DO I need to change the tip of my welder when using smaller wire? I have a 0.030 tip and using .023 wire. Will using the wrong tip cause problems? I am still learning the tricks to welding as I just set my mig up for gas

Yes, running the right size tip will help the machine to run better. It will help to control the wire as your welding.

im going to guess when u weld with the .030 tip that weld splatter would get in the tip and clog easier

Your right, But there are some tips that will work for 2 sizes like .030 and .035 .040 and .045. Really depends on who makes the replacement tips. also make sure your using the right rollers for the wire.

I flipped the roller from nurled to smooth, so I think it is right as for the clogging of the tip, yes it does bind up a bit. I had to order tips because my machine is so old. got 5 coming this week. what causes a tip to ware out? I have never used one up. just wondering. thanks for the pointers

weld spatter. If it is still hanging up the liner in the gun might be bad. and if its that old the liner will be hard to find or expensive.

Also make sure that your wire is clean and not rusted. This will wreck the liner.

Brand new wire, I am thinking of getting a scrubber to help clean off the rust when I use my older wire

Those really don't work all that well. It will be a lot less aggravating to use good wire. If you have wire that you are not using it is best to seal it in a plastic bag to prevent the rust.
