Hello all, my old truck has the original paint and like most it is mostly worn off and has that aged look, surface rust and all. A paintjob is not in the near future so how can I preserve the look I have for now and control the surface rust from taking over too much? Would waxing help or buffing or ??? Thanks in advance. 448077

Hey Mike, welcome to the site and nice truck!

I would suggest a good washing and wax for now. Buffing may take too much paint off and ruin what you already have.

A good wax may help bring some of the color and shine back but don't expect miracles. It will help, but not 100%

P.S. There is another Mike here. His name is Mike85. Nice guy.... I am sure you will get to know him soon. :)

No relation but one damn fine original truck.:metal:
How,"exactly" do you wax rust?

Main thing you can do is try to keep it dry till you do get ready to restore it.
You can wax the old paint but it will look weird with glossy paint and rusty areas. After you wash it,dry it down with a leaf blower especally the unpainted areas, this will help keep the rust from growing faster.
Maybe some of the detailer quick cleaner for the rust areas?
Definetly don't want any Armor All or silicone base cleaners. Those will cause you a world of trouble later when you do get around to restoring it.

If you really want to hack some people off, take this "patina" job to some car shows and enter it into the rat rod class. Those guys will be driving you nuts asking "how" you pulled this off.:lol::lol:

Hello Guys, thanks for the advice, I did wax this thing awhile back and it looked good for a few weeks then like magic most of the shine dissapeared or the wind blew it off or something. Since the spring rains are coming and my truck sits outside I thought some of you paint guys might know a "secret" to help me. I will try waxing again maybe with some cleaner polish and maybe tarping the top during the rain. The first cruise of the year is next weekend and I'm hoping to be there. Oh and Mike85 I wasn't trying to 'jack' your name ;). This is a great site with a lot of great info!
