I have a couple of surface rust spots on the truck; I’m not painting the truck for at least a year or so but I want to stop the rust from getting worse. Any suggestions?

Check around a little, but I would grind down the paint surrounding the rust, pour some phosphuric acid on the rust and coat it with a few coats of primer.
good luck

:agree:

But I would add epoxy primer to the above and grind the rust as well not just the paint around it before the phosproic acid based rust treatment. You don't need to get all of the rust off if you're just trying to get by till you are going to do it right. Make sure anything loose and scaley is removed before the primer.

just get you a small spot sand blaster. then epoxy prime. if you use a chemical to get rid of the rust, you have to make sure the primer is compatible with it. Some primers tell you to NOT to use rust neutralizing chemicals or the primer wont stick.

Wax it!

Rust grows by oxidation. So if you can keep oxegen off the rust it will not worsen. Remove the flakes then apply a good coat of hand rubbed wax. Keep it waxed up and it will go a long time.

Think of this - the way the original Rustoleum rusty metal primer worked was the fish oils would creep into the rust and prevent further oxidation. And you remember the old timer trick about squirting the inside of doors with used motor oil (used because it was cheap)? That was to keep oxgen and water off the poorly painted metal.

Sounds crazy, I know. But we did this to my buddy's Nova (no money for paint and we knew what sand and prime without paint would do). No appreciable growth for 5 years of Michigan road salt. Just has to wax it good every 3 months or so.

Now, if it's gone thru under those flakes, you'll only be able to get to one side, and it will continue to grow until you replace it.

If you want something simple. Get some spray paint like Mar-Hyde which converts rust to primer. Follow the directions and it works just fine.
