good unit to reenlist to cause they're offering me 80k to stay in but we'll see. I love TN the couple of times I been there so hopefully it'll all work out good :D
are you going to go the mechanic side or the paint and body route?
semperfidoordie 07-14-2008, 06:50 PM mechanic side
killthewabbit 07-17-2008, 05:47 PM Ha! Just saw this post myself. You're in the same boat I was in when I got out of the navy in 96. We left San Diego and moved back here to Nashville (or Murfreesboro, about 25 minutes southeast). My wife had lived in San Diego or the bay area her entire life. She's actually the one who convinced me to come back here.
The best reason I can give to move here is that it's incredibly easy to make a good life for yourself here, compared to San Diego. I loved it there, but houses, taxes, gas, and almost everything else are cheaper here, often by many orders of magnitude. Considering how it's been my experience that most jobs pay about the same (I'm a computer guy), and it's a no-brainer to come here. There is no state income tax whatsoever. Sales tax and property taxes are the same here as they are there. The friends my age (35) who stayed back there are still saving for their first house, and mine will be paid off within 5 years. Not bragging, you understand, just trying to illustrate the differences.
I have no idea how much school teachers make here or there, so I can't help you there. I've heard good and bad things about NADC, but schools like that tend to have a bad reputation in their home town, so I take it with a grain of salt. If you're moving to Chattanooga anyway, I don't think it's a big deal. I have family there, and would consider moving down that way in an instant. Chattanooga's a cool place.
I'm not sure where to tell you is a good place to move to here in Nashville if your wife's going to Belmont (SW Nashville, close to downtown) and you're going to NADC (east Nashville, further out). If you're looking to buy, I would recommend waiting until you find an area you both like and isn't too hard to commute. If you're renting, disregard that last sentence.
One huge plus of living here is that there really isn't a much better place to be if you're a car/truck guy. There's a lot of stuff going on here, more than anyplace I've ever lived (including San Diego, Los Angeles, NorCal, Philly, FL, etc).
I hope this helps. If you have another question I didn't ask, just post it up or PM.
semperfidoordie 07-17-2008, 06:13 PM thanks a ton killthewabbit that's a good write up on TN. I will have to show it to my wife when I get home here in couple of days. leave for kuwait tomorrow :)
killthewabbit 07-17-2008, 06:48 PM No problem, dude. Be safe.
