View Full Version : better than working!
dammitmitchell 05-01-2009, 09:16 PM so ive been searching for two months..
i gave up on my criteria for what an avionics technician is "worth"..
tried to go back to schooll (no money to preload the school before GI bill would kick in.. need food to go to school right?.. need food more..)
so i lowered my criteria..
even looked at "starter jobs".. NOTHING..
i cant even get people to bring their cars over for a little side work..
most peeps r .. kinda snobby and need a "real mechanic" not a dude with a big arse truck that runs like a champ.... jerks..
so i even applied to be a .. well receptionist.. (dont laugh jerks)
NOTHING..
i got three phone calls this month..
all three required me to travel...
and ive spent the past seven years traveling the world and meeting people who dont like me.. and want to harm us....
so now it's time to stay home..
the only option left is be a full time daddy..
a totally new challenge and im soo not ready for it but im excited.. so im running through this pit of coals barefoot!...
that's my style.. and i will love everysecond of it..
and i hope to take a few small night classes i can "financially afford" so my gi bill starts.. and next fall start full time schooling for my A&P courses..
so i can have more diversity on jobs and cities to work in..
thanks for reading..
p.s. project FTDminorworks will start soon... witha clucth.. then cam...
then engine prettiness...interior painting.. smoking 37's.. and paring on imports..
just will be a very slow slow build!
AdrianR 05-01-2009, 10:13 PM Seems a little strange, though, that there's nothing happening in aerospace or defense...I always thought Texas was full of that kind of thing. How about ground engineer tickets for civilian aviation?
Being househusband can be fun for a while (I did it)...but a man has to be doing something that occupies the mind in stimulating ways and provides challenges.
dammitmitchell 05-02-2009, 12:58 AM ive got a few projects here..
im a closet artist (not in a gay way just dont tell people i do it)
and have a major project to do...
but i also have my truck which needs love time and consideration..
and "some side work".. the gym... etc..
i understand.. ive seen enough housewives get FAT as all get up.. and just become evil because they are bored out of their minds...
ive been a father for almost seven years.. and have never spent more then Three days alone with my children..
i at times dont know them.. this will be my crash course..
and i need it..
not to be having a therapy moment or anything !
heheheeh
AdrianR 05-02-2009, 07:19 AM Yeah, boredom's the killer...makes women eat & get fat, but also can make some men hit the bottle - when that happens, then it's all over.
Stay busy and stay happy, and enjoy your kids and some stress-free livin' away from the rat-race for a while!
sleepertruck72 05-08-2009, 10:39 AM dammitmitchell,
That sucks to not find work in your line of work. Hang in there. Have you tried financial aid ? fafsa.ed.gov That may pay for your classes, and then you can request your GI bill benefits. I am tile guy and have been out of work for at least a year. Luckily I have been doing side work to get by. I am going to school and like a dummy my GI bill expires this sep. 10 yrs have passed almost and now I wish I had gone to school right after I got out of the ARMY.
As for being a full time Dad, I too have been doing that. My kids love it mostly and hate me when I make them clean. Thats parenting though. Tough love and alot of fun. Enjoy it !
dammitmitchell 05-08-2009, 02:09 PM yeap.. texas has incredible clauses for veterans, i put in for my FAFSA the otherday and got a same day response (pretty cool)
and monday i'll be there with the VA rep seeing how much extra denero i can pull in from school..
i look forward to it..
Sillyoldman 05-08-2009, 03:43 PM Hey DIM now that you have come out, what kind of art do you do? I'm not sure if I'm an artist or not. I don't think so, but I'm a little creative.
dammitmitchell 05-08-2009, 03:54 PM ill b ehonest and say i need more experience... ive faded wuite away form what i used to do.. used to be a huge "sketcher" and i did a ton of greyscale to color (where jsut highlights were painted or the frame was a color and interior was greyscale.. or whatever)
but im likeing just plain old freehand painting lately..
when i have the time and or desire to do it..
plan on taking some mroe art classes this summer also...
dammitmitchell 05-08-2009, 03:56 PM these were done in Iraq on 2007... ones a tail rotor for an apache... to be a gift for a former commander..
and the other was a wall painting the missile is about as long as my fingertips to elbow..

msgross 05-08-2009, 04:53 PM if you don't want to travel then finding jobs in aviation will be a little tougher. I can point you to dozens of contractors hiring guys like you but, you will need to travel.
If you have to take a fed loan until the gi-bill kicks in then so be it, you don't have to make payments (or accrue interest) while you are in school. I went back to college and received an ROTC scholarship then the GIbill paid me nearly $1000 a month (tax free).
A&P is a long school and pay is so/so as you might know. But there are a lot of options for you.
Are there any Texas national guard aviation units near you? You should be able to join the guard and get a full time Technician job working on the floor. They might even have classes for the A&P license since most states are getting the LUH soon.
PM me if you need me to track down some info for you...
dammitmitchell 05-08-2009, 04:57 PM DS@ is hiring "now" i had to pass o the offer it was a relocation to FT hood we r not in the postion to move..
i want/need my airframe licence so that i can be maneuverable and not subject to government contracts..
the wars are going to end in the near future and alot of us will be out of work..
msgross 05-08-2009, 06:07 PM we just hired about 30-40 A&P's while our CAB is deployed... Those guys will move on when they return and hit the next CAB and so on...
I don't know that you are going to find a "stable" airline/aviation job since most of the big business' are downsized or closed. I use to live near Indy and a lot of my mechanics worked for Delta... that hub closed and a lot of them joined the guard full-time.
It's rough out there and that's one of those occupations that grows and shrinks with the life of a business. Good luck and i'll keep an eye out in your location.
dammitmitchell 05-08-2009, 06:42 PM thank you
79gmcc15 05-11-2009, 03:55 AM fwiw you can try homedepot they are hiring for there summer jobs. lol I went on a job interview with them last month sometime. weekends mostly, part time. also, Costco is always hiring because they hire within. but apparently everyone starts out part time. I also had a phone interview with them. but I need a ft job.
