View Full Version : 79 2wd Blazer (what have I done?)
n2billet 05-07-2009, 04:57 PM The story behind the blazer is that my son wanted an older truck to drive around and have fun on the weekends. I started a 68swb and then went way too deep to finish it before he graduated from school so I bought another 68 swb that I thought would be a simple scuff and shoot and add wheels and tires. It turns out that the truck is not what I thought it was.....so I went looking again. As luck would have it a friend of mine (bagged74) was selling his 79 blazer and made me a great deal so I bought it. I already had the wheels and tires so I bought it without the 22's. We are now in the process of cleaning up a few areas and I'm trying not to take it completely apart.......with any luck this will get the gas flowing in my boys veins...;)
The first picture is when I bought it and the next two are after we installed the wheels and tires.
n2billet 05-07-2009, 05:00 PM Now one day he tells me he would like to have new carpet and I'm thinking...cool...this is something we can do in a weekend and it will get him starting in the right direction.....well I came home from the shop and he had done this..........new plan: we re-do all the interior...
killer71 05-07-2009, 05:04 PM they get outta hand rather quickly dont they:D
Nice blazer btw!:metal:
n2billet 05-07-2009, 05:05 PM Now I needed to replace the dash and I really wanted a NOS one but I knew they were getting hard to come by, lucky for us Trey has an uncle that has some parts stashed and he gave him a new in the box dash......the uncle is also know as N2trux on some forums....;) The other pictures are of the install....not very good pictures.....it hard to get good shots of an interior when you only know how to press the button on top of the camera.
n2billet 05-07-2009, 05:08 PM Now the rear panels didn't turn out like I had planned in my head but then again it's not bad for a driveway job and the boy likes them.
n2billet 05-07-2009, 05:13 PM We will be getting new door panels next and that should finish the interior. Next on the list is to get a new transmission.... he got to drive it two days to school this week and then the trans fell out.....such is life. The one rule he's making me stick to is that I will not paint it......I agreed, he just wants to be able to cruise in it this summer before he goes off to College........so after I get my new shop finished I might accidentally throw some color on it while he's at school ;) besides someone needs to drive it to keep it up while he's away and I like shiny paint.......sometimes!
ksbrktracer 05-07-2009, 05:16 PM lOOKS really sharp and I love the color combo.......It is orange ...right....I can feel for ya on the getting out of hand......seems like everything I do gets that way......!!!!!!!

Thanks..It's actually red....I don't have any photography skills... I ended up painting and dyeing everything because the carpet I ordered came in red and should have been reddish maroon.....second step to getting out of hand!!!
70k52wd 05-07-2009, 05:26 PM I love the glowing red interior. Really nice. Lucky kid you got.
ksbrktracer 05-07-2009, 05:30 PM The pics look orange too me, but thats alright ....I have an orange and white 76 crew cab...trying to decide what to do with it......so many projects and so little time , It has saddle (tan) interior and it is my favorite combo. Never ends does it , Always somethin else to do, Looks like you have some really cool projects ....wagons and so on ....Im a big wagon fan too, I have a 65 chevelle 2dr wagon that has a full tube chassi....someday it will be cool
OrangeAnimal 05-07-2009, 06:33 PM That's clean! I would love to have a matching blazer parked next to my truck mmmm the possibilities.
bagged74 05-07-2009, 08:14 PM thats looks sweet..kinda what i was planning had i kept it. what kind of material is on the seats..looks nice is it ultra leather?

ksbrktracer 05-07-2009, 10:29 PM I agree .....no paint......factory paint is the coolest, and once you paint it you cant go back.......I vote for the original paint

tvblazer78 05-08-2009, 09:16 AM Looks like that thing will be super clean! we need some more super clean K5's on here, maybe this will get me going on a new project.
N2TRUX 05-08-2009, 09:29 AM WOW! The rear came out nice too. I had the privilege of a sneak peak on the front, but this is my first view of the rear.
Dang it makes me miss having a Blazer.

That console looks really familiar...
SBTork 05-09-2009, 06:38 AM Awesome build, I looked through your '68 build and that was damn impressive so I cannot wait to see what you have in store for this one. :metal:
n2billet 05-09-2009, 04:21 PM That console looks really familiar...
It's the one that came in it.....I just stripped it down and painted it and the lower dash to match the rest of the stuff....
Frizzle Fry 05-09-2009, 10:03 PM That is looking schweeet!
Was the bucket/console option more common on the Blazers?
flamingbig10 05-10-2009, 09:12 AM Was the bucket/console option more common on the Blazers?
I think that was the only seat option for blazer's, several suburbans came with the option and very few trucks came with the option
N2TRUX 05-10-2009, 09:19 AM I think that was the only seat option for blazer's, several suburbans came with the option and very few trucks came with the optionNot to jack the thread but let me clarify. Bucket seats and consoles were standard on Blazers, but they were available with a bench. It's rare that you see one, and they are usually Forest Service, etc vehicles but they are out there.
Burbs are more commonly seen with buckets, but not uncommon to see a bench in them.
AceX- While I did contribute the dash pad to the young mans project, I still have the console stashed away.
blazn79 05-14-2009, 12:32 PM N2BILLET, What did you do w/ the red lowback velour early 90's front seats that were in it?
Blazn79:chevy:FOR LIFE!

98L150 05-20-2009, 12:38 PM cool blazer keith
n2billet 05-25-2009, 10:47 AM It seems that this poor Blazer spends most of it's time on a trailer but that's about to change and after the new trans I'm sure my son (and me) will drive it ever chance we get... Anyway, I loaded it up and took it to Houston this weekend to have the trans replaced, as luck would have it Uncle Ken came to the rescue again on this project. He worked a very nice deal with his brother-in-law on getting the work done (he's a trans mechanic) so a road trip was in order. Sorry for the crappy pictures but I only had my cell phone and I was trying to keep Ken's castle out of the pictures.
tvblazer78 05-25-2009, 12:16 PM Sweet! That were mine has been most of the summer, but it's to take it to show and that's long trips too..
69face 05-27-2009, 01:02 PM Now the rear panels didn't turn out like I had planned in my head but then again it's not bad for a driveway job and the boy likes them.
how did you make those rear panel? what material for the foundation and tools to cut and get the polished metal insert in place.
Okay, stop it. I was thinking of doing a Nova as my next project but I think its going to be a Blazer (because of Travis and you). Stop it!! Looking good thanks for keeping us posted.:metal::metal:
FRENCHBLUE72 05-30-2009, 07:26 AM Very cool glad to see the kid got a nice ride.....

rustSpot 09-17-2009, 02:31 AM Man, I love this blazer! Insanely cool in person. Good job on it Keith.
1972SuperCheyenne 09-17-2009, 08:12 PM Well, it's officially time to find a Blazer to rest in the garage next to my shortbed. Thanks for the inspiration.
OARNGESI 11-04-2009, 05:55 AM anything new with this
BRUISER 11-04-2009, 10:22 AM Now the rear panels didn't turn out like I had planned in my head but then again it's not bad for a driveway job and the boy likes them.
I didn't know this truck had changed hands, it's looking great. I really like the rear panels. Did you use the originals for templates?
n2billet 11-04-2009, 11:35 AM anything new with this
Well, I finally got the transmission problems worked out so we can drive it again. My son is off at college so I'm trying to keep the battery up while he's away ;)
I didn't know this truck had changed hands, it's looking great. I really like the rear panels. Did you use the originals for templates?
Nope, I made new templates but they are just like the originals.
aggie91 11-04-2009, 11:47 AM Keith
You mentioned that you painted the interior parts red to match the carpet. What materials did you use? What is you basic outline of preping the plastic to paint?
By the way, that Blazer is killer.
Driveway Dreams 11-04-2009, 01:18 PM Just read this build for the first time. Great Blazer. Everytime I see these things I think I should have bought a round eye Blazer or Jimmy instead of the truck. Dang you all!

I prepped the plastic by using scotch brite pads and plastic dupoint plastic prep. followed by a quick swipe of lacquer thinner. For the plastic I used vinyl dye and for the lower metal dash I used paint with flatten agent.

I hear you..........now I'm looking for a 70-72 blazer....
BRUISER 11-04-2009, 08:29 PM If I remember right, it had the huge mirrors on it at first. Do you know where those you have now came from?
TylerHuff 11-04-2009, 08:35 PM Blazer looks awesome ive been checking out blazer builds to get some ideas and ill be checking back on this one
n2billet 11-05-2009, 04:52 AM If I remember right, it had the huge mirrors on it at first. Do you know where those you have now came from?
There stock mid 80's truck mirrors, I have bought several over the years but these are my nos pair.

Thanks. I have a small pair on mine but they're generic and the passenger side won't adjust to any usable view. I'll see what classic parts wants for them.
EDIT: Wow. They're proud of those aren't they?
Damien 11-05-2009, 09:45 AM I would also like to know a little more about how you built the side panels. I have one that is trash from water damage. I was thinking 1/4" plywood for the backing.
N2TRUX 11-05-2009, 09:47 AM I hear you..........now I'm looking for a 70-72 blazer....Here we go again...:)
.... Wow. They're proud of those aren't they?If you think they are expensive now, you should have priced them a few years ago. At that time no one was making repops, and NOS was all that was available.
The sad part is I talked to GM parts guy that said they threw away BOXES filled with these mirrors. The trend during 73-80 was swap the sport mirrors for the swing away dumbos.
blazer2007 11-05-2009, 09:57 AM please more info on the rear panels

At the time, after all those years of big mirrors with the ugly tripod mount, those swing away dumbos were really nice. If I were doing a 4x4, I'd use the dumbos. Classic Parts is $30 or so cheaper than LMC, so I'll get them there.
As always, thanks for the help.

I made these panels out of high dense sign board, I usually make my panels out of aluminum but I was on a budget. I used 1/8 form to cover the board and plastic board to make the raised design. I cut and removed the foam where the aluminum strip is so it would sit flush with the material. I used vinyl to cover the panel.....I will try and see if I have any pictures that will explain it better.

You sure did a good job for something you're not 100% satisfied with. I didn't notice any screws, how are they attached?
Driveway Dreams 11-05-2009, 10:45 AM I agree. They look great. This same method could probably easily be adapted to door panels too I assume.

Yep.
Damien 11-05-2009, 01:30 PM What is sign board? plastic?
