Well since i started to do a few things to the truck i figured id start a thread to chronicle the experiance. This is a budget build and im looking to get it back on the road as soon as possible

This is what i started with it had a 350/350

http://i65.photobucket.com/albums/h234/bizsnatch_2006/Vehicles/Picture001.jpg

Took off the front end and tryed my hand as spraying in some por-15 it came out ok but far from professional. It suited me good as this is my DD
http://i65.photobucket.com/albums/h234/bizsnatch_2006/Truck%20build/DSC_0454.jpg

This is the power plant that i decided to go with LQ4 W/4L80E trans. They just dropped it off last night
http://i65.photobucket.com/albums/h234/bizsnatch_2006/Truck%20build/DSC_0433.jpg

A few problems that came up already:
They broke the coil pack on one side of the engine when transporting. Called and they are going to get me another one.
I need to requisitiona dbc throttle body.

One of these days I'm gonna bring myself to do a fuel injected swap. I always enjoy reading peoples builds. Keep up the great work, its looking good.

Got some small stuff done.
Sifted through the existing wire harness, removed the exising mufflers and piping, bolted the lsx to sbc mounting brackets. removed intake for installation. Mocked up the trans mount to see how far back i can move it.

Ordered
S&P headers, poly motor mounts. Sent the Wire harness and ECU out to Nelson Performance in San Antonio to get reworked.

I dont know about yall but this build has cost me alot just in tool that i didnt have that i didnt know i needed. Any way thats where im at right now.

when taking off my intake i saw this tube(in blue) that wasnt connected to anything. Any one know where it goes to?

Borrowed this pic from a member to show the tube(in blue) im talking about.
http://i65.photobucket.com/albums/h234/bizsnatch_2006/Vehicles/firewall_clear1copy.jpg

From looking at the picture it looks like it has something to do with fuel. So maybe its emissions related??? the other end of the tube is connected to a sensor in the intake.

Ok well i Got the Headers in from S&P.
http://i65.photobucket.com/albums/h234/bizsnatch_2006/Truck%20build/DSC_0514.jpg

So i test fit them and trimmed the transcase on both sides here. The driverside needed more taken off than the passanger side.

http://i65.photobucket.com/albums/h234/bizsnatch_2006/Truck%20build/DSC_0509.jpg

I also got some new Polyurathane inserts so i replaced the old rubber mounts.
http://i65.photobucket.com/albums/h234/bizsnatch_2006/Truck%20build/DSC_0506.jpg
The engine went in fine but as im aligning the motor mounts it seem that they are off about 1". Looking at the picture i can see now that the poly mount looks wider. But im going to get some new rubber ones and see if it will fix the problem.
So here is how she sits so far.
http://i65.photobucket.com/albums/h234/bizsnatch_2006/Truck%20build/DSC_0559.jpg

I also recieved the Wireing harness and ECU back from NealsonPerformance out of SanAntonio. With the let down of the mounts i opted not to start on it though.

Did you spray the POR? I have heard that with out a good mask that stuff can really cause you problems if sprayed. Looking good

From the looks of it, I'd say it's an evap line for the purge valve in the intake, you should not need it at all.

I thought it was the steam line that is under the intake. Check on LS1tech.com in the hybrids section or ask our own Squarebody member PCMCobra since he just finished his swap.

hey cherub,
you will also need the brake booster intake fitting. Can't remember the part#, but I got it from my local dealer, that fitting with red circle on back of your intake, push the red "sleeve" in and pull the black part out, put new fitting in and connect your hose. ;)
On my tranny xmember, I used the stock one, just moved it to the rear mounting holes, and had a "tongue" welded on to it, check my build thread and I think there is a pic in there, if not let me know I can dig it up.
You are making some good progress!
Also on the power steering, just take off your old power steering lines (and that spring) and they will screw right on no problem. That's about the easiest and cost effective thing on the swap. free is good!

From the looks of the pic I think that is for the purge/tank pressure thingy, you can get rid of it, keep the sensor on the intake but just block off where the tube goes in. I used some duct sealer putty, works fine.

pcmcobra

oh, and as for steam line on front of intake, I connected mine to my stock radiator via some home depot fittings, it's not a show piece, but not that bad and serves its' purpose.
If you need any pics, let me know I can show you what I did if you need some visuals.

Can you show me a pic of the steam line so i can get an idea of what needs to be done there.

I have a pic of your tans mount saved so i can take it to a guy and have him weld me up something. Just have to wait till the motor is sitting correctly

Its been slow going but i finally got a chance to work on the truck over the holidays. here is some progress pics.
Removed the bed to do the drop. Dropped the front 6" and the rear 6"
http://i65.photobucket.com/albums/h234/bizsnatch_2006/Truck%20build/12-30-09002.jpg
Motor is not set on the transmission support yet so that why the engine has that angle. (wasnt like that for long.) Gave her a good bath and power washed the rear frame rails. Then pushed her back into her room.

Ok After two weeks of checking and double checking the wiring ive got the engine to crank over. It still wont start though. So now im going to chase that down.

The truck is almost all back together just need to install the grill and align the bed.

HotRod73
03-17-2009, 10:22 AM
I saw you had the wiring sent to get reworked, so you did remove the security crap right? I know that will keep it from running. Just a thought, I don't know squat about these swaps but I have read about that before. I hope to do a swap like this some day

Cherub
03-17-2009, 01:31 PM
Yea i told them to remove the vats when i ordered the tune. Is there a way to tell if they've been done?

HotRod73
03-17-2009, 03:37 PM
I have no idea but im sure someone else will post up and let you know, I just know i have read about this before and a few people had this problem on different boards.. I cant wait to do this swap!

HotRod73
03-17-2009, 03:38 PM
Btw are you sure its a wiring issue? Have you checked all the basics, spark fuel etc... could be something else causing your problem?

HotRod73
03-17-2009, 03:39 PM
also maybe that replacement coil pack they sent you may be bad?? just some thoughts....

Cherub
03-17-2009, 03:56 PM
I checked spark, and Im getint fire. I checked fuel, and im getting 40 psi. Im going to check everything again and see if i missed something.

side note i dont have the maf sensor or o2 sensors hooked up. regadless it should turn on and idle correct?

menace121978
03-17-2009, 04:02 PM
yes it should still fire w/o the maf and o2's. but its the 40psi that worries me.
if im not mistaken you need 58psi on the fuel. i'm gonna look into this on ls1truck and see what i can find out. but i'm almost positive ive read that the motor wont fire if under a certain psi which i think is 58. Dennis

menace121978
03-17-2009, 04:16 PM
ok, i have the book "how to swap ls engine in anything" and it says here that you need at least 58psi at the fuel rail. if not the motors gonna have a serious lean condition if it even runs at all.

what pump are you running? and double check your lines for leaks

HotRod73
03-17-2009, 07:05 PM
Thats what i was thinking, either fuel or the vats in his wiring... I also thought maybe that coil pack they sent him was bad but thats was ruled out... Good luck on fixing your problem hope you get her fixed up really soon, if your like me your dying to drive it!

Im running the AC Delco EP 241 intank fuel pump. I am running an-8 fuel feed line.

Im going to double check for leaks and then Retest to see if IM getting the required 58. Cool cool cool gives me a place to start:metal:

Some update. Called Nelson Performance and they removed the Vats and there is not relearn that needs to be done. Also mentioned like yall have said to check my fuel pressure.

I didnt get to check the fuel pressure but i did find a leak at the fuel filter. I would assume this is the culprit.

What did you get the LS motor from? Also once you got it running did you have the MAF and the O2's hooked up? I would love to get a LS6 in my truck but that would be years from now unless the engine I put in blows. HHMMMM.... :)

The motor came from a 2003 hd2500. It has the LQ4 designation. I went with this motor cause it was the biggest bang for the buck. With alot of performance parts available. Yea all the sensors are hooked up minus the cats. I had all the emissions stuff deleted from the ECM.

This is what the interior looks like right now. The truck was purchased with a Polyurethane dash. We all know the fit ment on those arnt all that great. So that came out and i need to order something else along with door panels, gauge panels, seat cover and seat belts.
http://i65.photobucket.com/albums/h234/bizsnatch_2006/Truck%20build/12-30-09007.jpg

But this is the whats next on the chopping block before all the interior gets ordered and goes in. Since im no body guy with no tools, im going to have to find someone that can patch these first. both passenger and driver side has these.

You will have to source a sending unit from an 87 and up truck (GM 25090846). Combine that with an AC Delco EP 241 fuel pump. Then it will drop right into your existing tank.
