View Full Version : Porterbuilt Dropmembers & 22's on my 77 Ebay truck
crawdadfox 12-05-2008, 06:59 PM Here are some pics of my 77. Porterbuilt Dropmembers front and back with 3" spindles, Firestone bags and Air Ride Strong Arms in front, 22" Vintec's ( 22x8.5 w/ 5 1/2" backspace & 22x10 w/ 4" b.s) I'm running 255/35/22's front and 285/35/22 rear. The truck lays frame with 5/8" to spare! So with this combo a 30" front would lay!! I narrowed the rearend 2" per side, and raised the bed floor 3" to clear the fuel cell and 4-link bars. I will be moving the stock wheel tubs up and will post pics as progress is made. :chevy:
72BlckButy 12-05-2008, 07:13 PM Crawdad... Y1K () that thing is sweet!
Hopefully not to many will give you crap about cutting up such an original truck, but you won't hear that from me!
Nice work!
Are you going to build a tunnel for the rear c-notch or leave it exposed?
lolife99 12-05-2008, 07:26 PM Crawdad,... THAT IS A BAD MO FO! I am super jealous. How did the backspacing work out front and rear?
I know you were a little worried about the rear.
I wish YOU would have done your bed floor BEFORE me. I like yours so much better.
What engine are you going with?
Any other things I need to know?
Anyone have a good swb floor?
lolife99 12-05-2008, 07:30 PM Second pic is my new wallpaper,...

As much as i hate to cover up Nate's killer work....i have to cover the notch :waah: I wouldn't want my ice chest gettin' caught up in the new c.v driveline!!
crawdadfox 12-05-2008, 07:43 PM Man i was sweating the rear, i thought it was going to be too much backspace but 6" overall was perfect! I had a guy sand blast and prime the bed floor sections for 40 bucks! Moving it up was a piece of cake, just re-drilled the holes 3" higher and bolted it back in w/ a 1/4" spacer in the front bulkhead, and all those extra body lift blocks at work came in handy!!
72BlckButy 12-05-2008, 07:45 PM Dumb question...
Is that the original floor? I'm guessing not since it's a different color, but I didn't know if that actually came in the truck when you bought it.
EDIT
I got my answer from your post above... :D
lolife99 12-05-2008, 07:48 PM I need to ship you a rearend to get narrowed. I love the dish!
Better yet,... bring Bigblock73 your 6-banger,... and I'll send a rearend home with you. (Beer and cash provided)
I think the blazer needs some Vintec Dish wheels now,...

lolife99 12-05-2008, 10:00 PM OK Crawdad,... what's going under the hood of the '77?
dieselarmy13 12-05-2008, 10:27 PM Wow. Cant wait to see more of that truck.
dooce 12-06-2008, 02:14 AM Is this the truck that was on eBay for the longest time, from Arizona or out in that direction? Looks like it. I was hopin somebody would cut it up. Looks great!
crawdadfox 12-06-2008, 02:26 AM OK Crawdad,... what's going under the hood of the '77?
I put a steel crank 350 w/ aluminum heads and the stock turbo 350 trans. I was tempted to put an LS-1 that i have laying here, but that will go in the Biscayne! Now i have to decide on acc. drive, i might just go w/ the Gm. serp. set up.

RunninLo 12-06-2008, 03:19 AM dropmembership has it's privileges! sweet looking truck. I love the look of the dish on the rear wheels.
I like way you hooked up the bed floor to. I always preferes a slightly shallower bed to a bunch of crazy holes or huge covers.
Congrats,
Josh

rodstored-72 12-06-2008, 09:15 AM crawdad,
i am glad to see that it went to a nice home. if the times were different (economy) i would have bought that before you & did almost the same thing!!! i had forgot that you bought that..... great job!!!, so do i understand right that you pulled out the 6 banger???
rodstored-72
p.s. was the truck in as good of shape as the pics indicated?? also did you find any surprises??? .... if you would not mind sharing... thanks!!
crawdadfox 12-06-2008, 09:35 AM Thanks, it wasn't as nice as the listing would lead you to believe, (thats ebay for ya!) its what i consider a 10 footer. But i was happy with what i paid for it..three grand less than the old bidding. I am amazed how 100% rust free the truck is, people out west dont know how lucky they are! I copped out on the 6 banger (sorry everyone!) i had the small block so i took the easy way. I'm glad you like it and thanks for the kind words from you and everyone else, kind of makes all the busted knuckles worth while!!
boatpuller 12-06-2008, 10:05 AM man,that turned out sweet.two tone's are my favorite.good job man.
tvblazer78 12-06-2008, 10:17 AM Looks killer man!! And I love the wheels, I wish I did 22" now.;)
crawdadfox 12-06-2008, 10:26 AM Looks killer man!! And I love the wheels, I wish I did 22" now.;)
Thanks alot man! Well i know there would be a long line to take your 20's off your hands..hint.. hint!!
lolife99 12-06-2008, 11:09 AM Whats your plan for the firewall? Was this an A/C truck?
I assume the 22's kill the chance of keeping the A/C box,... but if it's a non A/C truck,...
Can you save the factory heater core?
crawdadfox 12-06-2008, 11:21 AM Yes it HAD factory a/c, now its got a 22 in its place:lol: As hot as it gets down here a/c is a must. They had a member with a super clean step side that posted a few pics of the Vintage setup. It had a clean firewall cover plate and must have put everything inside the cab leaving the firewall flat..just what i need!
Grande Rojo 12-06-2008, 11:59 AM Crap, I just wet myself!!!!!!!!!
That is nice:metal:
Conundrum 12-06-2008, 12:45 PM That is one sweet truck!
Basically what I am shooting for with my 74.
joe231 12-06-2008, 02:10 PM sorry it took me a bit to post....
had to clean all the drool out of my keyboard ;)
abebummy26 12-06-2008, 02:40 PM Yeah stepside 454's vintage air set up is sweet I've seen that truck in person and its just as nice.
Slick71 12-06-2008, 03:17 PM Man..seeing those pics makes me REALLY want a lowered 2 wheeler!
1984 swb chevy 12-06-2008, 03:53 PM That looks great If you dont mind how about a ballpark figure on the cost of the front and read dropmmber setups with bags.
crawdadfox 12-06-2008, 04:54 PM I have right at $4,000 in the front and rear, minus the air comp. set up. With Porterbuilt running the Xmas special on the front you should get by a little cheaper.
75silverstep 12-06-2008, 05:07 PM I love these trucks ..New ones just dont have the personality that ares do..I really like how this kit gets you on the ground..Your truck i sweeeeeeet..
LMDGUY 12-06-2008, 06:34 PM SWEET truck!! love the stock look all layed out

The guy that bought my tan truck had flown out to buy that one and he stated the same about the ebay add and the actual condition . He had actually put a $500 deposit on it and refused the truck when he arrived . The seller wouldnt answer the calls or emails after and he lost his deposit . I am sure that others noticed the same and that is probably why he eventually came down on the price . What plans do you have in mind for the exterior and interior ? The thing looks awesome with the wheels in place . Did you have it shipped or did you go get it yourself ?
Frank
69chevyshort 12-06-2008, 11:21 PM Truck looks great so far, keep up the good work. Seeing yours makes me wish I had kept my square body SWB.
crawdadfox 12-07-2008, 06:28 AM Frank my plan right now.. is to go with one piece windows, get the bed finished, Vintage a/c and fab some inner wheel wells for the front. As far as exterior it still has its original paint, i have a custom painter that has done graphics on a few bikes for me, that is working on some "shop logo's" for the doors....we will see. I will be putting a white sport bumper out back to match the front ( i was going with chrome f & r) but the white grew on me!! Oh yeah about the front bumper, i pulled it in 1 1/2" to the body...can't believe all the sharp eyes didnt catch that one!! As far as inside, fresh carpet and call it a day. Kind of crazy but i am thinking about moving the cab mounts down about 5/8" - 3/4" to lower it a bit more, even though its laying frame!! I had the same problem back in the 80's with 4x4's and ended up with 17" of lift on my truck! Man looking at what i just listed.... i still got alot to do!!
lolife99 12-07-2008, 07:04 AM Hey Crawdad,... Your buddy Jeff has a white rear sport bumper,... and I have a set of brackets. Let me know if you need them.
crawdadfox 12-07-2008, 07:21 AM Oh yeah, check w/ Jeff and make sure its nice and if it has the license plate bucket. I never thought i would keep the bumpers white, but they just look right on this bomb!
porterbuilt 12-07-2008, 09:01 PM I can't stop looking at this thing!:metal:
72BlckButy 12-07-2008, 09:04 PM I can't stop looking at this thing!:metal:
That's always good to hear from the suspension guru... :D
Fat Hoe 12-07-2008, 09:13 PM this truck is awesome...did you have to anything to the body for fitment of the wheels besides take out the front inners, remove the air box and raise and cut the bed? I just want to make sure I'm not missing anything...
Chuck

Thanks Chuck, you got all the mods. that need to be done! The front is simple, no mods required other than 86ing the a/c. box, though i will trim the inner fender structure some so i can ride it low. We had the front done (2 guys) in 5 hrs., that was pulling the cap, taking the old 6 banger out, putting the Porterbuilt Dropmember and susp. back in and putting the new small block and front cap back on, (and i had to answer the phone because we were "working"!) The bed is what takes the time, which i still have to finish. I will post some more pics. as progress is made.:chevy:
boatpuller 12-08-2008, 11:19 AM crawdad,i read where you were going to do a vintage system and were wondering about the firewall.i posted a pic of my plate.the install's not to bad.i had my cab gutted when i did mine.i think it make's it alot easier and i dynamatted at the same time.
crawdadfox 12-08-2008, 01:31 PM Hey boatpuller, thats what i like about this website..super helpfull people!! Thats the pic. i needed, looks like it will work great for me! Now that you done me a favor i need one more, can you give me a measurement from the passenger inner fender structure to the hose location on the firewall? Again thanks for posting the pic. ;)

no problem, glad to help a fellow two toner.i went down and took a couple crappy pic's.i was running out of light and they didn't turn out very good.it's kinda hard to measure a rounded fender.no more than a couple inches depending on how you look at it.it's just right above the fender structures flat lip that goes over the frame.i assume your thinking about your front tires when your layed out?or hiding the hose's out of the firewall.i'll get some better pics tommorrow if these don't work for you.let me know.
SCOTI 12-08-2008, 07:00 PM I'm thinkin my 74 has a rear Dropmember in it's future . . .... That looks sweet.

baggedcten 12-09-2008, 10:47 PM crawdadfox man its looking good !!!!!
lolife99 12-10-2008, 09:54 PM Crawdad,... Here's a pic of Jeff's bumper. Factory paint and appears pretty straight. I believe the license bracket is still available from GM. Or check Goodmark or Tri-plus.
I have the brackets also.
Give Jeff a shout if you want it.
I'm not sure what shipping would be.
lolife99 12-10-2008, 09:57 PM Hopefully these will be bigger.
crawdadfox 12-11-2008, 08:00 PM Thanks lolife99 i sent you a pm. ;)
lolife99 12-12-2008, 08:09 AM The bumper brackets should be at your shop on Tuesday.
ostncoln 12-13-2008, 05:08 PM i love it :metal:
i wanted to buy that truck off ebay and do the same thing. great work!!!
brad2 12-14-2008, 12:09 AM Love the truck! It makes me want to show my 74 some love.
rustSpot 12-14-2008, 09:56 PM Absolutely dig this truck!
Swifty 12-15-2008, 01:38 AM that is one BEAUTIFUL truck!!!!! great job!!!!
idrgbdy 12-15-2008, 11:34 AM i love it!!! i actually just bought a silver '77 off ebay over the weekend. i'm definitely going to bag it this year and might leave it alone for a bit. my main project right now is a '96 sonoma that's bodydropped, 20/22 billets, and a 355.
again, this is by far one of my favorite trucks, everything you have done is just my style!! i always wanted a 67-72 style, then switched to wanting a 60-66 real bad, then found a '77 for a good price and couldn't pass it up.
if you don't mind, how much did you end up paying for your truck off good old ebay?

Thanks, i kind of like the stock and dropped look so thats the direction i'll be taking with this truck. I got the truck three grand less than where the last bidding was at. He had a couple people back out on the deal (thats ebay for you!) and he was ready to move it.
