Rick Arad68 11-14-2008, 08:04 PM Sorry to hear it. Your a good guy with a good education, your unemployment won't last long. Keep looking, I bet something even better will come along. 67ChevyRedneck 11-14-2008, 08:32 PM First off, thank you EVERYONE for the sympathy and well wishes, it means a lot :D I've been trying to get my head together over all of this. The not getting a home thing (along with no job) really hit me hard. I've been waiting for my fiance (now wife) to start working for 4 years (she went to grad school) and the cards fell in place when she got a job 10 miles from mine. Oh well, huh? I sat down with the owner of the engineering firm. They DID NOT want to fire me. I'm not the only one going. They will be down to an absolute minimal staff soon. The reason I got laid off was because I don't have client experience. I'm not a PE yet so they hadn't exposed me yet, I've become very proficient in design. They need the project managers with name recognition to keep the few jobs out there coming in. They TRIED to keep everyone by cutting hours to 36 and minimalizing overheard several months ago. It's "so bad" right now, all that just wasn't enough. It's not everyday the guy that lays you off is almost in tears. What they have been doing the past week is trying to place me with a competing firm or contractor with a stipulation that I return once things are back to normal, the bad new is that it appears to be a year or more away. The only company they could find is a geotech firm that I'm not particularly fond of (I used to work there) and I'm not too excited about geotech. Plus, I'm a site designer, not geotech, so they may not be all that interested in me. I've already got wheels spinning. I'm going to meet with the geotech next week and a close friend who's been at a very large international firm that's hiring a couple people is going to talk to their engineering department for me on Monday. They don't do site design (what I do) but they do do (haha, I said doo doo) structural design and construction, which is what I had a double emphasis on at clemson. I'd actually be willing to relearn and learn to do this. I've also found two other firms that are hiring site designers. I'm trying to be pessimistically optimistic, but so far the good: I get to finish out Nov. at my current job with full pay/benefits until Dec 31st. We have one car payment, my S-10, a whopping $120/month. We also have zero CC debt. We could actually afford a home on my wife's salary, but we're not going to stretch ourselves thin, we renewed our apt. lease for 6 months today. I've never been fired before and I've been working since age 13. I worked 27hrs/week during high school, 48/wk in the summer, and about the same hours every semester/summer in college. I don't want a break, I want a paycheck, I'm greedy and motivated. Thanks all, sorry for the novel :D Reguards, Jesse James 67ChevyRedneck 11-14-2008, 08:35 PM PS, the drinkin' thing at the begining was a joke. I rarely drink and I sure as hell don't do drugs :D El Jay 11-14-2008, 09:10 PM If I may, I'd like to express "IMHO; Dude, you didn't get fired! You were "let go" because of economic circumstances. An "eff up" gets "fired." Qualified folks get "let go" because the company can't afford them, and others, because of economic things; whether it be national, or just within the company. Before anybody chimes in; I know, I know, the end results are the same when somebody is hitting the bricks. But the "let go" guy has a better chance of finding a job. '67CRN, you'll do alright. El Jay special-K 11-15-2008, 08:42 AM That`s right. You still have never been fired.Good luck on your re-employment and I hope the company you`ve been with can hang in. retodd7711 11-15-2008, 07:00 PM We also have zero CC debt. Not many people can say that and you should be proud of it. This has been a tough run for many people, but your out looking and not feling sorry. We're in a tight spot at work now, and I'm doing my best to be "indespensible" Keep us posted and I'll add you to my list of people I'm pulling for. Aarons72s 11-16-2008, 08:03 AM I'm sorry to hear that 67cr. I hope you can find another job soon. Palf70Step 11-16-2008, 08:47 AM Sorry to hear the news. Good luck with the searches. Hoods69BadBowTie 11-17-2008, 04:16 AM Damn that sucks sorry to hear that. Good luck on the job hunt and keep your head up bud. 70rs/ss 11-17-2008, 11:52 AM I'd almost be willing to trade places with ys, since I have CC debt and two cars payments, etc, etc. I have a job and my pay tends to go to the bills more than anything else. The comforting thing in all this is you are right financially to have to go through this, lots of others are going through this mess along with a mile of debt to be concerned about as well. Look at the good in this as the bad is just way to depressing. 67ChevyRedneck 11-17-2008, 12:18 PM Sorry to hear that you are out of work. Hope things turn around real soon. I plan to visit my son in a couple weeks that lives in the Greenville SC area. Maybe we can hook up for lunch or something. Keep your head up and eyes open, something will come along. Thanks, and you'll have to send me a PM when the time is getting close or I'll completely forget. I may even wash the truck the day before  She's covered in a foot of leaves. Stupid trees  The S-10 sat all weekend and when I went to work this morning you should have seen the trail coming from behind me from the bed full of leaves  About the CC thing, I had the unfortunate pleasure of seeing what happens to a couple friends and family members when you rack up CC dept, so thanks to them I didn't have to find out for myself. I'm also cheap and I refuse to pay 9.5% interest on something I comparison shopped for and got on sale in the first place. If I don't have the money, I don't buy. My wife's parents were generous to give her her car & truck paid for, payment free. I paid off the 67's restoration a long time ago and paid off the silverado a couple years ago (bought it used.) If it wasn't for our wedding/honeymoon we'd be sitting really pretty right now, but as it was, we ended up spending about $7,000 of our own money on everything (most of that was our wicked awesome honeymoon). Her parents kicked in even more than that. Weddings are friggin' expensive! Not sure what to do, sent out resumes, etc to 4 companies, I have my friend talking to people for me, the geotech thing may fall through... I'm scrambling... if I have to spend even a single week trapped in an apartment with two velcro dogs, I'll probably go nuts. Again, thanks for all the well wishes! Edit: Scratch that, the big corporation isn't hiring right now, even though they just posted openings within the past two weeks, retarded  They have some sort of instant messenger thing there, I cut out all the BS, here's the important part: Friend: "Do you know of anything at all civil....site design or structural that may be coming up in the future?" HR Person: "I doubt Greenville will do much hiring until after the new year, and maybe not until spring, but tell him to keep an eye on the website." I just applied to the job on your website  IvelDesigns 02-10-2009, 12:34 AM hey man, just wanted to check in now that these posts have all been moved into the Employment forum. Any luck finding something yet? One of my former clients was a big geotech firm and they are having some tough times now. They were part of the reason for my layoff since they weren't doing any new projects with us :/ hope you find something soon if you haven't already. 67ChevyRedneck 02-10-2009, 11:29 PM Nope. Nothing. My firm actually tried to hook me up with ECS as a temporary fix to help me out. After a couple weeks ECS came back saying their situation had changed and they will be laying off as well. I worked for ECS back in '04 for a few months after college as a geotech technician. I HATED that job. I have a friend at another large geotech firm and he said basically their only job right now is the BMW plant expansion. I have a couple friends at a very large international construction/design firm and it's rumored they'll soon be doing a big sweeping layoff as well. gcburdic 03-19-2009, 06:29 PM Hey Jesse, I know you're an engineer.....not sure if you'd be interested, but here is a couple websites I like to check every now and then.... www.apwa.net It's the American Public Works Association job board Also, I work in the solid waste business...here's a web site/ job board for solid waste type jobs (some are design)... http://www.getwastemanagementjobs.com Hope this helps you or someone! 67ChevyRedneck 03-21-2009, 12:06 AM Thanks Geoff. I'm trying to expand my search, but it seems every time I go outside of the box I'm either "over qualified" or there's 100 applicants and out of all of them, there's a lot that are much more suited for the positions than I am, so I get "crossed off" the list. This **** is getting frustrating. I have my first "random selection meeting" with the unemployment people on thursday, maybe they'll know what the hell I'm supposed to do  A couple more of my friends got laid off this week and another guy from my old firm was given the axe as well. This "same old song and dance" is getting OLD... F A S T!!! bigguy69 03-21-2009, 10:52 AM hang in there man. we were working 7 days a week right before christmas. now (my wife and i work at the same place) have both been laidoff. about 3 weeks for her. it is going on 4 weeks for me. she is back working 4 days a week. the guys in our dept are taking turns working 4 days a week. so at least i get to work every other week now. i hope things do get better. i wish you the best of luck!!!! 67ChevyRedneck 04-06-2009, 03:21 PM Two close friends and my uncle were all given notice within the past week or so :( Sillyoldman 04-09-2009, 01:04 PM Two close friends and my uncle were all given notice within the past week or so :( Any prospects yet? 67ChevyRedneck 04-09-2009, 11:29 PM Any prospects yet? :haha: No :D My PE exam is in 2 weeks, I'm trying to do all I can to prepare for it. If I pass it could greatly increase my marketability. I still do a quick job search every day. S L I M pickins around here. |
